I wish this could be an opportunity to understand the difference between dependence and addiction. You can become dependent on a med even if you take it exactly as prescribed. Even certain anti-depressants cause withdrawal if they are stopped suddenly.

I don't get the sense Prince was abusing the opiates - just dependent on them and in larger and larger doses as his body developed a tolerance.

MzOpinion8d, you are correct.
Addiction and physical dependence are not the same but are related.
After taking a drug for a while, you may develop a tolerance to it and have withdrawals symptoms if you stop using it. This is physical dependence.
If you abuse the drug and you know what you are doing is harmful and you know it can and will mess up your life anyway, you are addicted.

You also have Psychological dependence, which I find to be most intolerable because of cravings and this can be nonstop and go on for a long time. This is called
PAWS: Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. Paws is the second stage of withdrawals and occurs because of brain chemistry and is emotional.

Our minds can be a terrible place sometimes.
I have to take very strong pain meds for the rest of my life, so I have experiences I wish I never had.

I have read some really terrible things about Prince elsewhere and I find this horrible. Being addicted to narcotic pain meds does not a bad person make.
Addiction can cause a person to do bad things though.
Compassion and understanding goes a long way, just like education.

]It was reported earlier that he had an appointment with a holistic doctor in the morning that he missed. Was this supposed the be the doctor that "they claim" was supposed to give him the suboxone... A "holistic" doctor?

Also says he was dropped off the night before by a "staff member"...and he had gone to the hospital on Wednesday.

Wednesday April 20
A law enforcement source tells KSTP that Prince was brought to a Twin Cities hospital Wednesday and was seen by a doctor. He was then brought back to Paisley Park.

At 8 p.m., Prince was dropped off at his home in the Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen by a staff member. The Carver County Sheriff says this is the last time Prince was seen alive.

Thursday April 21
Prince missed an early morning holistic medicine appointment. He could not be reached, and staff went to check on him.

bbm: Holistic would be an alternative - no way they would be administering suboxone... imo...

I absolutely despair to think or speculate this - but he may have said f--- it. ???

I think you could be right about the other.

I dont even think that just any doctor can write a script for Suboxone ... Unless its changed in the last year or two .
My friends hubs had to go to a certain doctor who had some special training or some such .

Today was the first day that I have even considered that perhaps he did say that. I don't know what to think.

All I know is he was a man in pain....and maybe, just maybe the case will be helpful in opening up the conversation about pain management, addiction, solutions....I just don't know.

I took it for pain for 7 years, it was great while it lasted but has a ceiling effect meaning after 7 years it just does not work anymore. The drug was invented 45 years ago in Europe by 2 chemists who wanted to make a long acting pain med that did not have as bad of side effects and they did it. All they made before this was mustard and shoe polish LOL I kid you not this is true. I dunno why but America was way behind in this area of medicine. It is used in patch form over there and works wonders for opiate naive people. They just approved a low dose patch here in the US but that was not until 2011 and its 2400 bucks a month ! Actually I took the one called subutex it does not have the narcan in it since I was a pain paitent. A pain doc will know about this and any doc can write it IF they are prescribing for pain only, otherwise they have to take a 8 hour course to get on the list. Even ER's still are clueless when you mention this drug, that is a shame! Every ER should carry it like Narcan

What I am concerned about Prince was his bloodwork, it showed a low level of red blood cells, AIDS drugs can cause this but so can other things like cancer,, He was so cool and so fine Hubba Hubba I am sorry he is gone.. RIP Prince I loved you..

I was curious and googled. There are a lot of things that can cause a low red blood cell count. Here are a couple of good links. The first, from the Mayo Clinic site, lists the possible causes and symptoms. The second is a comprehensive and well-researched article discussing vegans and vegetarians. With a well-balanced diet, a vegan such as Prince is not at increased risk of anemia.

Oops...I didn't hear that he'd switched, so I'm glad the article included both. :) The last meal his chef described sounded vegan/plant based to me so maybe he varied his meals. I was interested that neither diet would cause anemia, as long as it was done correctly. I googled it because I thought it might be a cause of a low red blood cell count.
