Afternoon testimony
--Back to the texts from the 11th, Exhibit 449, JA is asked to review the texts to herself. Texts started on May 11th, from 0200-0300 in the morning. (if she did her math right). This is two days after the text messages discussed before the lunch break.
--These texts came the day after the sex tape from May 10, 2008. Approximately 24 hours after the phone sex tape. Martinez objects, lack of foundation. Judge asks JA to go through all the messages and if she recognizes them all. Nurmi moves to admit Exhibit 449, Martinez objects, hearsay, judge asks lawyers to approach the bench.
--Nurmi asks JA if TA said nice things in the messages and asked if they made her feel good about herself. Did it make her feel better about continuing her relationship with Travis? JA says it did. Martinez objects, leading.
--Evidence is admited with the same stipulation.

--JA says that it was preferable to the alternative. Nurmi asks if the alternative was her shaking...
--JA is being asked to review text messages from May 25-May 26, 2008. She remembers that day well. On those dates she had called Travis, she had sent him another pamphlet with the mental health phone numbers and he got upset which started the fight. The names Travis called her,

, three hole wonder, where part of this fight. Exhibit 450 texts were the start of the fight.
--Nurmi moves to enter Exhibit 450 into evidence. Martinez objects, lack of foundation, impact on the defendant. Judge sustains the objection.
--Nurmi asks: "Is that the wrath that you feared? Did it make you shake? At first it did, I was asleep, when she read it she shook. Whenever the phone would make a noise she would have anxiety. The exhibit it now entered into evidence.
--Nurmi now wants to ask her about some of the things that was included in TA's wrath. Message 14829 from Travis, "I sent you a response to your dire conversation"...."everyone else is just part of your sick agenda", "if he knew what I knew about you he would spit in your face", <did not catch all of the texts>
--JA says that TA didn't want to talk about his sexual preference, attraction to young boys in text messages.
--message 14830, "you couldn't get off your lazy butt to read it, that's the sociopath I know"...
--TA called her but she says she was sleeping and groggy and disoriented, would have to go into her grandmother's room to read email on the computer. Says she slept back into sleep and TA was mad that JA did not get up and read it.
--How did she feel when Travis called her a sociopath? It didn't make her feel good but it wasn't the worse thing he had called her.
--Travis: "I want you to understand how evil I think you are"..."you are the worse thing that has happened to me".
--Nurmi asks how it made her feel. JA says that it made her feel "not good".
--JA apologizes to TA, says that TA and JA were night owls but TA wouldn't have understood what
--JA said that she used to be able to get up and turn on her own laptop, she didn't want TA to get mad.
--Nurmi asks "sounds like you did a lot because you didn't want him to be mad".
--Travis: "You are a sociopath, you never cared about me....." <there's more, I missed them all>
--JA says that she made TA promise that he would get help. She also made TA promise that he wouldn't stay at a friend's house because they had children. She says that he's on the tape talking about anally raping a 12 year old.
--TA felt like she was pushing him and pushing him to take the steps to get help. She says she was urging him to get help and he didn't like that.
--JA was working at Casa Romos in May 2008. A Mexican family restaurant. Nurmi asks if she ever referred to it as Margaretaville? She says "no, I thought that was a country song".
--Nurmi now asking about her photography business. She had booked some end of school year photo shoots as well as another wedding. Her business was taking flight, she had a job, Nurmi asks why did she feel like she had to send him the pamphlets and urge him to get help?
--She says it was because there were times when he was so sweet and so nice and then he would get pissed off and say things like that.
--In late May 2008, Jodi says her interest in Ryan was to just to get to know him. She didn't remember interacting with him in OK. Asked if her and Ryan had made plans to get together, they were to get together in early June.
--Utah wasn't her only destination, she says she had a lot of destinations. Her first destination was going to be Monteray, CA. Planned to drive to Monteray on June 2nd...early in the morning.
--At the end of the text conversation it led to an online chat conversation to a telephone conversation and her and TA were determining when he would come visit.
--Now asking about her grandparents home being broken into on May 28th. Doesn't remember who called her, somebody called her sister, they were out of cell range. They went straight home after receiving the message.
--JA and her sister were in Hilt at a buddhist monestry. Close to the Oregon border which is 15-20 minutes from Yreka. Her and her sister went straight back to her grandparents home.
