I guess it doesn't matter where he got the cigarettes or what kind they were. If he was selling them to underage kids at the high schools, it's illegal no matter what.

Respectfully I think it does matter. Especially if he was robbing to get them; holding up stores or B&E maybe. Also the fact that reserve cigarettes are for the natives. Is he a native or could he have been buying them illegally on the reserve? Regardless it appears he had trouble obeying laws according to his past record. Of course we know this doesn't make him any more or less guilty than DM of murder or other criminal activities. Some people are just lucky enough to evade the law.
Speaking of native, I wonder if DM had an Indian status card. Being as his grandfather Carl was a direct descendant of Chief Joseph Brant, I wonder. Was DM involved in the purchase of native cigarettes for resale possibly? This could lead to big dollars. Maybe both DM and MS were into selling contraband tobacco. Just a thought and MOO.
A recently released study for cigarette manufacturers found about 30 per cent of tobacco purchased in Canada is bought illegally. In Quebec and Ontario, where most of the problem lies, the rates hover around 40 per cent and 50 per cent, respectively. The problem is not yet improving, and an estimated 13 billion illegal cigarettes were bought in 2008, up from 10 billion a year earlier.
