Wow, amazing transcript between the coast guard and the captian.

Coast Guard: There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?

Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!

Lot's more at the link.

My sympathies to all passengers and their families.

Just horrific.

And yet even after these conversations he still denied leaving the ship before the passengers got off!

From the link:

Captain: Do you realize that it is dark and we can't see anything?

It was dark and they got to where they were at when they talking, but it was too dark to go back?!?!

Thanks for the compliment :)

Do you mean this "live" Port Everglades link?

http://portevergladeswebcam.com/

I'm not sure that there are cruise ships departing PE daily, but weekends are especially busy for 7-night sailings that depart on Saturday or Sunday. There are 10-night cruises that leave every 10 days, so their departure schedules vary between a weekend sail day and a mid-week sail day. There are also 3- or 4-night cruises that depart on the weekend and/or mid-week.

If you're watching the webcam on the weekend, there will be multiple ships leaving between 4-6PM on Saturday and Sunday throughout the winter months for the Caribbean season. If you happen to be awake very early on Saturday or Sunday morning, you can see the ships returning from their 7-night voyages usually between 6-7:00AM.

I hope that's the website that you referenced :D

Virtually every staff and crew member onboard a cruise ship has assigned duties during muster drills that are their responsibility in the event of a real emergency. This is part of their contract with the cruise line, and they are required to participate in training in various emergency and/or evacuation procedures. In a perfect world, they would rise to the occasion if it became necessary. But, human life as it is, and with the reality of a perilous situation like that of the Concordia looming, Officers, staff, and crew went into "survival mode": They all knew that the ship was going down and that there was little that they could do to prevent the disaster. jmo

"Survival mode" for the officers and crew is NOT acceptable when passengers are still on board.

The Captain is really reckless and cowardly. This disaster would of never happened if it was not too close to land just for the head server's family. :furious:

Wow. Just wow. I personally feel Schettino should'nt be allowed to captain another ship, ever. That sounds harsh, and sometimes people make mistakes ; but lives were lost and they still haven't found everyone !
Those passengers need to be refunded their ticket prices--and not a 'voucher' for another trip....not sure many of those passengers will want to travel soon.
jmo.
Wanted to add that it's dangerous for the searchers as well ; this captain has put lives at risk and for what ?

I doubt he'll ever be hired for a cruise line, after his prison sentence is up

I think his nautical career is in the toilet, and I've taken the liberty of swapping the first vowel in his last name from e to i ;)

I heart the port authority officer demanding that coward back aboard the ship!!

Do we know his name yet?

Yes of course we know the captain's name. He is under arrest.

Yep. I really doubt he got a bright future as a ship captain for a cruise line, or any other line.

Excerpted from post #177:

...Schettino has insisted that he stayed aboard until the ship was evacuated. However, a recording of his conversation with Italian Coast Guard Capt. Gregorio De Falco indicates he fled before all passengers were off — and then resisted De Falco's repeated orders to return.

"You go on board and then you will tell me how many people there are. Is that clear?" De Falco shouted in the audio tape.

Schettino resisted, saying the ship was tipping and it was dark. At the time, he and his second-in-command were in a lifeboat and the captain said he was coordinating the rescue from there. He also said he was not going back aboard the ship "because the other lifeboat is stopped." Passengers have said many lifeboats on the exposed port side of the ship didn't winch down after the ship had capsized.

De Falco shouted back: "And so what? You want to go home, Schettino? It is dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the pilot ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what their needs are. Now!"...

"You go aboard. It is an order. Don't make any more excuses. You have declared 'Abandon ship,' now I am in charge," De Falco shouted.

At one point, De Falco vowed: "I'm going to make sure you get in trouble. ... I am going to make you pay for this. Go on board, (expletive)!"

I am amazed that there aren't more people dead, considering what surviving passengers describe went on. Sounds like it was a complete mess.

I believe that the poster was asking the name of the Italian Coast Guard Officer who demanded that "Captain Coward" return to his ship. He is Captain Gregorio De Falco.
