KS - Serial rapist targeting Kansas college campuses starting in Oct 2000

  • #81
Okay, how about an unscrupulous locksmith/employee?

Are apartments typically re-keyed when new tenants move in? Or, if someone manages to acquire a key to an apartment could that person just wait until a female moved into that unit?

I suppose this could be an HVAC contractor, painter, carpet installer, plumber....

How many of those apartments have balconies?
Reminded of a different case/ perp in Toronto, who was dubbed The Balcony rapist because he would watch women first, then later if they had a balcony would climb it and enter the apartment. He was armed, masked and would attack sleeping women, asking them ordinary questions. fwiw.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Callow
Paul Douglas Callow is a Canadian serial rapist who was convicted of having raped several women in the Toronto area in the mid-1980s. Because of his method of attack—entering his victims' homes through balconies off the ground—and the fact that his identity was unknown, he was called the Balcony Rapist by the popular media

After stalking his victims, Callow climbed onto their second- or third-story balconies and entered through broken windows or doors
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/anger-of-the-balcony-rapist/article680326/
He married, but, jobless, he took to entering apartments through balconies, rummaging through drawers, shoeboxes and closets for money or jewellery. It was in the closets, he said, that he noticed an absence of men's clothing, and noted where women lived alone.

When Mr. Callow spiralled into feelings of inadequacy and anger - sparked in part by alcohol and shame that his wife, a nurse, was the breadwinner - he would drink, he said, and cast about for a way to feel powerful and in control. That's when he would remember where the women lived.

"The emotions stewed. They built like a pressure cooker. And I was ready to blow," he said.

He said he agreed with a 1997 court judgment that said Toronto Police were negligent in failing to warn citizens in the area about him. If the public had been warned, he would have attempted earlier to flee to Vancouver with his then-girlfriend and his ex-wife, he said.

"I was ready to take off as soon as I saw the posters that Jane Doe put up," he said. "It would have been for my own good to try and get away and hopefully not be caught."

But police caught him before he could run back to North Vancouver, where, he said, authorities were less likely to find him. His girlfriend and ex-wife had no idea he was the balcony rapist until he was arrested, Mr. Callow said.

[h=1]KU students on edge after attempted sexual assault on campus[/h]
Alyssa Donovan Aug 21, 2017

Before starting class Monday, students received an alert about an attempted sexual assault on campus.

It happened around 4 a.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Naismith Drive, parking lot 90.
Students who live in nearby dorms said they are concerned about their safety.

University police said a woman was walking in lot 90 early Sunday morning when she was grabbed and pinned down by a man she had never met.

The woman was able to fight him off and he ran away.

“Research tells us that students are at the greatest risk in the first 6 weeks,” said Rose-Mockry. “Students are new to campus, they don’t know their way around.”

Police said they do not believe this attack is related to a serial rapist that has targeted the University of Kansas and Kansas State University for nearly 20 years.

If you have any information on the suspect you are asked to contact crime stoppers or campus police

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – It’s been a month since Riley County Police Department and Lawrence Police Department held a joint press conference to address a string of rapes in Manhattan and Lawrence.

Tips are still coming in to the department. As of Tuesday, 30 tips have been received since the conference, all of which are being investigated.
Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers at 785-539-7777 or toll-free at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Text tips are also accepted by sending a text to “CRIMES” (274637) and starting your message with “TIP353.”
Being open in conversations about sexual assault is the best way to get someone the help they need. But the first priority is the person’s safety. WASAC also helps with the aftermath, like sustained injuries, unexpected pregnancy and STDs.

WASAC aims to help victims in all stages, even those looking back at the trauma, as some of the earlier victims of the Kansas college rapist may be experiencing.

The Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center crisis line is 316-263-3002.

Just curious....Wonder if these days were after midnight and recorded as such or were the actual daylight into midnight ex....Sunday...was it Sunday night at 4am (which is technical) or Saturday night after midnight "which really isn't saturday " any longer.
rbbm.
Thinking now, that the crime is considered to have occurred ( due to the surveillance of intended victim) on the Saturday night for example, as opposed to the assault itself, occurring technically early Sunday morning. imo.