--Nurmi asks Jodi if she broke into her grandparents home to steal the gun. JA says she did not. JA is asked if she orchestrated the break in.
--Nurmi asks JA if she had wanted the gun she could have taken it? JA says she didn't know her grandfather had a handgun. Learned of the handgun being stolen eventually. Did not know it when she first arrived. Grandmother told her the hand gun was stolen...on the same day.
--Back to the road trip. First stop was Monteray which is 7-7.5 hours from Yreka. Purpose was a stopover as she had friends there and then wanted to continue to L.A Friends in Monteray were Matt and Daryl.
--Her plan was to go to Monteray then the Los Angeles area then maybe San Diego to visit John Dixon then cut up through Nevada to death valley...she map quested it...was going to see some national parks there.
--Wanted to go see death valley, national parks, wanted to photograph them and then get back on the road. Intention to go to all these destinations was to drive. She owned an infinity in May 2008. The plan was to not take the Infinity. She says she was broke and unable to keep up the payments and wasn't able to keep up the maintenance. It was also a gas hog. She wanted to rent a more fuel economic car.
--Went to Redding to rent the car..went to Price line or Expedia or one of those travel websites, she was headed south so going south made more sense. Says she drove her car to Redding.
--To the best of her recollection she had to give her name, phone number and payment info to the car rental company.
--Recalls going to the Redding airport to rent the car. Remembers talking to Mr. Columbo (car rental staff). Spoke to Columbo five minutes the first time then came back in and spoke to him five minutes the second time.
--Saw it was a red car and asked for a different color car because she was always told not to drive a red car.
--Documents from the car rental company says the car smelled like smoke. JA says that Columbo put that on there to justify the change in car color.
--Columbo said he had never had that request. Martinez objects, speculation, overruled.
--re: JA's hair color, Columbo testified that she had blonde hair when she showed up to rent the car. Nurmi shows a photo of Jodi and a black dog where here hair is lighter and the photo was taken May 15, 2008.
--re: hair color in the photo from May 15, 2008...JA says her hair color was similar to that in the photo.
--After she rents the car, the white ford focus, she goes to her brothers place and takes a nap. This would be late morning now and that is when she got on the road.
--JA says she did not have a gun or knife with her. Has a cell phone with her. The Helio cell phone and a charger.
--Hits the road, Interstate 5 south, was supposed to meet with Gus, didn't make it to see him as she was tired because she talked to Travis during the night.
--Went to a McDonalds parking lot and took a nap. Then drove to Santa Cruz to meet Matt.
--re: conversation with Travis , they talked about Gordon Hinkley who was a member of the church who had passed away.
--TA knew she was going on the trip but she doesn't remember if she told him about Matt.
--TA knew she was on her way to Utah, TA didn't know about her going to Monteray, he knew she would go south and then cut up to go to Utah.
--Met Matt and his friend in Santa Cruz in the evening, not too late as there wer still restaurants and bars open, met them in a bar/lounge restaurant called the Red Room.
--Sat around and had appetizers then went to a karoake bar.
--Purpose was completely social, no romantic interest for years and years, they broke up in 2001 but they were still friends.
--After the karoake bar she follows Matt and his friend to an apartment. She spends the night.
--re: banking transactions from Washington Mutual. Looked like more than one bank account. JA says that after she moved to Yreka she opened a business checking account in addition to her personal account. Purpose of writing the checks back and forth, didn't do it in Yreka because the banks weren't open yet, didn't know where the banks were in Redding, had lived in Monteray so she knew where the banks were. Her business made no money so she would write herself a check and put it into her personal account. Part of the reason she was going to see Ryan was for PPL and she would be able to write of trips as business tax writeoffs.
--Several hundred dollars, JA says it was under $1000, she doesn't think it was too much.
--Intention to pay for things along the way was going to be cash or debit, kept close to $100 in cash for emergencies.
--After visiting Matt she visits Daryl at his apartment in Monteray. Jack is Daryl's son. Has breakfast with them. They have omlettes. Spent a half hour there enjoying each other's company, hanging out. This would be the morning of the 3rd.
--Borried 2 gas cans from Daryl. Gas in Yreka was expensive because California has stricter regulations. She didn't tell Daryl to keep it a secret.
--Says she did not tell Daryl she was going to Mesa.
