BBM. Am I the only one who finds the words from the Israel PC to be a tad too authoritarian from a human rights perspective?

I didn't realize Arab citizens of Israel do not enjoy Freedom of Speech/Expression and are being arrested and detained for it. I think this could pose a problem in terms of how much $$$$ taxpayers in the U.S. are going to be willing to spend on military support for Israel's war that it claims is against Hamas but the words from the PC seem to give police the power to unfairly profile--and detain-- Palestinians.

This is not an unfounded concern, especially considering that Israel’s National Security Minister is Itamar Ben Gvir:

“Mr Ben Gvir leads the ultranationalist Otzma Yehudit or "Jewish Power" party which espouses racist, anti-Arab policies. He has previous convictions for inciting racism and supporting terrorism.”
“In December he was made a top minister by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who gave him a seat in his security cabinet and put him in charge of the domestic police, as well as Israel's militarised border police force that operates in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank.”

NYT corrects report claiming trucks carrying aid entered Gaza without inspection

The New York Times issues a correction to a report claiming trucks carrying aid entered Gaza without being inspected for weapons, saying it misquoted UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric and that he stressed Israel was aware of the vehicles’ contents.

I am not sure that Qatar are the bad guys ... I think they are more like the "Switzerland" of the ME.

Remember that they were asked by the US to set up a communications channel with Hamas (back in 2012). The US did not want Hamas setting up their base in Iran or Lebanon for fear that no-one neutral (or otherwise) would then be able to communicate with Hamas.

Ismail Haniyeh (self exiled Hamas leader) may live in Qatar, but the US also has its largest ME military base in Qatar.

Weird.....
My sister lives there. She's a professional.

She likes it. But I don't ask many questions.
She does get alot of sun and has a dark tan from her preferred sport. Legs, arms etc. But she's not a commoner.

Freedom of speech in the USA does not apply to the world. There are laws in every country regarding freedom of speech. In Canada, people can say what they want as long as they respect the autonomy of others. For example, anyone who promotes the false idea that the Holocaust did not happen is prosecuted for hate speech. In the USA, people like that are not arrested. It's important to understand the law in other countries before suggesting that people in other countries do not enjoy freedom of speech. They do, but it has to be respectful.
BBM. Hate speech is prosecuted in the U.S. if it is used to incite violence against others. The young woman I was referring to in my post was not inciting violence. She mentioned her faith and the flag of the citizenry with whom she identifies. She was arrested by Israeli police and in custody for several days. In the U.S. that would be a clear violation of her civil rights.

Israel-Hamas war live: Strikes on Gaza to increase from today, Israeli spokesperson says (theguardian.com)
7m ago00.43 BST

Israel’s evacuation of the northern town of Kiryat Shmona near the Lebanese border allowed the military to broaden its actions against Hezbollah, an Israeli army spokesperson has said.

Israel and Hezbollah both reported exchanges of fire on other points along the frontier on Saturday, including around Lebanon’s Alma Al-Shaab and Israel’s Hanita, an area where Hezbollah – a Hamas ally – said it fired guided missiles and Israel responded, Reuters reports.

The Palestinian group Islamic Jihad, which has a presence in southern Lebanon, said one of its members was killed in Saturday’s fighting.

If Arab leaders and communities in the Middle East had any courage, they would label Hamas terrorists for what they are, they would acknowledge that the actions of Gaza based Hamas terrorists are inhuman, and those Arab leaders would work together with Israel to overthrow the terrorist Hamas government.

Instead, they sit back whining and complaining that the war that Hamas started is causing problems for the people of Gaza, but they don't blame Hamas or the Gaza government. They blame the victim: Israel. They don't want people from Gaza in their countries, for obvious reasons, but they won't condemn what they did.

She has to abide by the law of her country. We have known for a long time that USA freedom of speech law is much looser than it is in most countries. She messed up during a war. Hopefully she doesn't make the same mistake again.

Thank you for the link! I had never heard of Itamar Ben Gvir. This is what happens when a politician appoints an extremist into a position of power and authority. I'm glad the U.S. called him out for his hateful rhetoric.

I'm talking to the Israelis, says Biden

On Saturday, US President Joe Biden was asked if he was encouraging Israel to delay any ground offensive into the Gaza Strip.

In response, Biden simply said he was "talking to the Israelis".

Israel is widely expected to launch the offensive, but the timing remains unknown.

In the meantime, Israel has put Gaza under siege, cutting off essential supplies.

This is incorrect, she was not held for 2 days because of a single photo of a flag and for merely "mentioning" her faith. I think there is probably a different amount of tolerance for violations of their laws during wartime. MOO

She is accused of " promoting hate speech and public incitement" through her social media platforms.

"This arrest is part of the ongoing efforts to curb online incitement and endorsement of terrorism.

It came on the heels of numerous social media posts and public complaints regarding the influencer's contentious content, specifically targeting the State of Israel and voicing support for Palestine."

Edit to add We are not seeing all of her posts on multiple platforms, and don't know what influence and effect she intends to accomplish or exactly what she will be "charged" with.

I realize that information changes fast during conflict, but I really wish journalists would verify before they rush to put information out.

Blinken thanks Qatar's PM in phone call

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Qatari prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Saturday, Blinken's spokesman has said.

In a phone call, Blinken thanked Qatar for its "important assistance" in ensuring the release of two US citizens taken by Hamas on 7 October.

Judith and Natalie Raanan were released in a Qatar-brokered deal on Friday, but Israel estimates that about 210 others are still held hostage in Gaza.

Blinken's spokesman said the pair discussed efforts to secure the immediate and safe return of all hostages.

The war is with people who grew up under the Hamas government, who were educated in their schools, and who emerged as young adults capable of torturing and murdering babies. This isn't a small gang of street thugs. This is a terrorist organization that brutally tortured, raped, and murdered 1400 people in a few hours. That terrorist organization bears the same name as the elected government of Gaza. We cannot separate the terrorists from the elected government.

We can exclude the people of Gaza who had nothing to do with committing the 1400 murders, and who had nothing to do with educating the terrorists. Everyone else had a hand in it, in my humble opinion.

IDF, Shin Bet announce strike on terror cell at mosque in Jenin

The Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet say a military aircraft struck an “underground terror route” at a mosque in the northern West Bank city of Jenin where members of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad were sheltering.

In a joint statement, the security agencies said the IDF carried out the strike after receiving intelligence that the cell was planning an imminent attack, without elaborating.

The Shin Bet and military said the terror operatives were using the mosque as a base to plan and carry out attacks, including the recent detonation of an explosive near Israeli troops along the West Bank security barrier. No soldiers were hurt in the blast.

The statement also said Israeli forces raided the mosque during a major operation in Jenin over the summer, uncovering “terror infrastructure” and armaments.

The Palestinian Authority’s official Wafa news agency said one person was killed and several others injured in the Israeli strike.
