Joan Rivers 'stopped breathing' in surgery

Advance Directives are wonderful things IF the family honors them. I have seen too many Advance Directives overturned by family members who could not bear to let go. Doctors do not advocate for dying family members when they are afraid of being sued by living ones. Your Advance Directive is just a piece of paper unless your loved ones adhere to your wishes.

I would never believe anthing E -whoever reports. Why don't they just tell the truth as to what is going on? Did Joan have a DNR?

If by "they" you mean the hospital staff, they are not allowed to say anything about her condition whatsoever without her daughter's permission. I assume whatever information was put out was dictated by Melissa.

It's like losing one of your favorite aunties; the one who lets you have ice cream for breakfast or put her high heels and red lipstick on when you are 8 years old. :)

Joan Rivers teased the royal family for decades, but thankfully, they were in on the joke.

The Fashion Police host was " surrounded by family and close friends " at the time of her death Thursday.

In a statement released to E! News Friday morning, Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles offered their condolences. "The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Joan Rivers," a Clarence House spokesperson said. His Royal Highness, 65, added that the comedy icon, 81, "was an extraordinary woman with an original and indefatigable spirit, an unstoppable sense of humor and an enormous zest for life. She will be hugely missed and utterly irreplaceable." ...

Joan Rivers: How a minor elective surgery could end in death (Includes video)

By Jen Christensen, CNN

updated 9:13 AM EDT, Sat September 6, 2014

(CNN) -- Comedian Joan Rivers lost her life after having an apparently minor elective procedure at a Manhattan medical clinic last week.

The routine surgery was on her throat, according to the New York Fire Department. She apparently suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest during the procedure at Yorkville Endoscopy. She was transferred by ambulance to Mount Sinai Hospital and died on Thursday.

The outpatient clinic is now being investigated by the New York State Department of Health, according to its spokesperson, James O'Hara...

...Doctors say just because a surgery is called routine or elective doesn't necessarily mean it is simple...

Joan Rivers: The Entertainer

There was nobody like her. Some people are knockoffs or imitations of other, stronger, more vivid figures, but there was never another Joan Rivers before her or while she lived. She was a seriously wonderful, self-invented woman.

She was completely open and immediately accessible. She had the warmth of a person who found others keenly and genuinely interesting. It was also the warmth of a person with no boundaries: She wanted to know everything about you and would tell you a great deal about herself, right away. She had no edit function, which in part allowed her gift. She would tell you what she thought. She loved to shock, not only an audience but a friend. I think from the beginning life startled her, and she enjoyed startling you. You only asked her advice or opinion if you wanted an honest reply.

I am sad to hear of the news of Joan passing away.
I saw her perform back in the 80's with David Brenner.
Joan, you always made me laugh since I was a child, and I
followed your career and smiled often. You were blunt but so funny. Joan was a classic.
As a comic, you were one of the icons we looked up to.
I love Fashion Police. :)

Rest in Peace Joan
Thank you for the wonderful memories
You will be missed

Good thoughts go out to your family and friends

[h=3]Crowds gather for private Joan Rivers funeral[/h]
NEW YORK (AP) - Joan Rivers' plans for an elaborate, over-the-top funeral may not be exactly what she will get, but it may be close.

The comedian detailed in her 2012 book "I Hate Everyone ... Starting With Me" that she hoped for "a huge showbiz affair with lights, cameras, action" and "Hollywood all the way." Instead of a rabbi talking, Rivers asked for "Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents" and "a wind machine so that even in the casket my hair is blowing just like Beyonce's."
The actual event Sunday may be slightly more muted. Funeral services at Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan will be private and neither the temple nor Rivers' personal publicist would give further details or divulge a guest list. It was not even known what time the funeral would start. But cameras and a media presence was very likely.

Joan Rivers gets showbiz send-off with New York funeral

By Alan Duke, CNN

updated 1:21 PM EDT, Sun September 7, 2014

(CNN) -- Joan Rivers is getting the "Hollywood" funeral she wanted, "a huge showbiz affair with lights, camera and action."

Mourners walked a red carpet into a synagogue in Manhattan on Sunday morning, where the New York City Gay Men's Chorus would open the service with song.

Whoopi Goldberg, Donald Trump, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and Joy Behar were among the A-list to D-list celebrity friends seen arriving for the private service inside Temple Emanu-El.

Rivers, 81, died Thursday in New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, a week after she suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest during a medical procedure at a clinic...
