UN chief visits Egypt’s Rafah crossing ahead of Gaza aid delivery

The UN secretary-general, António Guterres, visits the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip

The UN secretary-general, António Guterres, has visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing with Gaza to oversee preparations for the delivery of aid to the war-torn territory.

Cargo planes and trucks have been bringing humanitarian aid to Rafah for days, but so far none has been delivered to the Gaza Strip, which Israel has besieged and bombed for 13 days.

“We are actively engaging with all the parties, with Egypt, Israel, the United States... in order to have these trucks moving as soon as possible,” Guterres told journalists on Friday.

Rafah is the only crossing into the blockaded Palestinian territory that is not controlled by Israel, which agreed to allow aid to enter after a request from the US.

Earlier on Friday, the UN humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, said the first aid delivery via the Rafah crossing should take place “in the next day or so”.

Guterres said there was an “absolute need to have these trucks moving as soon as possible and as many as necessary”, adding that “this must be a sustained effort”.

“We are not looking for one convoy to come but we are looking for convoys to be authorised in a meaningful number to have enough trucks to provide support to Gaza’s people,” the UN chief said.

Will the UN chief also be visting Israel? Since he is in the area, I would hope that he would do so and see the results of the vicious and inhumane Hamas massacre on Israel. See the Israeli bodies piled up that can't even be identified. Meet with the families of over 200 young people who were shot down at a music festival, parents of infants who were beheaded and burned, and families of hostages who are children, infants, disabled, and elderly.

Edited to change "vicious and inhumane Hamas attack on Israell" to read "vicious and inhumane massacre on Israel"

afaik the UN has been demanding/calling release of hostages for over a week now

It's been in a lot of older WS posts on previous threads

ETA
I can see the posts going back to at least the 13th of October ( as well as being in the UN Security Council resolutions - votes on Tues or Weds?)
Here's today's call
True but not near the effort for humanitarian aid. Yea, initially but it's in the background. Moo

No, the agreement was no fuel and only 20 trucks.

Hamas has fuel, as long as rockets are being fired.

Maybe these authorities need to be speaking with Hamas and the Palestinians leaders to share fuel with hospitals and give up the hostages.

Moo.
it's not the same kind of fuel

diesel generators in hospitals produce electricity

rocket ' fuel'

'To this end, the rockets are propelled by a solid mixture of sugar and potassium nitrate, a common fertilizer. The warhead is filled with smuggled or scavenged TNT and urea nitrate, another common fertilizer. The warhead's explosive material is similar to the civilian explosive ammonite.'

''KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel said Friday it does not plan to take long-term control over the Gaza Strip after an expected ground offensive to root out Hamas militants that rule the territory. The Israeli military punished Gaza with airstrikes, and authorities inched closer to bringing aid to desperate families and hospitals, as people across Muslim countries protested in solidarity with Palestinians.''

Gallant did not say who Israel expected to run Gaza if Hamas is toppled.''

''Israel occupied Gaza from 1967 until 2005, when it pulled up settlements and withdrew soldiers. Two years later, Hamas took over. Some Israelis blame the withdrawal from Gaza for the sporadic violence that has persisted since then.''
interesting

The agriculture minister yesterday told Channel 4 that it would be a job for others to do
unspecified ' international community'
Who is that?

Is he saying that people like you & me - indirectly- have to pay to rebuild and then run Gaza ? Or does he mean Israel's main business partners ( Trading partners China, India, Germany as well as USA?)

Humanitarian funding and cuts to it, by whom & when. note that the Gulf states also cut their humanitarian aid too . 2021 article UN Palestine refugee aid agency ‘close to collapse’ after funding cuts

I wish the UN would try, half this hard to have the hostages released.

Kinda one sided in my mind.
Moo
There isn't much they can do.
There are different councils within the UN.
The UN supplies aid and I believe sometimes arms. But that's about all they do.

They work on treaties, encourage this and that....

