Jose Baez Press Conference - Wed., 1/21/09

"Well, Casey always boasted she knows a bit of spanish so maybe they'll think she's swell as well."

You know, RR, when Jose starting speaking spanish to the reporter, my immediate thought was-
AH-HA! That is why Casey got that spanish dictionary through commisary! To impress Jose by morphing for/and mirroring him! :shakehead:
It was my first thought, too!!! Exactly!!

Headline news defense guest speakers just bashing Jose and his comments about the latino population. They said he will be getting all kinds of harrasing phone calls from other hispanick lawyers protesting his comment of being the first hispanic lawyer to trial this big of case. One of our posters suggested that it would be a good idea to hold the trial in northern Fla. where the people aren't as forgiving and would want to tar and feather our criminal KC.

the only chance baez has at an aquittal is a non-english speaking jury.

Well, in that case he may have a point with Miami. The Cuban community has been distrustful of LE. I'm guessing it goes back to how they feel about Castro and the government. When I lived there it was very insular (I'm sure it still is) and they prefer to really be on their own. The 2nd/3rd generation Cubans who grew up here and didn't flee from Castro/arrive with the boat lift are changing the community makeup. However, they have an uphill battle with the ZFG frame up, any of the A's real or perceived bias against Latinos, etc.

Good insight chicagofa13. May I add something further before I sign off and fix dinner for my Husband?

It has been my experience that Latinos, Hispanics whatever you choose to call that particular race of people do not clump themselves together as do say african americans. What I mean is that they are very proud of the nationality and do not identify with a race because of their skin color. So for instance, someone of Mexican-American heritage would be highly insulted if they were lumped into a category with PR's.
or Panamanian/Americans
or Cuban/American
Doesn't work that way. He just made a serious error in judgement within this community. I can't wait to hear what my Husband has to say about this when he gets home! Jeezus...we fight everyday to teach our children that they will be judged by the content of their character and this bozo gets on TV and.....I'm sorry I'll shut up now, I am very SORRY for the rant. Please accept my apology.

This is an interesting thought, but wouldn't it defensive suicide because of the obvious framing of a Latina and the comments Cindy made about not liking Hispanics?

Yea, but we're talking about Jose' here. Plus aren't they are still sticking with the nanny defense and it wasn't that Zanny, but another one?

I think Miami is a big metropolitan, tourist, party day and night town and I bet there's alot of people that never followed the case at all. That's where I would move it too..

Agree Jolynna - that pressr was anything but dumb. he got out more than one message and it will resonate.

O.J. was a super star athlete, I think that was a big factor also. I tend to think this could be a be a blunder on Baez' part, Hispanics are very pro family and this could all backfire on him....*crossing my fingers*

Is he forgetting that CA is known for being adverse to latinos, as told by KC's friend Kio? Oh, JB, what a web you weave!!

Makes you wonder why he is buttering up & playing up his Hispanic ethnicity?

BINGO.

He is doing a Cochran. Remember when Cochran said "Give me one African-American and I will hang the jury." He is gonna go after LE and play the "underdog against the system" angle.

I don't think the press conference was dumb at all. There is method to what Baez is doing.

IMO

I also do not think that JB is dumb. I may not like his methods or his personality but I do not underestimate his brains. He may whine, perhaps push protocal, annoy a lot of people BUT to paraphrase a famous song "sometimes he gets what he needs." I think JB is a master at the ol' shell game. Keep your eyes on the pea, folks.

I agree!! And I apologize if you think I am lumping anyone! I know from dating a Mexican-American that he would be furious to be called a PR, and Cubans don't want to be lumped with Mexicans, etc. They might be "Latino" but that's it!

"I have absolutely not book deals or entertainment deals of any kind." *paraphrased* He was advised to address this, even though he didn't want to. "I have nothing to hide."

Note the Language IIIIIIIIIIIII. He did not say "the casey defense fund."

Well then he has all the experts (his fellow defense atty's!) fooled. They are not being kind.

why does he hate wftv so much? that is who he was referring to as "tabloid tv", right?

I thought he meant NG and those types. But I could be wrong!!

I know.

A Hispanic audience knows if the evidence doesn't fit the crime, the man makes the evidence fit the crime!!!

Bad move on his part. Imo, Hispanics are family oriented, hardworking Folks...they will not relate to Casey. They will likely be revolted.

imo

It won't be about Casey.

It will be about a fellow Hispanic lawyer vs "the system". Casey will be looking like a wholesome unfairly accused mom victim who was unfairly used and maligned to get media ratings and bolster a political career.

Geraldo has a history of coming out like gangbusters against killers. Remember how he was with O.J.? He used to be that way about Casey before he and Baez became BFF.
