And both rented vehicles from a private rideshare rental company that is not extremely well known imo/ime. I wasn’t even familiar with the concept, much less the company and from reading here, most others weren’t either.

RSBM.

Curious, I just now Googled 'car rental houston'. At the bottom of the first page there is a link to Turo (though it's not in the list of 8-10 results for car rental companies on that first page).

So as I was reading about where the perpetrator may have been radicalized -- on-line and how if so or in-person and where if so -- it got me thinking.

Where did the ISIS flag come from?

Was it home-made? Because I imagine you can't go on Amazon and buy one. I'm probably now on a FBI watch list for Googling 'ISIS flag' and going to the Shopping list but as I expected, nothing comes up.

Brian posted these on X two hours ago. Not seeing anything being placed in cooler, but nonetheless what an evil monster that lived among us. Coward.

CNN just aired a heartbreaking virtual interview with the parents of deceased victim, Matthew Tenedorio. It felt very intrusive to watch, so soon after Matthew’s death. His father is still visibly overcome with grief. They haven’t even seen their son’s body yet.
That was so uncomfortable. Intrusive is the perfect word.
I assumed the victims would be young. So heartbreaking to see all their pictures.

I looked too. Ahh the lists Websleuthers must be on! I saw on Reddit that some US Soldiers bring them home, as well as flags from other terrorist groups. I was in Syria in 2008 and there were a bunch of Hamas flags and memorabilia for sale. I know it's legal to own them of course, because of the First Amendment, just like a Nazi flag, (which we have sadly seen plenty flying lately in several parades in US cities). My guess is the dark web? But I have no idea. Moo

Bomb-making materials linked to the New Year's Day attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans were recovered by FBI agents and local law enforcement Thursday at the suspect's residence in Houston, Texas, sources confirmed to ABC News.

The items found were also referred to as "precursor chemicals" by agents in the field, sources said.

The items were found when agents executed a search warrant at the last known residence for suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbar in the small community of Greenspoint, in north Houston

lawsuits coming.

Absolutely! They made that comment themselves, it’s out there now. They will come up with an excuse though.

They didn’t think it was important to have this in place before NYE and the Sugar Bowl. That in itself is evidence of failure to protect the public.

ETA:
I’m including the comment that said they were waiting for the new barriers.

''KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel spoke with a man who works on the property who said Jabbar handed over his keys and said he was moving to New Orleans on Monday, just two days before the terrorist attack in New Orleans that killed 15 people on New Years Day.

The worker described Jabbars’ demeanor as sad. He said Jabbar lived at the home alone, was nice and typically kept to himself. The only strange interaction he had was when Jabbar asked him where all of the security cameras were on the property and where they were pointed two days before he moved out.''

FBI investigators say they believe Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old from Texas, is responsible for the New Orleans attack that killed at least 14 people on New Year's Day. CBS News Confirmed executive editor Rhona Tarrant reports on the newest details. Plus, CBS News correspondent Jason Allen reports from the suspect's Houston neighborhood.

Does asking about the cameras imply that he thought he was going to get by with it?

According to this article, Jabbar was making $125,000 a year, yet he claimed he couldn’t pay his bills and was thousands of dollars in debt.
He lived in a shoddy house in a rundown neighborhood so he wasn’t spending money there.
So what was he spending his money on?
Lawyers, court costs, child support, alimony, it can add up.
I think it makes more sense than them going into a traditional car rental company, with cameras and staff they'd have to interact with. Sounds like this app is hands off, with a code to access the car. Like an air bnb vs a traditional hotel or motel.

MOO
Just out of curiosity would an insurance company pay for damages to this vehicle because it was used in the commission of a crime?

I am so confused. We are being directed to pay attention to a blue cooler and yet there appears to be something that looks like one in The Tesla explosion video from the press conference. Screenshot from video in the article. 6 seconds into the video

Video Source ABCNEWS from Official Press conference.

Get by with it? The inquiry was about the location of security cameras on the property he'd lived at for two years -- not any property located in NO.

From the quoted MSM link:

The worker described Jabbars’ demeanor as sad. He said Jabbar lived at the home alone, was nice and typically kept to himself. The only strange interaction he had was when Jabbar asked him where all of the security cameras were on the property and where they were pointed two days before he moved out.

  • Shamsud-Din Jabbar was Beaumont native with 3 ex-wives and 3 children, records show
  • ''Jabbar had three ex-wives and three children, two girls and a boy.
  • He married his first wife in 2008 in Jefferson County. They had two daughters who are now 20 and 15. We don't know exactly when they divorced but records show the ex-wife filed for child support in 2012.
  • Jabbar's second marriage was in 2013. They had no children and divorced in 2016 in Dekalb County, Georgia.
  • Jabbar married his third wife in 2017 in Fort Bend County and they had a son. According to divorce court records, a judge granted a temporary restraining order at her request.
In 2022, she accused Jabbar of excessive cash withdrawals, gifts to paramours and unreasonable spending.
Investigators said Jabbar made reference to his divorce in videos and said he planned to gather his family for a “celebration” before killing them but changed his mind and decided to join ISIS instead.
He posted five videos on Facebook as he drove from Houston to New Orleans on New Year's Eve and said he joined ISIS last summer.''

We've been digging into the personal life of the Houston man behind the New Orleans terror attack that left 14 dead and over 30 injured.

Add another to the growing list today...
....
The Payette Police Department responded to a call on Jan. 1, at roughly 6 a.m., about a suspicious person trying to light something on fire in the 600 block of North 8th Street, Chief of Police Gary Marshall said.
.....
A news release from Payette Police said officers arrived in the area and found fresh footprints in the snow. The tracks led to a train car, where police found an undetonated Improvised Explosive Device (I.E.D.).
His fresh footprints in the snow also led all the way back to the camp trailer he lived in...a rocket scientist in his brain without having a brain....What a complete idiot...thank goodness!

Bbm.
Don't worry ... I'm sure you'll be fine. :)
Maybe Shamsud purchased it on Ebay, pre-owned ?
Since he was so concerned about his financial burdens.

I've googled plenty of sketchy-sounding questions relating to cases I've followed here !
One was "Is a body still intact after being in a river for fourteen days ?"

That was when that college student wandered away from the bar and was located in a river days later, I seriously thought they might not be able to recognize him.
He was ID'd by his watch, shirt, and I'd imagine his dna/dental records :

Per FBI -- "brown dress shoes."

He aged quite a bit since 2020.
Guessing that nursing rage or bitterness (3 failed marriages and having to pay alimony/child support); and planning a terror attack on people who have never harmed you -- does take a toll on oneself ?
Imo.
Omo.

RSBM.
So I poked around a turo group to ask about how insurance works.
  • For the car owner there is $750,000 of liability insurance through Traveler's Insurance provided by Turo. Obviously this would exceed that. There is also insurance for vehicle replacement, at varying levels of deductible depending on how much of the rental proceeds you give to Turo. I assume that if the renter is at fault, Turo's insurance would go after the renter for that money, which leads to...
  • For the renter there are a few different "protection plans" that can be selected, adding to the cost of the rental. They offer different levels of coverage for the car if there's an accident or other damage, with different deductibles and exclusions.
It's not clear if acts of terrorism are covered. Sometimes insurance will specifically exclude acts of terrorism. Someone On The Internet claimed to have skimmed the agreement and didn't see anything about terrorism, but said they couldn't 100% guarantee it's not in there.