I don't believe they get involved with hostage negotiations. I don't think they have the capability.

The security council is the most powerful.
US vetoed a vote https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/18/europe/us-veto-security-council-israel-gaza-war-intl/index.html

It's really up to Israel, Israel's allies, Palestinians (probably don't have much power), and Hamas's negotiators to get the hostages released. It's a real dirty job. It involves lots of intelligence and often backroom deals. The Hamas negotiators are probably dirty as "F". The Hamas negotiators are shadowy foreign groups who are supporting Hamas. But often that's what it takes.

The UN just isn't up to it. They are too transparent.

Well, I certainly learned something new. Thanks.

They can/will accost to supply their own generators. They recently stole 2 truck loads from a relief group. So they must have a use.

I have no doubt that the Israeli government has a reason and knows what it is doing as they fight this war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Fair enough. It’s not the same kind of fuel.

So how about the MONEY and TIME spent on obtaining rocket fuel was INSTEAD invested in the diesel fuel needed for the welfare of the people there, and not for the warfare against Israel?

The money trail exposes the priorities there.

Israel needs to improve the aim of its air strikes. Hitting a Greek Orthodox church is just as inexcusable as hitting a hospital. I respect their war on Hamas terrorists--but if their believed locations are near hospitals or any house of worship--the assault should be done by Israeli ground troops.

I didn't know how they made their rockets either so I learned something new too !

Nope they don’t. Do we know if the Hamas terrorists that brutalized Israel reside in Gaza? I’m curious about this.

Hamas is setting up at or besides these sites. They know they are protected.

It was one outside wall, not the entire structure. Photos up thread.

From article via @cottonweaver:

This man so bravely and lovingly sacrificed himself for his wife it seems. :(

“Lior's father, Haim Peri, also went missing from Nir Or during the attack.
Haim used to drive sick children from Gaza to Israeli hospitals. Some of the artwork he loved to collect is still standing amid the debris scattered through the house and garden.

Haim and his wife, Osnat, were hiding in their safe room when Hamas gunmen first broke in. The door to the safe room held fast, but the gunmen returned with reinforcements.

This time, Lior says, Haim told his wife to hide behind the sofa in the safe room, then opened the door and gave himself up.

His wife was still hiding when a second group of people burst in - less disciplined, more destructive. They ransacked the house. The door to the safe room was still open, but it was dark inside and they did not bother to look.

Haim has now been formally listed as a hostage.”

Though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had called areas in southern Gaza “safe zones” earlier this week, Israeli military spokesman Nir Dinar said Friday: “There are no safe zones.”

Mashaal: Hamas ‘well aware of consequences’ of attack, liberation demands ‘sacrifices

Terror group’s former leader falsely claims it doesn’t target civilians, says Israel ‘is defeated, its strategy has collapsed’

In a new interview, Hamas official Khaled Mashal has said the terror group is “well aware of the consequences” of its brutal October 7 attack on Israel, insisted his group — which massacred some 1,000 civilians in the assault — does not target non-combatants, and said Palestinians will need to sacrifice lives in order to “liberate” themselves from Israel.

At one centre, we were shown more than a dozen shipping containers, their shelves stacked with body bags of all different sizes.
Staff say the remains of around 1,000 people have passed through here - some in the care of Captain Maayan. Army regulations mean she cannot give her last name.
"I didn't see one body that was shot just once," she told me.
"In each body, I saw abuses and torture, and so many cuts, so many gunshots, so many bruises to the head and to the limbs. It doesn't feel like we're in war and we're seeing casualties. It feels like we're in a massacre, and we're looking at a massacre."

It doesn't matter that it was an outside wall! Innocent people taking shelter in the church were killed. Israel knew the church was there.

JMO

Video from the scene at the church compound showed a wounded boy being carried from the rubble in the dark of the night. A civil defence worker said two people on upper floors had survived. Those on lower floors had been killed and were still in the rubble, the worker said.
