Agreed, and I pray for no volcano eruption for them...
I just cannot even imagine...
That's right, I forgot about the possibility of volcanoes, not to mention the possibility of radiation in some areas.

Saying that helicopters will be able to make rescues pretty fast, once they can get them up and running, and considering that the entire country is the size of California, they will be able to move quickly by air.

The navy will play a large role, likely sine they will be able move eaier and communicate better than those that are land bound. (Although the comparison that was made to Vietnam made me cringe a little inside.)

4 million homes without power. 151 confirmed dead. Over 700 injuries. 530 reported missing. So far. Coming up on daybreak, so there will be more in the way of official estimates and probably a better look at what is sure to be total devastation.

I am going to buy earthquake supplies TODAY. I'm not taking any chances. I lived through Loma Prieta and it is just logical that we could be affected by this. I need one of those wind up radios though. Water, food, Batteries, personal protection items...

You're up by San Fran right? And don't forget any prescriptions (shewww..picked up mine yesterday). I think I'll stick close to home for a bit (no trips to the beach and staying off the freeways). With gas prices the way they are, I'm pretty much doing that now anyway). At least my cats have calmed down -- that's always a good sign :)

Hugs,

Mel

This is all just unbelievable...:(

(not to make light of it, but on 30 Rock last night, they were doing celebrity bits for the next disaster, to have them ready to go, not knowing what the disaster would be or when...yikes...)

Nooooo! I want to get mad, but I just cant. People really need to educate themselves about the dangers.

When I lived in San Fernando Valley, we lived next to the dam. When it rained, we (as kids) would go out there and watch the water. It's a wonder I'm still here! No fences back in the day; anyone could go right up to it (many miles long).

As an adult, he/she "should" have known betta.

Every spring, at least one teenager drowns in the "arroyos" here which fill up almost instantly with heavy, short downfalls...no matter how much the news pounds on it, about staying out of them, etc...the kids like to skateboard in them...
I wouldn't be shocked to hear of a few surfers losing their lives in CA either...

What is the full population of Japan?

Please, please--Everyone make sure you have your emergency supply kits ready, and remember pet supplies for your pets, too. Remember to pack a can opener and water purification tablets. Have a plan in place for your family, in case disaster strikes. Know where and how to shut off your electricity and gas.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me.

Rooftop rescues are already underway.

They are continuing to search for folks in Crescent City that have been washed out to sea. Coast Guard confirms one dead, one missing, 2 made it back to land.

No new info that I can find about either the new eq, or the nuclear reactor. All I can say is when something strong enough to open a new fissure in the ocean floor 150 miles x 50 miles, we all need to be exceptionally aware of any fault line under our feet.

God be with all those who have been affected...both here in the US and most especially in Japan.

What is it with people? The town is a known Tsunami magnet and there have been alot of deaths over the years. And again it happens? Maybe authorities need to post Tsunami death toll signs there.

A small leak has now become a reporters statement that there might be a large radiation area around that power plant and reactor. They are working hard to get power to that plant so that they can cool it, but so far no luck, the power grid is badly damaged.

Growing up in L.A., it seemed that whenever Japan had a quake, we got one not too long after. That's my official unscientific opinion.

Oregon Coast tsunami: Serious damage reports from Brookings port

Reports of serious damage are coming from the Port of Brookins-Harbor in the wake of Friday's earthquake-tsunami in Japan.

Chris Cantwell, the port's operations supervisor said 70 percent of the port's commercial basin was destroyed.

[snip]

"We had one fatality ... dead body found in a boat. Not entirely sure the guy died during the tsunami. Possibly before," he said.

[snip]

The Brookings harbor sustained millions of dollars in damage, said City Manager Gary Milliman, who toured the area. About 60 to 85 percent of the commercial dock is destroyed, he said, by a surge of water rushing in around 10:40 a.m.

[snip]

He said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration measured 6-foot waves off Port Orford earlier today. Most waves rolling in now are in the 5-foot range, Kendall said. As they surge out, other waves push towards the shore, creating a powerful and dangerous thrust.

Radiation level around that plant is 1000 times the usual level. 6 miles have been evacuated.

On CNN, they are saying that it still is not dangerous enough to cause health effects. They say they are evacuating mainly because of fear and trying to keep it from causing panic. if it were to double from here, it would be dangerous, and it will likely raise again as they vent the reactor. They do not believe there will be a health risk, as of now. It likely won't be anytime soon that the reactor is stabilized.

Tsunami alert for Easter Islands, Chile's coast will be the next area hit by the tsunami, within the next 4 hours, Easter Island within two.

I saw 2 blips on twitter news sites regarding this:

2 staffers are missing at that nuke plant
pressure is now 2 times the normal level

I have to admit, I have to go with what the news is telling me because I know Diddly Squat about nuclear power. I have heard that they are trying to get power to the reactor to cool it and I have heard that they are trying to maintain power to the reactor, so I don't know if they have power, or are on backup, or if they have nothing at all.
