For the detectives to name these two individuals as POI's in his disappearance, to me, means it's more than them just finding his wallet on the ground, and trying to steal money. LE wouldn't put their names out there if they didn't have more information, I don't believe. Praying for Mark and his family!
The Lower Garden District has seen a spike in crime of late, I'm afraid. The Warehouse District is still relatively safe, whatever "safe" means around here.
FWIW, NYE was very cold with lots of rain practically the entire night.

It just occurred to me, if they were using his wallet before he was last seen then he doesn't have any ID on him. I've heard the cops have checked the Morgue for John Does but have they checked all the hospitals? What about the ones outside of the city or Parish?
It sure is. My heart is bleeding for his poor father and the rest of the family. All of the cases we deal with here are heartbreaking, but the local ones sometimes touch me much more deeply. This is one of them. Sending prayers and hope. This is so scary.
Excellent description of the waterfront in that area. You'd have to be clear headed and work at getting to the water. Like you said, the wharves, warehouses, railroad tracks, wall, etc., present formidable obstacles. And besides, bodies in the river in the center of the city always show up before long. So, no. Personally, I don't believe this young man ended up in the river. The river is the Missisippi RIver. Its not something you can just go search. It is huge and fast moving with ,multiple currents. It is also not something that he would have just happened upon, when leaving Republic.
The river is mostly blocked with warehouses, a cruise ship terminal, a big huge mall, a sea wall (if the river were to flood, there is a concrete wall that would try to keep the water out of the city, as we are below sea level), streetcar tracks and train tracks. This is mostly what it looks like.

I can't find a picture of the outside, but it is a club that is in a strip that has lots of bars and lots of traffic. It is a popular club, surrounded by other popular clubs. It is not at all isolated. Someone reported that he was heading towards Canal, if you see that on the map.
I hope all my links go through! lol
You're right about the freeze being the following weekend. But you know how NOLA is when it comes to rain. I live only a few blocks from the river, but further downstream. We had heavy rain off and on all day and night. At midnight, it was teeming.New Years eve wasn't bad though. I live in the French Quarter and I rode my bike home on the 30th from work (About a mile and a half) and then I went out and partied on the 31st. Neither of those nights were bad enough to warrent anything more than a long-sleeved shirt. On NYE I was wearing short-shorts and I was fine. The freeze didn't happen until the 6th.

That area is always fairly busy. But I can imagine that weekend was especially busy! They had the show he went to, plus the brass band across the street, plus it was Friday night! On top of all that, the dick Clark new years celebration was simulcast from new Orleans this year. And there were a college bowl team game here that weekend. It was a very busy weekend. It is highly likely he could go in another bar. We always do! Wander out one and into the next.Thank you mpnola for this description. Makes it so much easier to picture things.
So you say it was very busy that night, lots of people, traffic, many bars open, events happening. Could he have gone into another bar, listened to a band, or joined another group of people, and somehow it went south from there.
I wonder if all the employees in other bars on this strip, including bouncers, security personnel etc, have been shown his description/photo, or been asked to check their surveillance footage, if they have any.
