my gosh! what kind of picture is that??? (of the perp)

also my thoughts on current second degree charges are due to the condition of the body and will be upgraded after the investigation is completed if warranted...moo of course

Perhaps they are not sure of cause of death yet and need to see if it is a cause that only could be first-degree murder? Like a gunshot, or stabbing? Where I live, in NM, they often start with what is called an "open" count of murder and then gt more specific later.

Looks like a WINNER to me!!

I'm so glad Nicole finally decided to put her foot down and put an end to the violent situation she was in. Just so incredibly sad that it had to end like this. If I was trying to end a violent relationship, I would definitely bring in backup and this is exactly why!! I just wish Nicole had another chance & it hurts to think of all that she went through in the last minutes of her life.

I hope they catch this monster... SOON!

Looks like he's showing signs (in this undated photo) of some wear and tear. Wonder if this mugshot was taken following a previous DV arrest?

The photo was taken after he was involved in a fight back in February I believe.

I agree about the charges. They might not know enough about cause and manner of death yet to charge him with first degree. I hope they find him soon.

:waitasec:

I am puzzled by the "Second Degree Murder" charge ... why not "First Degree" ?

I guess we will have to wait to hear from the St. Tammny D.A.'s office ...

:moo:

Maybe they think that it wasn't premeditated? But, perhaps occurred as a crime of passion during an argument. It's a shame that the punishment may result in his being paroled at some point in the future.

I would think that murder during the commission of a crime (DV) would qualify - but maybe not.

:seeya: Hi nola !

BBM: That's what I was thinking : possibility of getting out on parole ...

JMO ... but he needs to be locked up for life ...

Hey SwampMama,
That is great news! At least he isn't putting his children and Nicole's family through the ordeal of a manhunt.
Now, we gotta wonder what he's gonna say happened...hummm.

He turned himself in in Calcasieu Parish today. We don't have counties, we have parishes. So glad he is off the streets.

The other unrelated death of a local woman that was also an possible victim of domestic violence is now a homicide case. She was strangled, and had blunt force trauma. They have a person interest but have nor released the name. It is the same parish as Nicole and that sheriff's office seems to keep some details quiet while doing investigations.

They say that Calvin was the one to first report her missing, so he has made prior statements to the police so at least they have that info already documented, kinda hard for him to squirm his way out of it now.

The sheriffs office had reported that Nicole and Calvin had fought that night she went missing because she tried to kick him out. They were estranged at some point and she allowed him to move back in because she felt bad for him and also thought he could help with the kids.

Sounds like he was the one who offered some of the details, when she was first missing. he was the first to report that she didn't go to work and had been cooperating with the investigation. This explains why they held off on some of the details, so as not to spook him and make him run. It's better to play along with the suspected perp so you can get his statements and input and use them against him later.

They feel his vehicle may hold evidence as he probably transported her body in it, or could have killed her in it. It doesn't sound there was signs of a struggle or blood at her house but he could have just choked her or something and not have blood all over. They have his vehicle in custody already and I think they had it before he turned himself in.

He had been arrested for domestic violence three times while they had lived in Texas. It sounds like all of her four children were fathered by him. So they have lost their mother and really never had a father since his presence in their home only caused chaos and violence.

The cause of death has not been determined because of the advanced state of decomposition. The Louisiana heat can do that quickly. There were no gunshot wounds. Possibly they fought, she yelled at him and he silenced her forever. Although they have no exact cause of death yet, just the fact that a healthy young woman was found dead and abandoned along the highway indicates it was a homicide, along with the details of her disappearance and the history of the couple.

Sorry for so many multiple post. I have been watching different local stations and getting the facts and compiling and posting them.

Well, he did the right thing and turned himself in. Hoping he also gives a full confession and works out a plea deal. Nicole's Mother and family is going to have enough on their plate helping the children deal with this. They don't need to suffer through a trial.

I'm also hoping the family will be offered help. Is there some sort of victim liaison who will help them navigate programs which will help the children, i.e., free counseling, etc.? The Sheriff mentioned CPS, but I'm hoping there is an agency with a little more TLC and heart.

Does Calvin have family that are involved in the kids lives?

New article at nola dot com with added information on the long history of abuse in the couple's relationship.

Years of domestic strife preceded slaying...
By Ramon Antonio Vargas, The Times-Picayune
Published: Tuesday, May 08, 2012, 7:50 PM Updated: Tuesday, May 08, 2012, 8:56 PM

On June 13, 2002, the couple argued about Calvin going swimming with his ex-girlfriend, the protection petition recounts. Calvin Jefferson grabbed his wife by the throat; began choking and hitting her; and also struck their nine-day-old, newborn daughter while trying to hit his wife, the petition alleges.
The story behind the lovely mug shot. Nicole posted his bond.

Despite the divorce, investigators say Nicole Jefferson eventually allowed her ex-husband to move into her place to help with raising their two daughters, ages 9 and 6, and two sons, 5 and 3.

By February, the Sheriff's Office alleged, Calvin Jefferson had once again run afoul of the law and threatened to hurt Nicole Jefferson.

It's the same tragic story told over and over again. Abuse escalates over time. Family urges victim to get rid of the abuser. Victim won't or can't say no. Death ensues. Children become orphans. I'm left sitting here in tears and angry with myself because I don't know the answer to the big question: What could have been done to save Nicole?

St. Tammany Parish does have good services for children and families. A couple of possible resources:

Safe Harbor, a program for victims of domestic violence with counseling service for children.

Hope House (Children's Advocacy Center)

More information for St. Tammany residents in a DV situation who might be reading this thread:

St. Tammany Parish sheriff's deputies drove Calvin Jefferson back to St. Tammany Parish from Lake Charles this afternoon and booked him on a second-degree murder warrant. Jefferson, 41, is accused of slaying Nicole Veade Jefferson, the mother of his four children, who are all younger than the age of 9.
