1 dead, 9 injured in Kentucky school shooting
Associated Press

Benton, Ky. – A person opened fire inside a rural Kentucky high school Tuesday morning, killing one and injuring nine others. Police led a suspect away in handcuffs and said there is no reason to suspect anyone else in the nation’s first fatal school shooting of 2018.

Hundreds of students ran for their lives out of Marshall County High School, jumping into cars and running down a highway, some not stopping until they reached a McDonald’s restaurant more than a mile away.

“They was running and crying and screaming,” said Mitchell Garland, who provided shelter to between 50 and 100 students inside his nearby business. “They was just kids running down the highway. They were trying to get out of there.” ...

Kentucky school shooting: 1 dead after gunfire erupts at Marshall County High School
by Ali Gostanian and Corky Siemaszko

One person was dead and multiple others were wounded Tuesday when gunfire erupted at a Kentucky high school, prompting panicked students to run for their lives.

Marshall County High School in Benton was on lockdown and a suspect was in custody as paramedics tended to the injured and wounded, state police reported.

Meanwhile, teachers and counselors tried to calm terrified students as parents and relatives raced to the scene to collect the kids, who described the chaos in the classrooms when the bullets started flying.

"They were busting down the gates and fences just to get out," Shea Thompson, whose teenage siblings were inside the school when the shooting started, told NBC News...

They are now asking witnesses or anyone with info to contact police and not to talk with media.

When they can release additional information, they will. They don't want to compromise investigation.

Good God! This is awful news!

I graduated from this high school just a few years ago. Other than the Heath high school shooting that happened 20 years ago, things like this don't happen. Marshall county is a quiet place for the most part.

I will say it doesn't surprise me that the handgun was brought into the school so easily, as when I attended there were no security measures to check for such things. It's also a farming/rural community so access to guns is not out of the ordinary.

What world do we live in when this type of training of our babies is even necessary?
God be with them.

God be with them.

My nephew had "emergency" training in 1st grade which was training in case of an active shooter.

To think I was scared of tornado training as a kid in school: Go into the hall and sit facing the wall with your head down, in neat rows....pretty much the opposite of active shooter training, I would guess.

.

A world where guns are legal, ubiquitous, and not properly regulated.

I am wondering if the 2 dead are included in that 19 injured stat. The way he rattled things off was a bit confusing.

I think it's 19 total injured. And of that 19, 2 died. So that leave 17 others injured.

He said 5 of the injuries were not gunshot wounds. So that leaves 12 living gunshot wound victims.

Am I doing the math right here?

That is what I got out of the presser. 2 deceased 17 injured (12 shot and 5 injured some other way)

A 15-year-old student opened fire with a handgun inside his rural Kentucky high school Tuesday, killing two classmates, injuring 17 others and sending hundreds fleeing for safety.

Two 15-year-olds were killed: A girl died at the scene, and a boy died later at a hospital, the governor said, adding that all of the victims are believed to be students. He said 15 of those injured suffered bullet wounds. Five were flown about 120 miles (193 kilometers) to Nashville, Tennessee's Vanderbilt University Medical Center, spokeswoman Tavia Smith said.
