Hamas now says it will release the two hostages tomorrow. Can't tell if more psychological warfare or if they are just indecisive

For those who can't view the tweet - this is an update to an earlier tweet which read:

Hamas military wing spokesman Abu Obeida claims the terror group informed Qatar yesterday that they would release two hostages held in the Gaza Strip, but that Israel refused to accept them. No immediate comment from Israeli officials.
If Hamas wants to release more pretty teenage girls from the USA, I think it's meaningless. I want to see Israeli babies released.

Iraqi prime minister warns of effect on oil if conflict spreads

Iraq’s prime minister warned Saturday that if the war between Israel and Hamas spreads to other countries in the region it will affect the flow of oil to international markets.

Mohammed Shia al-Sudani was apparently referring to Iran-backed militias that have started launching attacks against U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria and have warned they will step in if Hamas is threatened.

Al-Sudani told an international summit held in Egypt that Baghdad rejects the emptying of the Gaza Strip because “the Palestinians have no other place but their land.”

He called for an immediate cease-fire and an exchange of prisoners to end the current conflict.

Al-Sudani said that the situation would not have reached this point had U.N. Security Council resolutions been respected, an apparent reference to Israel’s settlement policies in the West Bank.

Al-Sudani warned that the current conflict “will impact global security, escalate regional conflict, jeopardize energy supplies, exacerbate economic crises, and invite further conflicts.”

Doctors in Gaza have warned that 130 premature babies are in “imminent danger due to a lack of fuel”.

“The world cannot simply look on as these babies are killed by the siege in Gaza,” Melanie Ward, the chief executive of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), said in a statement.

“We call on world leaders to demand that Israel urgently allows fuel in to Gaza’s hospitals,” she added.

According to MAP, there are only six neonatal units at hospitals in Gaza, including Shifa and Nasser hospitals.

Pakistan leader speaks with Palestinian president

Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar spoke with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas by phone to discuss the “latest situation resulting from the ongoing brutalities of Israeli occupation forces against innocent Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank,” a Pakistani government statement said Saturday.

Kakar expressed Pakistan’s strong condemnation of the Israeli strikes on Gaza, the statement added. Kakar described the Israeli strikes on Gaza “as deplorable and willful acts of Israeli aggression against innocent Palestinians.” Both leaders emphasized the need for the international community “to urge Israel to immediately halt the bloodshed,” it added.

The two sides agreed on the necessity of lifting the blockade on Gaza to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and medical assistance to affected people. Pakistan dispatched its first batch of assistance to Palestinian people on a plane that landed in Egypt on Friday.

Israel pans Cairo confab for failure to condemn Hamas

Israel criticizes a peace summit in Cairo where Arab and Western representatives failed to agree on condemning Hamas for its massacres in southern Israel on October 7.

“It is unfortunate that even when faced with those horrific atrocities, there were some who had difficulty condemning terrorism or acknowledging the danger,” a Foreign Ministry statement says.

“Israel will do what it has to do and expects the international community to recognize its justified battle,” it adds.

Israeli Arabs arrested over Gaza social media posts

By Sara Monetta
BBC News, Jerusalem

Dozens of Arab citizens of Israel have been arrested in connection with social media posts about the war in Gaza.

Among them is a well-known singer and influencer from Nazareth, Dalal Abu Amneh, who was held in police custody for two days before being released on Wednesday on bail. She's now under house arrest until Monday.

According to her lawyer, Abeer Baker, she was accused of "disruptive behaviour" by police officers, who said her posts could incite violence among her followers.
The post that attracted police attention was an image of the Palestinian flag with the Arabic motto: "There is no victor but God."

Ms Baker says the singer, who is well known across the Arab world for her songs about Palestinian heritage, was expressing a religious sentiment. Israeli authorities interpreted the singer's post as a call to arms for Palestinians.

Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, police in Israel have adopted what they call a "zero tolerance policy" towards social media activity deemed to express support for Hamas, an Islamist group which is committed to the destruction of Israel and designated as a terrorist group by Israel, as well as the US, UK, and many other countries.

[…]

Many others have been suspended or sacked from their jobs or face disciplinary action from their universities.

[…]

"Anyone inciting against the State of Israel, its government symbols, elected officials, military personnel and police, should be aware that the Israel Police will respond firmly and without leniency," said Israel's Police Commissioner, Yaakov Shabtai, at a meeting with senior leaders this week.

[…]

Human rights activists worry this spike in detentions is due to the police adopting a wider interpretation of what constitutes incitement to violence.

Why the Rafah border crossing is so important

The crossing that connects Egypt to the southern Gaza Strip opened today for the first time since the Israel-Hamas war erupted to allow 20 trucks to carry aid in. Two other border crossings from the strip go into Israel - both are shut.

Hamas and Egypt exercise control over who can pass through, but Egyptian media said the crossing was shut following three Israeli strikes on 9 and 10 October.

On 12 October,
the Egyptian government asked Israel to halt strikes near the crossing but made it clear it would not reopen the passage without safety guarantees for staff and supplies.

On 20 October, around 175 of trucks with life-saving aid waited on the Egyptian side for entry. On 21 October, the first 20 trucks crossed.

Israel has refused to allow fuel to cross the border but aid leaders say fuel is essential to power water pumps, with water quickly running out in Gaza.

Israel-Hamas war live: aid trucks enter Gaza but UN warns action needed to end ‘godawful nightmare’ (theguardian.com)

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to the Hamas claim that it wanted to release more hostages on humanitarian grounds but that Israel had declined to receive them.

From Reuters:

Abu Ubaida, spokesman for Hamas’ armed wing, said it informed Qatar of the group’s intention to release the two additional people on Friday, the same day it freed Americans Judith Tai Ranaan and her daughter Natalie.

In a later statement, Abu Ubaida said Hamas was ready to free the two people on Sunday “using the same procedures” involved in the release of Judith and Natalie.

The Palestinian group captured around 210 people during its deadly assault in southern Israel on Oct. 7. Qatar, which helped mediate Friday’s release, had no immediate comment.

In a brief statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said: “We will not refer to false propaganda by Hamas.”

The statement added: “We will continue to act in every way to return all the kidnapped and missing people home.”

Qatar’s strategy: Convince Hamas that freeing hostages is the only way to avert war

Qatar played a central role in securing the surprise release Friday of an American mother and daughter held hostage by Hamas. Now that Judith Raanan and her daughter, Natalie, are free, negotiators in Qatar hope that the release of more captives by Hamas “could lead to wider dialogue or mediation,” aimed at averting a full-scale war, a diplomat with knowledge of the talks told NBC News on Saturday.

There were “ups and downs” during the discussions, said the diplomat, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly. Ultimately the American mother and daughter walked free because negotiators were able to convince Hamas that the unconditional release of two hostages could serve as a confidence building measure.

The unconditional release of  all the hostages would  really "build confidence", imo.

Israeli strikes in Gaza said to ramp up

Reports claim that Israeli shelling of Gaza is intensifying, after the IDF said it would step up strikes to create the conditions needed for the next phase of the war, expected to be a ground-based offensive.

Reports in Hebrew-language media offer few details of the intensified bombardments. An Al Jazeera correspondent says the strikes are centered around the Nusseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, calling them “really terrifying.”

Made me ill when I read it.
But, I guess I am not surprised. :(

IMO it's part of the information war. I think there are other bigger & more realistic risks than attempts to use cyanide dispersal systems remotely on an enemy

But it did take me back to 2002/2003 and the dodgy dossier ( WMD as pretext)