[h=1]Day of Week: Surveil/Attack Pattern[/h] The perpetrator appears to conduct surveillance prior to his assaults. Taking into consideration the time of day of almost all assaults (i.e., very early morning), it presumes the assault-related behaviors likely started in the evening leading up to the crime. This is referred to as the “surveil/attack” pattern. For example, if a sexual assault occurred Sunday morning at 0200, it is likely the perpetrator began engaging in “pre-assault” behaviors (e.g., surveilling the victim’s residence to establish she was home alone) late Saturday night. By examining the behavior in this manner, a different pattern emerges from that obtained by simply tallying days of the week.

Over the course of 15 years and across 14 assaults, the perpetrator never engaged in the surveil/attack pattern in either Lawrence or Manhattan on a Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Assaults occurred most often on Sunday night/Monday morning (four incidents). In Lawrence, specifically, no assaults occurred from Wednesday nights to Friday mornings or on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings.
This pattern needs to be interpreted with a caveat in mind, however. Given the low frequency of assaults (one to three per year) over a prolonged period (15 years) it is difficult to assign significant meaning to these patterns. Nonetheless, it provides a comparison point when examining other potentially related cases.

Assuming he is not single, I wonder if he could be married to someone who works nights, such as a nurse. OR he works nights/early mornings and the spouse is unaware of his work schedule. The break between 2008 and 2015 is interesting. Unless there were unreported rapes or he moved out of the area and is doing this somewhere else.

At this point, I would be concerned this is something similar to the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker. That is, has this guy moved somewhere else and is now murdering his victims?

I didn't find the original post, sorry:

BBM

Many churches have services on Wednesday evening and on Sunday morning. Is the perpetrator in church then???

I wonder if he got married between 2008 and 2015? If he's around 34 now like police have said that would have been a pretty likely age to get married and he may have cooled off for a few years on the rapes after getting married.

Maybe he had a baby during those quiet years, keeping him busy and tired at nighttime? imo.

There is some reason for the specific pattern of No Wednesday and No Sunday. There is some reason for the years gap. There is some reason he can enter apartments unnoticed.

Jethro Gibbs is right, there is no such thing as coincidence.

What are the reasons???

No Wednesday/Sunday may indicate his days off were Thursdays & Mondays.

What type of jobs have split days off like that?

Richard Grissom was painting apartments and had master keys. That's how he got in and abducted the 3 women he was convicted of murdering.

So, there's apartment maintenance people, contractors such as exterminators, repairmen, cleaning crew, just off the top of my head.

I was thinking maybe he'd been incarcerated from 2008-2015, but if he'd been incarcerated that long, it seems likely they'd have his DNA on file.

He may have lived elsewhere and been raping women there, but the rape kit backlog is so huge his DNA just hasn't been identified yet?

Wednesdays and Sundays are also church day. Could the gap be the guy was on a mission trip? Probably not, but that is all I got!

The rape kit backlog across the country and also many agencies are not entering crimes into VICAP, the national database of crimes are two reasons he could have been committing crimes elsewhere and LE has not made the connection.

I was also thinking truck driver driviing in/out of there...perhaps route changed during that long period or a DUI kept him from driving? It was definitely someone who seemed particular about not repeating months too much (days yes, months no). My limited truck driving experience which may be refuted is arriving somewhere for a Monday load and turning around during the week for a Thursday/Friday delivery in another spot. If he was solo driver (he would be allowed 10 hrs a day to drive so mathematics can be done for coast-coast driving (is Kansas a mid-point?) What I would believe if this is a truck driver is that it was not limited to state of Kansas which thankfully has not led to any murders there.

Only my limited opinion which I am not even sure about lol!!

I did not know that. My father was born and raised on a farm in Kinsley. Many wonderful childhood memories exploring that farm and riding on combines!

My ex-husband's mom and dad grew up in Kinsley and Belpre!

There's a park in Kinsley with a sign mentioning the halfway point.
