Found Safe KY - Charlee Campbell, 2, *autistic* & Pitbull Terrier Named Penny, Bullitt County, 7 Jun 2018

I can't believe this little doll and her dog have not been found yet. They didn't both vanish into thin air. I'm sure the dog is protecting Charlee, but I can't imagine how far they could have wandered.

I would love nothing more than for this pit bull Penny to stay with Charlee until she is found. Pit bulls have such a bad reputation that it scares me thinking of it being alone with this child.

However, I pray that Penny is an exceptional dog and will guard and protect Charlee. Perhaps Charlee will not be scared tonight since Penny is with her. Xoxo

Pit bulls are usually very loyal to their owners, including children in the family. If she was with some stray pit bull, I would be more worried, but since it's her family's dog, I think the dog will protect her.

True. Except for circumstances where pit bulls are mistreated by their owners, trained as fighter dogs, or are underfed. I’m hoping that’s not the case here. It seems strange to me she hasn’t been found, if the dog is really with her. It would be more understandable without the dog. Especially if they are searching with bloodhounds.

I agree. Why haven't the bloodhounds not picked up on the scent of Penny? This case is very near to me in proximity and I have so many questions too. I have a pitbull that I love dearly, but I would never have more than one. The majority of maul attacks with this breed usually involve more than one. Almost like a frenzy. I'm sure the way they are raised is more of a factor too.

Can I link her mom's Facebook?

Can I link her mom's Facebook?

And the grandmother's and Charlee's father's? I don't think so since there are no POI's and I haven't found any reference on MSM :(

My thoughts exactly. I can’t help but be a little suspicious. Those bloodhounds have an excellent sense of smell. They should be able to pick up the pitbull’s scent. She couldn’t have gotten so far on her own that they wouldn’t pick it up. But I have been wrong a time or two. I just hope she’s alive and that they’ll find her that way. Poor kid.

The words grandfather and grandmother conjure up older white haired people. It's quite possible they are in their 40s and young themselves.

Maybe they should be shouting for Penny, too.
Thank you! - We are “grandparents “ with custody of our 2 year old grandson (he will be 3 next month) people never assume we are his grandparents always his parents.

I wonder if this is grandparents with custody of this child. It’s becoming sadly all to common these days. I’m hearing that’s the case but I’m looking for confirmation from the correct source. For now I’ll say imo that’s possible. I also have to give Grandma a pass on sleeping till 10. If In fact this child is autistic. My now preteen is n/v autistic. She regressed quickly within weeks of turning 3 and she like many kids with autism didn’t sleep regularly at all. She would nap 15 , 20 Mins every 4 or 5 DAYS. This went on for 18 months until we found a dr who actually helped her. She isn’t able still to sleep her brain can’t not shut down. She has to be medicated still to this day! So if this child is like most autistic children then it’s possible the child napped and Grandma was so exhausted she slept while she had the chance. This was time in life was pure HELL , there’s no functioning no normal when you never sleep.

My child also Eloped we had bolts and chains but she still got out. Caught her later using a broom handle to undo those locks. It took ONE time for that to happen though and we put more locks up alarms didn’t work for us. Then I also as extra precaution when she did start sleeping at night it wasn’t always all night. So I started sleeping with her and put locks on the inside of her room to lock us both in. In case I didn’t feel her leave the bed I knew the locks would detain her if not stop her.
In this case though I can see where a mistake was made. If gpa left while gma was asleep , there wasn’t anyone to lock chain locks or latches from the inside and they obviously didn’t use the key bolt locks or she couldn’t of escaped. It’s very possible this is the first time she’s eloped. I won’t judge on the sleeping late if autism is a factor. I know 2 year olds don’t sleep that late typical, but we still use a crib and a sleep sack for our 2 year old. He’s not autistic but the trama from my daughter escaping made me unable to sleep at night once we got him. Worrying he would do the same. So at least I can sleep knowing he’s contained in the crib. Along with the million locks I still need him safe in his bed.

But autism child missing I instantly fear bodies of water. I also worry that she was in clothing not suitable for the outside weather. But I. Don’t know how the temps are there. Then suspending searches for the night have me in total tears though

As far as the status of her mom and dad, we don't know...

That's what I wondered when I first heard about this. My mom said something about a missing kid, so I found this thread. She's been out of town all week, so I guess she must've seen it on the news. When she said how young she was, a custody dispute was the first thing that popped into my head.

I can't imagine how a little kid, especially one that may be autistic, would be able to get very far in the terrain of the area. Especially with a pit bull tagging along. Whether she's non-verbal or not, the dog would more than likely bark if someone (i.e. search parties) came anywhere near them.

Does anyone know anything about her parents? Other than her living with her grandparents?

At least there was this, at the bottom: "One crew will remain in the woods overnight with thermal cameras in hopes of finding her." I would be out searching ALL NITE LONG if needed, if that were my child/grand child. JMO
Heck yeah If my dad loses on of his coonhounds he's in the woods all night.Looking for a sweet little girl wouldn't be a problem.

I can bet there will be those few that will be searching all night.

They still have a special team searching with infrared cameras. It's not totally called off. They don't want people out that could set off the cameras. They want to only detect her and the dog.

It is a bit strange to me that both dogs didn't leave the property.

We had a case like this in Australia only a few months ago where a 3 year old wandered off with an old blue heeler cattle dog. She was missing overnight, and mid morning of the next day, the dog heard the searchers and came out and led them to her. She was still on her own farm, but about 3 miles away and had climbed a heavily wooded high hill.

Ummm....signs of autism? Sleeping till 10.00am with a 2 year old? Going radio silent now

This makes absolutely no sense to me. Whether she was autistic or not, how do you leave a child unattended that long while she’s under your care? I’ll also keep the rest of my thoughts to myself. Praying for her safe return.

I know she was AT Grandparents but have we seen it said she LIVED there? Perhaps she was just visiting? We don't know that she was intentionally left unattended. Maybe Grandpa forgot to wake up Grandma or Grandma accidentally dozed off.

We have seen cases where toddlers have walked miles and miles further than expected.

Autism would not inhibit her walking at all. She very likely is just as energetic as one would expect a toddler to be. She just might not react as quickly to hunger, fatigue, pain, or have as strong of a self preservation instinct.

I have 2 dogs but only one would follow my toddler away. Dogs have different personalities so that doesn't mean anything.

When my older girls were younger we had a couple of very close calls. They literally owe their lives to a Beagle that weighed less than they did. She once grabbed onto my daughters outfit to pull her out of danger. Hopefully Penny will too.

We have had some very happy outcomes with toddlers and dogs. I hope this is another one to add to the list. Charlee is the same age as my little guy.

I agree. The door was left wide open and one dog stays?
Are both dogs pitbulls?
I'm worried for this lil girl. I'm also saddened that my cynical mind wanders.

Dogs have excellent hearing. Surely the dog would have heard the searchers who were calling and shouting today. The searchers would have been listening for the dog to bark. And the bloodhounds should have been able to pick up the trail of the dog. So puzzling.
