LA - Quawan Charles, 15, found deceased in field, left home with unk. woman, Loreauville 2 Nov 2020

from the link above
"As soon as Charles was found,"We immediately began treating this as a homicide investigation," and deputies have since been "actively and aggressively" collecting evidence, the sheriff stated."

immediately?
that's not what was implied in the beginning
what was it that LE would immediately feel it was a homicide?

The way I understand it, though some might disagree, is all LE death investigations are started as possible murder then possible suicide and then possible accidental/natural death. The cops want to get the bad guys, if there are any, that's what most of them got into LE for in the first place.

Yes. You only get one chance to do it right, so it’s standard to treat deaths like this as a homicide until you find evidence to the contrary.

ETA: Good gravy!!! :eek::mad:
I am astounded! Irrespective of how he died, a 15 year old boy is dead. Now let me say this - generally 15 year old boys don’t just die , so therefore it can be concluded that his death is suspicious. So why in the hell are the PD not investigating his death ?
Above is in respect to a 15 year old boy who is maybe out for a walk and drops down dead - this would still need investigating because it’s suspicious, it’s outside of the norm! Then we add into the whole scenario the fact that he was taken , without permission, by his white friend and his friends white mother . And then he is reported missing and this is not, it would appear , taken seriously enough by LE who pacified the family by saying that he’s probably at a game ...
And then after 2/3 days of intense searching, he is found in a sugarcane field with injuries to his face and deceased. The family are told he drowned ....
And the police assistant chief has the gall to say that the death of this young man , is not being investigated!!!
It defies belief.
Where is his commitment to keeping his community safe and following through on justice ?
This boys death MUST BE INVESTIGATED! I am so angry right now. No wonder that people are losing faith in their local PD’s when they issue a press release such as this which is basically putting up two fingers to the community it serves. There are no excuses! ALL MOO

That’s what is supposed to happen however the assistant chief has clearly decided otherwise !!

I think someone is responsible for his dead in one way or another. Maybe he wasn't murdered, but and adult picked him up from his house and his parents did not give permission for this child to be taken. This 15-year-old boy was under the care of an adult, who willingly took him out of his house so, what happened? Someone is responsible, even it if was an accident. He either died alone, or someone left him there to die or already dead.

Baldwin isn’t investigating his death because it occurred in another jurisdiction. Iberia is the one conducting a death investigation, as that’s where his body was found.

That’s why Baldwin’s focus is merely on how he came to be missing.

The Iberia Parish Sheriff's Department has been investigating the circumstances surrounding Quawan's death, and have been since the night the body was found. They went to the 17 year old friends house and questioned them on the same day, then several hours later found the body. They stated that they collected physical evidence and have conducted multiple interviews. They can't share details with the family or the public because it is an ongoing investigation.

The Baldwin Police Dept are investigating the missing persons case. It was an attorney and an activist who claimed the police were not investigating the case as a murder. They insisted that the coroner was mistaken about the cause of death, and that it looked to them to be a lynching that was racially motivated.

I'm still very curious about the large sum of money found with the body. If this was a murder, why would they leave the cash behind?

I feel like a lot will be cleared up once the toxicology results come back.
Impairment is the only (non foul play) situation I can think of as to why a 15 year old would fall into a pond (or a puddle? a small river in this field? has it ever been released?) and subsequently drown. Not unusual for teens to drown in large bodies of water, but this did not seem like one. And in my unprofessional opinion, his face looks like the right half was not submerged.

We don't know that he was picked up at his house, but a mutual friend of theirs said Quawan was in the car with them. The door to his bedroom was locked, so he might have gone out the window and met them somewhere near his house. If the friend was one of the wrong crowd he had been involved with, he probably didn't want his parents to know who he was with.

Either way, there seem to be witnesses who may know what happened. The friends parents claim he left their house and didn't say where he was going.

Quawan was seen on surveillance camera alone in the area he was later found in, so the question is, what happened to him after he left the friends house?

Did these so called friends feed him magic mushrooms? Did he then try to make his way home and collapsed with face down in a puddle of water? This does not let the friends off. Whoever supplied him with the mushrooms if this happend
Would be culpable, MOO

Marg, each State is different, but they are continuously trying to change the laws.

Example in PP there's DDPD where a friend, the guy up the block, your Uncle procured the drug. You may have paid, but you die thry're charged. They aren't charging the dealer, but often the same person you did drugs with. They are trying to up the charges as well, but ya produced a death?

No idea what the classification of psilocybin is in Louisianna. I figure like this.....if your kids have a party, and someone sneaks in vodka, and a kid dies or kills someone driving that's on the parent!

Thank you MassGuy I realise now that there are two jurisdictions hence the assistant chiefs report

Thank you Ms Betsy I didn’t realise this when I typed my post
What large sums of cash ? X

Quawan's father said that the police told him he was found with a large amount of cash. He said it was not uncommon for Quawan to carry two or three hundred dollars around with him, because he was frugal and saved his allowance. He recently bought a computer.

Quawan also bought his beloved pitbull, My Baby, from the family of the 17 year old a few years ago.

I don't know if the money plays a role or not. The family also were allegedly "tripping on mushrooms" in the car, according to the teenager who told his mother, so if true, that may also be a factor.

IMO

Much much much more to this story then has yet to be revealed. RIP Quawan. May your parents get Truth and Justice for you soon.
I'm from Loreauville, and this is super fishy to me. My Nephew is their age , and he and his friends are ALWAYS together when they hang out. And going play in the water is the last thing those Loreauville boys do at that age. If he died while in Loreauville with his friend, wouldn't his friend Gavin have been with him if he supposedly drowned? But they're saying all three of the Irvins don't know what happened to Quawan. I hope the truth comes out for this poor families sake.

This happened in my area. It is a rural area that has miles and miles of sugarcane farmland and the Teche Bayou. The police and sheriff’ departments are small and poorly funded.
Unfortunately, a photo of the deceased child has been posted on social media. The is a group of activists that have been sharing the photo and IMO relishing in the publicity. Unity 7 is one of the groups that is bringing attention to issues with it’s dealing with blacks.
I'm from Loreauville area too. I hope they get to the bottom of it.

Whats strange is I was told the Irvins lived in the trailer park near the old Loreauville elementary school, and that's on the other side of town from the road he was found near. Ed Broussard road is off of main street. That would've been a far walk if he was tripping or high on anything.
