Kyle Clifford: Wanted in connection with triple murder in Bushey, 3 women murdered in home, 9th July 2024 *arrest*

Pleading not guilty to rape while accepting the presence of his DNA is a defence of consensual sex by default, I imagine. The prosecution must prove by circumstantial evidence (Louise being restrained and kept alive for over an hour), and implausibility scientifically, that he raped her.
Isn't the defence that his DNA was still present from a consensual act a week or two before? or did I misunderstand.
That's why I said he was taking the proverbial.

Yes, I believe so. But I'm not sure if he can claim that timing without giving evidence.

Alleged rape sits within 'extreme violence' against Hunt family

Prosecutor Alison Morgan is delivering her closing speech to the jury.

She tells the jury they "have had to listen to some very traumatic details" to understand the events on 9 July last year, what Kyle Clifford did and why.

She says the allegation of rape sits within acts of "extreme violence" perpetrated against the Hunt family.

But she tells the jury to judge the evidence clinically and dispassionately to reach a verdict on whether Clifford is guilty of rape.

Ms Morgan says a "cool, calm, view of the evidence" will convince them "beyond any conceivable doubt" that the answer must be yes.

Clifford claims the forensic evidence is explained by a consensual sexual encounter 16 days before the murders and expects his barrister to ask why he would deny the charge when he has admitted other serious offences.

But the prosecutor says the submissions will be made on behalf of a man who has chosen not to give evidence or an account of what happened himself.

She is going through the questions she would've asked him, including: "What did you do to Louise Hunt for the hour and a half before you murdered her?"

Ms Morgan gives five key reasons why they should find Clifford guilty - the implausibility of sex taking place on 23 June, the planned attack which must have included rape, what happened inside the address, the forensic evidence and the evidence from a scientist.

'Overlap between violence and sexual thoughts' in attack planning

Prosecutor Alison Morgan tells jurors Kyle Clifford's attack was motivated by "anger and spite" at feeling rejected by Louise Hunt, who he had been deceiving with relationships with other women.

She broke up with him 13 days before the murders.

"If he wanted Louise, he would have her, rape her and murder her and members of her family," says Ms Morgan.

She highlights him buying duct tape as indicating he was planning an act involving her restraint.

"If he could not have her, no one else was going to, and he was going to take her family down with her," the prosecutor says.

She says his planning involved "sexual violence as a means of acting out in spite in a final act before Louise's death".

Ms Morgan says there was an "overlap between violence and sexual thoughts", demonstrated by him searching for a crossbow, before looking at <por...>

This was the "marrying up of thoughts of extreme violence with sexual desire and fulfilment," she says.

Ms Morgan says Clifford "brutally murdered" Louise's mother Carol within two minutes of blagging his way inside the home, then laid in wait for an hour "to do something altogether different".

Louise was "rapidly detained and silenced," says the prosecutor, asking why Clifford needed to restrain her, and why he held her for an hour and a half before killing her.

She dismisses Clifford's explanation of the scientific evidence as "completely untenable".

Yeh the way the evidence reads is that he murdered carol and then waited for louise to enter the building, presumably this was done in an effort to stifle any noise from louise which is evil.

I doubt the defence speech will take long. I can see the jury returning a verdict today. It's not a difficult one imo.

It bothers me that he is allowed to not attend.

He's not done himself any favours by that.
But he won't care. He must know there's no chance of acquittal. He's just done this to cause more trouble and grief, and above all to control. His decision to plead not guilty has controlled everyone present in the court, and everyone who has worked behind the scenes to stage this trial.

Can't imagine a 'darker narrative' than described in this case

Defence barrister Phil Bradley KC begins his closing speech by asking the jury: "Where to start?"

"I doubt that any of us can imagine a darker narrative than described by the evidence in this case," he says.

Mr Bradley says Kyle Clifford's guilty pleas to the murders of Carol Hunt and her daughters Louise and Hannah "prove he was the sole driver of that narrative".

"He and he alone was responsible for the needless deaths of those three women," he says.

But "in the throes of that darkness", he urges jurors to "judge him fairly".

Jury urged 'not to throw the kitchen sink' despite 'horrible background'

Phil Bradley KC says Kyle Clifford was "not researching sexual violence, sadomasochism or anything like that".

He tells the jury that his search for a Wandsworth prison officer having sex with an inmate - at around the same time he was looking at crossbows - was a "notorious incident", which "no doubt piqued the interest of many".

Mr Bradley says that against the "horrible background of this case care has to be taken not to throw the kitchen sink at this".

He accepts the attack was "brutally awful from start to finish" but the suggestion he was lying in wait to "sexually attack" her falls wide of the mark.

Kyle Clifford's case is that he last had sex with Louise Hunt on the day they returned from a friend's wedding, which had previously been described as the "catalyst" to their break-up.

He claims this explains the scientific evidence prosecutors say shows he raped his ex-girlfriend 16 days later on 9 July last year.

Concluding his speech, Mr Bradley says: "Despite the awful background to this case on a fair assessment there is doubt."

Kyle Clifford found guilty of rape

Kyle Clifford, 26, has been found guilty of raping his ex-girlfriend Louise Hunt during the triple murder of her, her mother and her sister.

The former soldier previously admitted murdering BBC racing commentator John Hunt's wife Carol Hunt, 61, and their daughters Louise, 25, and Hannah, 28.

He also pleaded guilty to false imprisonment of Louise, who was tied and gagged with duct tape, and possession of the crossbow used to kill her and her sister, and the 10-inch butcher's knife he stabbed to death their mother with.

Prosecutors said he raped Louise in an "act of spite" during the attack in the Hunt family home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on 9 July last year after she broke up with him 13 days earlier.

Clifford, who refused to attend the trial at Cambridge Crown Court, claimed DNA evidence found on her body was from a consensual sexual encounter 16 days before the attack.

But he has been found guilty by a jury after the court heard his explanation was "completely untenable".

His trial was held at Cambridge Crown Court as one of the few in the country with wheelchair access, but he refused to attend.

Pictures of the crossbow Kyle Clifford used to kill his ex-girlfriend Louise Hunt and her sister Hannah Hunt, have been released by police.

His trial heard he bought the weapon, a pack of 6 crossbow bolts and a rope cocking device, online for home delivery on 3 July for around £350.

The 10-inch butcher's knife Clifford used to kill BBC racing commentator John Hunt's wife Carol Hunt has never been found.

But police have released a picture of the packaging for the £89 blade, which was found in the bin outside his home.

The jury took less than one hour to unanimously find Clifford guilty of raping his ex-partner on the same day he killed her and two members of her family with a crossbow and a knife.

The trial was told he planned a "murderous" act and an "act of sexual violence" at the Hunts' family home.

That has to be one of the quickest verdicts ever. But it wouldn't have taken me even a minute to decide that.

I'm glad he's got the rape conviction too.

Am sure it only took them seconds as well. They probably just had a cuppa and waited a polite length of time, to indicate they had discussed the charge.

Becky Watts is the only other case that I remember having a very quick verdict, in a matter of hours.
