IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says the military has so far notified the families of 203 hostages that their loved ones are being held in the Gaza Strip.

He says the number is not final
I imagine that one of the difficulties is that while HAMAS is the god father of armed Palestinian groups in Gaza, they are not the only armed group.

In concert and the immediate area, footage of the rampage attacks in Israel shows a mix of uniformed fighters replete with extra gear, fighters in civilian clothes with extra gear, fighters with a gun and whose gear consisted of a T shirt and flip flops- an older man in a sweater toting a gun, and a series of unarmed looters.

The totality of the footage suggests that smaller armed groups and "lone wolf" individuals joined in the attack as well once HAMAS over ran Israeli military outposts.

This could well have led to hostages being taken mainly by HAMAS, but also by other groups and "me and my cousin" lone wolf types.

Ruth Peretz used to love going to music festivals.

Since she had cerebral palsy, her father Erick would always take her to enjoy the music together.

This was reason enough for Hamas to slaughter them.

Police say 10 officers were wounded, including one in serious condition, as a result of a bomb blast in the Nur Shams refugee camp, close to the West Bank city of Tulkarem, earlier today.

In a statement, police say the Border Police officers were operating in the camp to detain wanted Palestinians when they came under fire and IEDs were hurled at them. In one incident earlier this morning, an IED exploded near the forces, seriously wounding one officer. Another nine officers are lightly hurt, police say.

The Israel Defense Forces published a video showing a drone strike against a group of Palestinian gunmen in Nur Shams earlier today. In a joint statement, the IDF and police say forces operated in the camp since late last night, arresting at least 10 wanted Palestinians.

Thanks for the link regarding a report of BBC journalists liking and sharing tweets which break the BBC's editorial policy for social media use.

I wonder what Sky and LBC will do about their reporters doing the same or if the same organisation is monitoring them and reporting on them too?

examples:
sky's international affairs editor

I can add the ITV examples and others but the post will become very long

It's almost as if it's only a problem if the BBC does it. Very selective, very strange - almost as if there's an agenda
The actual tweet won’t carry over. In reply to the tweet about carrying ID card. That is the law in Israel Every single resident over 16 MUST carry ID card. Jews, Muslims, Christians. Everyone.

Teudat Zehut (Hebrew: תעודת זהות t'udát zehút; Arabic: بطاقة هوية biṭāqat huwiyyah) is the Israeli compulsory identity document issued by the Ministry of Interior, as prescribed in the Identity Card Carrying and Displaying Act of 1982: "Any resident sixteen years of age or older must at all times carry an Identity card, and present it upon demand to a senior police officer, head of Municipal or Regional Authority, or a policeman or member of the Armed forces on duty."[2] According to a precedent from 2011, residents are entitled to refuse presenting the card, unless the state-official has a reason to suspect that they have committed an offence.[3]

An Israeli TV station has released new footage which appears to show rockets fired over a hospital in Gaza just moments before an explosion killed hundreds last night. It comes after Israel's military shared footage and analysis which they say shows they were not responsible for the horrifying blast at the Al-Ahli Hospital. The video clip livestreamed on Israeli television shows a salvo of rockets being launched before explosions rock an area claimed to be the medical centre.

So what do we actually know about the hospital blast – and the contradicting claims by Israel and Hamas, which is designated a terrorist organisation by the UK?

Oct 19, 2023 GAZA STRIP
Israel's possible ground assault in Gaza faces a challenge with an extensive underground tunnel system, according to experts. Experts say the underground tunnel system is designed to conceal and cover Hamas militants and execute surprise attacks. Hamas in 2021 claimed it had built 500 kilometres of tunnels under Gaza covering most of the 365 square kilometre coastal enclave. The tunnel system is so extensive and well-known it's referred to by some, including the Israel Defence Forces, as the "metro".

Question: what do Hamas sponsors get back? Except for certain clout, of course, and creating political instability, but that won’t be enough…usually nothing is “just charity” in politics, more quid pro quo. So what does Quatar get in return? Unless the “private sponsors” are somewhat grandiose future Osamas, of course… but if not, there should be some payback. Or, the decision to support is made by the Quatar government, but then, most is stuck to the hands of own bureaucracy+Hamas?
Politics can be like religion. People will donate because they "believe in it". Qatar likely feels Hamas (a weakened Israel state) will benefit Qatar.

Political donation laws vary from country to country. For instance, the govt of Qatar may not be donating, but there may be a few influential private individuals who are donating. So they could be a proxy for govt donations.

Yes, there are kick backs and quid pro quo. But in the ME, there is such as struggle for power between states, negotiations don't seem to work etc.

Yes about the ID law. He wasn't complaining about the ID law.

He was complaining about the govt officials checking cell phones.

