What leaders said at the Egypt summit

As we've been reporting, representatives from countries around the world met at a summit in Egypt today and have been unified in calling for an end to the war between Israel and Gaza.

Here's a snippet of what some of the speakers said:

  • UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed for a humanitarian ceasefire
  • Jordan's King Abdullah warned non-Arab countries to avoid sending the "very dangerous" message that "Palestinians lives matter less than Israeli ones"
  • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said South Africans could relate to the plight of Palestinians in the "struggle to achieve their freedom"
  • UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said he had spoken to the Israeli government directly "about their duty to respect international law and the importance of preserving civilian lives in Gaza"
  • Japan's Foreign Minister Yōko Kamikawa said the international community must not let the war "shut the windows of opportunity for Middle East peace"
  • Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira called on the world to avoid any possibility of regional spillover of the conflict
  • Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said the flames of hatred must not be fanned, "because that is exactly what Hamas and their sponsors want"

Final joint statement won't be issued following Cairo peace summit due to "differences," officials say

A final joint statement won't be issued following Saturday's Cairo peace summit due to "differences" between the delegations on the wording, an official and a diplomat with knowledge of the matter confirmed to CNN on Saturday.

One of them also said this was expected even before the start of the summit.

A catch-up of today's developments

Day has turned to night in Israel, where two weeks ago Hamas launched its surprise attack, prompting Israel to launch retaliatory air strikes. Here's where things stand right now:

Pro-Palestinian protests have been held in several countries around the world, including London in the UK, Rome in Italy and Mombasa in Kenya. The BBC's Dominic Casciani witnessed the march in London - here's his take.

Twenty trucks carrying humanitarian aid were allowed through the Rafah border crossing from Egypt into Gaza earlier - the first since the conflict began. The UN says the delivery of aid is a "drop in the ocean" of the amount that's needed.

Israel estimates that the number of hostages currently being held by Hamas in Gaza is 210. Yesterday, mother and daughter Judith and Natalie Raanan became the first people to be released. There's more on those being held here.

Egypt hosted a summit of global powers to discuss the Israel-Gaza war, though Israel, Iran and the US were not present.

The Hamas-run heath ministry says 4,385 people have died in Gaza in the last two weeks. Israel's military says at least 307 soldiers have been killed in that same timeframe, and the Hamas attacks in Israel have killed about 1,400 in total.

re Gershon Birkin

This is unpaywalled, I posted it a few days ago. He may have done more recent interviews
Thank you!
I agree with his assessment of Hamas. They know their days are numbered. However, I do feel their leaders who are being harbored in other countries will be spared at least for now. When Hamas in Gaza is pretty much obliterated, I wonder what those countries will do with the leaders they are now harboring? I would not be surprised if they eventually dump them.

IDF still focused on Gaza despite heat from Lebanon, spokesman says

IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says the military is still focused on the Gaza Strip, despite repeated attacks from Lebanon by the Hezbollah terror group.

“Every day we conduct an assessment of the north. We are strong on defense and offense [on the Lebanon border], but the main task we are focused on is Gaza,” Hagari says in a press conference.

“Our main mission is Gaza, where Hamas is, and where our kidnapped citizens are,” he adds.

Hezbollah and allied Palestinian terror groups have carried out daily missile and rocket attacks from Lebanon at IDF positions and Israeli towns in the last two weeks.

The IDF has been responding with strikes on Hezbollah sites and operatives.

Ultra-Orthodox asking to join up by thousands, army says

IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari says there have been increasing requests by ultra-Orthodox Israelis to join the military amid the war.

The IDF has received more than 2,000 requests from Haredim in recent days, and on Monday, they will begin to be drafted as volunteers, Hagari says.

Many Haredi communities shun military service, causing a serious split in Israeli society.

Hunted for a picture, this is how the border looks today. Barriers have been put up around the guard access station. The pedestrian doors are walled off. I assume the barriers are to protect inspectors and guards and prevent unauthorized pedestrians from trying to get through.

Interesting photo.

Is that a fuel tanker (it is!!) that I note being allowed to cross the border on the right side of the photo from the Gazan side to the Egyptian side.

"I spoke with Natalie. She sounds very, very happy. Very, very good." Released Hamas hostage Natalie Raanan's dad tells me he is hopeful she will be home in time for her birthday on Wednesday. Says he first got pictures from Israel TV about the release.

X post 21 hrs ago

Natalie Raanan’s father will join me live on @newsnation at 8pmET when I sit-in for Cuomo. Natalie and her mom Judith were held hostage by Hamas terrorists before being released today.

Erdogan to Hamas’s Haniyeh: Turkey may take in Gaza wounded

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s office says he has spoken with Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh about the possibility of bringing Gazan wounded to Turkey for treatment.

“President Erdoğan stated that Türkiye is working to ensure that humanitarian aid reach Gaza, the injured be treated in Türkiye when necessary and for a ceasefire to be achieved in the region as soon as possible,” Erdogan’s office says in a tweet.

There is no mention of efforts to free the hostages Hamas abducted from Israel, despite Turkey saying earlier it would intercede on their behalf. Ankara has ramped up criticism of Israel, an ally, in recent days.

Wow; that is something in and of itself. They are even exempt from Israel's mandatory military service (conscript) requirements.

Blinken reaffirms US support for Lebanon as tensions in Middle East remain high

As Israeli and Hezbollah forces have recently traded artillery fire on the Israel-Lebanon border, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated US support for the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces in a phone call Friday.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Saturday that in the call, Blinken acknowledged “growing concern” over escalating tensions in the Middle East and the potential consequences of Lebanon being drawn into the conflict. The secretary also offered condolences to the Lebanese people who have lost loved ones.

Here's what to know about Hezbollah, the powerful, Iran-backed paramilitary force in Lebanon.

BBM: I agree with King Adbullah. I think they are trying.
One day Hamas will be gone.
We will be left with Palestinians. (Wish there was praying hands emoji)
We don't want to isolate them or unnecessarily antagonize them.

What will that be like? I do know in the past, that both sides have had issues with negotiations.
I pray for negotiations on both sides.

So far, they have been rare and short-lived and the cycle starts again.

At Cairo summit, Abbas rejects ‘killing of civilians on both sides’

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is calling for an international peace summit to bring about the end of the Israel-Hamas war.

Speaking at a conference in Cairo, Abbas reiterates his “complete rejection of the killing of civilians on both sides.” He also urges the “release of all civilians, prisoners, and detainees,” likely alluding to some 210 hostages kidnapped from Israel and held by Hamas in Gaza, almost all of them civilians, including children and the elderly, and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Abbas calls for Israel to stop “its barbaric aggression” in Gaza. He also says Palestinians will not exit the coastal territory, even as Israel’s campaign to eliminate Hamas terrorists, including heavy restrictions on food, water and fuel entering the Strip, pushes the enclave’s humanitarian situation to the brink.

“We will not leave, we will not leave, we will not leave, and we will remain in our land,” he tells the summit.

IDF claims over 550 rockets fell short in Strip since outbreak of war

The Israel Defense Forces releases thermal footage showing failed rocket launches from Gaza landing inside the Strip.

According to the IDF, more than 550 rockets fired at Israel have fallen short since October 7, killing Palestinians in the failed strikes.

Earlier today, IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said one-fifth of the rockets launched at Israel yesterday fell short inside Gaza.
I wonder what the number of Palestinians who died from these defective Hamas rockets is?

I'm sure that Israel will be blamed for all of these deaths.
