[h=1]Man found with dismembered body parts in Kansas charged in separate Palm Springs killing[/h]
A man who authorities say was found living in a Kansas storage unit with his wife’s dismembered remains in an ice chest was charged last week with the unrelated killing of a Palm Springs man.

Justin Todd Rey, 35, was charged with the May 10, 2016, killing of Sean Ty Ferel, who went missing after going on vacation with Rey, police said.
Rey is being held in Kansas’ Johnson County on two counts each of aggravated child endangerment and contributing to a child’s misconduct.

A Riverside County judge approved a $1 million warrant for Rey’s arrest on Nov. 22. A Riverside County court date has not yet been set and authorities are working on extraditing him from Kansas.

There are so many holes in this case for me. There is so much information that is still to be found. With the charges pending against him, none of it matters now; however I wonder what the official reason was that the children were removed from their care. I watched a video on his YouTube channel that is only audio of CPS returning their daughter. It sounds as if she is a newborn and was removed because of lack of prenatal care. It seems as if CPS and state authorities had so much interaction with this family. It’s just a tragedy that the mother is now dead. What happened to lead to this outcome? For someone who seems to speak love for their family to never be able to get it together to regain custody of their children and to ultimately harm the mother of the children in this way, no matter the COD, there has to be severe mental illness. Not saying that’s an excuse; however it’s all just so bizarre and unimaginable. Their lives seem so disrupted, disjointed and chaotic. I am hopeful that the children will all be able to find peace and stability. They deserve that. I believe the mother to be culpable in her actions and responsibilities in losing her children and not changing her situation. She didn’t deserve to pass in the way she did. It’s sad and I hope she is also at peace. I think I will continue to be curious regarding their life and the circumstances surrounding this tragic case. I don’t believe he will be able to stand trial and his mental stability will continue to be called into question.

Friend of accused Palm Springs killer speaks out

Local resident Pam Martin knew Justin and Jessica Rey, as well as Ferel. At one-time, Martin considered Justin Rey a friend, so when she heard the news on all three, she was in shock.

"Something like this doesn't happen all of the time," Martin said. "I couldn't believe that I saw those names there and recognized this individual."

Martin remembers first meeting Rey a few years ago on El Paseo looking for work to support his then-pregnant wife, Jessica.

Martin was even given a business card from Rey, listing occupations including sales, laborer, promoting expert, and an escort.

Yes, I kept thinking. ... this might have been a good time to have 2 different business cards. Professional and "professional". Lol. I can already tell this is the kind of person that I would hate to have a conversation with and would get on my every last nerve.

I have a feeling he will be at Larned for a long, long time! I did clinicals at Larned in nursing school and it is a super creepy place, he'll fit right in.

In December a judge said Rey is not fit to stand trial and ordered a 90-day mental evaluation. He still hasn't gotten one. The state plans to transfer him in the next two weeks. "This is illegal, all of this," Rey said as he was led out of the courtroom.

SNIPPED

They said the family was homeless and Jessica was pregnant at the time. Each person said Rey was controlling and Jessica was often fearful of him. Police reports obtained by 41 Action News from August to mid-October 2017 show Rey was no stranger to the Lenexa Police Department.
A pastor at Central Church of the Nazarene in Lenexa reported Rey several times. The family had gone there for assistance, but in September the church banned Rey from the property because they were concerned about his erratic behavior and his mental state.
In early October, the pastor reported Rey for threatening text messages. The pastor said he was in fear for his and his family's safety and told his wife to make sure the doors at home were locked. Olathe police officers watched the pastor's home for a few days.

SNIPPED

Lenexa police also came into contact with Rey in August at an extended stay hotel only two miles from the storage unit facility. A woman claimed Rey hit her vehicle with a U-Haul truck.
41 Action News talked to a woman who knew the couple and feared for Jessica's safety.
"If I could have got her off to a resource in the metropolitan area, I think she'd still be here," the woman ,who wants to be known as "Rachel," said.
Rachel said she tried to help Jessica after they met in a Lenexa fast-food bathroom in early 2017.

SNIPPED

Jessica's family in California is in the process of gaining custody of the two children.
Rey is scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m. on May 10.

‘I had to do it,’ man testifies about chopping up wife’s body in Kansas City hotel

Justin Todd Rey told a Johnson County judge Tuesday that he desperately wanted to keep his family together.

That’s why he didn’t seek medical help when his wife delivered their baby in a Kansas City hotel bath tub last fall.

And afterward, when she killed herself, Rey said, he didn’t call police.

Instead, he spent about eight hours hacking her body into pieces so he could take her corpse to Arizona along with his newborn and 2-year-old daughters.

“It’s something I had to do,” Rey testified Tuesday in Johnson County District Court. “My family is very dear to me. It’s something I had to do to protect my family.”

In an extremely unusual move, Rey testified during his preliminary hearing in Johnson County District Court, where he is charged with two counts of aggravated child endangerment and two counts of contributing to a child’s misconduct.

I have to wonder if he realizes what he was saying? How is this the first thing that comes to mind? This is not love of family, this is possession of others.

ohhhhhh myyyygod. I don't even know if I believe she killed herself. I mean I can believe she'd do it, but I also believe he'd say anything to admit that keeping her from a hospital and in their horrid living situation caused her to die in childbirth.

The prosecution outlined a map they said would lead the jury to find Rey was criminal in not caring for his children and possessed child 🤬🤬🤬🤬 on his phone. The defense argued that Rey was not a great parent, but his actions were not criminal.

The first day of the trial moved quickly. Six witnesses testified in total, each one contributing different parts of a bizarre story.
...

While there was a lot of testimony about Jessica Rey's body, Justin Rey is not charged in her death or dismemberment in Kansas. Jessica Rey is believed to have died in the Missouri hotel room. For allegedly chopping up his wife, Justin Rey is facing an abandonment of a corpse charge in Jackson County.

Prosecutors argued that what Rey did to his wife's body and what his kids endured -- being around their mother's body in a cooler in a storage unit -- was child endangerment.

During closing arguments, Rey's attorney said he thinks he's a questionable parent and mentally ill. But he argued none of that is criminal, and the children were never in danger.

A Johnson County jury began deliberating Rey's fate Wednesday afternoon. It's not clear at this time if the jury will reach a verdict by the end of the night or if they will reconvene Thursday morning.