The tweet is from a non-verified account. So, the actual context is somewhat limited. Is this happening all the time? Is it happening sporadically? Is it happening to all Palestinians? Do they have warrants? Do war time rules suspend some search warrant laws? etc etc
ETA: Is it like TSA checks? In many cases, those are civil liberties issues. (Like Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan constantly being detained and questioned at US airports because of his name. He did make his engagements but was late)

It could potentially become a human right's issue if it is abused.

Until now. In recent days, the Police now no longer ask to see ID's. Instead, they've been asked to give the police their cellphones. Under law, this requires a search warrant, but the police interpret the law as a warm recommendation.

The Police then will begin to look at the content on the phone: WhatsApp messages, Telegram, photos, posts etc. If they find anything "objectionable" - like an expression of concern re events in Gaza, the individual is arrested for two or three days, then released.

We have no reports of people detained under these circumstances who were brought up on charges. This morning, Kann Broadcast News reported that the Cabinet was told that the Palestinians in East Jerusalem are being "deterred".

This is not only illegal and a gross human rights violation, it's also really stupid. Not for the first time, Israel segues from viewing the Palestinians as a suspect, tolerated minority into treating them as the enemy. Which is what they are doing.

There's so much homework (history, geography, religion, economics, psychology... the list goes on!) it's difficult for all of us. imo But, I think we are all learning a great deal... so that's good !
A bit late to post but this thread moves so fast it’s hard to finish reading previous posts. I had initially wanted to post regarding the Roman diaspora of Jewish population of AD 70. However my reference books are older and I got caught down a rabbit hole between Israeli historian Shlomo Sand, opposing views, and at 0300 I was so sure my ears would begin bleeding so I stopped with too many books and notes.

I’ll add another field to look at: genomic studies and population genetics, just as contentious as history. If I didn’t go cross-eyed and cannot link (Luddite here) I’d start with population genetics, move to geography, history (minefield,) then to religion: Judaism, Christianity and Islam in that generally acknowledged sequence of introduction/development. Economics? Wow I can’t figure out where to start. Afro-Semitic groups, Afro-Asiatic languages? Does geography influence cultural and religious areas? Brain is reeling.

There were, of course, other smaller tribal religions but I cannot find all of my resources. Again, no link, just years of education and research in the ancient Near East and Middle East, historical as well as archaeological. Geo-politics is not my forte. JMEO for what it’s worth.

World Health Organization says medical aid 'ready to go' at Gaza crossing

Five trucks of medical supplies are ready at the border between Gaza and Egypt, the World Health Organization said on Thursday, welcoming Israel's announcement that it will not block the entry of aid into the Palestinian territory.

"Our trucks are loaded and ready to go," WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference on Wednesday. He said he hoped the supplies would be delivered as soon as the crossing opened, "hopefully tomorrow."

Why has Egypt been reluctant to open the border to civilians?

Egypt and Jordan flank Israel on opposite sides and share borders with Gazaand the occupied West Bank, respectively. Both have have been reticent to allow displaced Palestinians in.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi made his toughest remarks yet on Wednesday, saying the current war was not just aimed at fighting Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, “but also an attempt to push the civilian inhabitants to … migrate to Egypt.” He warned this could wreck peace in the region.

Palestinians could instead be moved to Israel’s Negev desert “till the militants are dealt with”, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told a joint press conference in Cairo with German chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“What is happening now in Gaza is an attempt to force civilian residents to take refugee and migrate to Egypt, which should not be accepted,” said Sisi.

“Egypt rejects any attempt to resolve the Palestinian issue by military means or through the forced displacement of Palestinians from their land, which would come at the expense of the countries of the region,” he said.

Sisi said the Egyptian people would “go out and protest in their millions … if called upon to do so” against any displacement of Gaza’s residents to Sinai.

Referring to the Egyptian position at a Beirut press conference, Hamas official Osama Hamdan called “for rallying around this position and supporting it on the popular and Arab official level because this represents real protection for our Palestinian people.”

Very good stuff here. I hope it is not lost on world media.

Good!
They found a real bias and hopefully it will be gone.
We need accuracy!
I like to get my news from lots of sources and BBC is usually among those sources. I know they have been a bit biased against Israel in the past but still I would read they material. But with this incident, the BBC coverage has not just been biased but incredibly inaccurate. I would be outraged if I was British to see what happened to their news service.

With dual citizenship, couldn't Egypt then expel them to the other country of citizenship ?
There is something else going on here that may have been answered in my response to another post : Some countries seem to fear these people; maybe due to the actions of some of them, but not all ?
Omo.
They are supposed to get to their country of citizenship immediately. They can't stay in Egypt.
Countries will arrange to get them home. I believe there are only 500 US citizens. Things will be worked out with the US Embassy in Egypt.

They don't have VISAs to visit Egypt.
