Firefighters have been called to 17 addresses in Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover for reports of suspected gas fires and explosions, State Police said Thursday.

Evacuations were under way in Andover and North Andover, State Police said in official tweets. State and local police were assisting.

Troopers are on scene assisting with scene security and traffic control, State Police said.

mergency crews are responding to reports of multiple gas-related explosions and fires in three communities in the Merrimack Valley region of Massachusetts on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagle-Tribune newspaper reports that at least one home has been destroyed and several others have caught fire amid a problem with a gas line that feeds homes in Andover, North Andover and Lawrence.

Massachusetts State Police said they have confirmed responses to more than 20 different addresses in the three communities for fires, explosions or investigations. They said troopers are assisting with scene security and traffic control after "multiple suspected gas explosions and structure fires."

There is no word yet on whether anyone has been injured.

It would have to be. But on the map the houses are scattered. Imo not a single line problem. Hmmm

oh wow. I think everyone in those areas that haven't seen fires should shut off their gas to their homes until they figure out what is causing it. Even still, maybe evacuate. Someone not far from where I lived took out his house and half his block trying to get his house to burn down to collect insurance. Killed the 2nd grade teacher next door. He had no idea the damage would cause an explosion and spread beyond his house. So, if the neighbor's house explodes, you might not want to be home when it does.

And at the same time, there are mass evacuations down the coast due to hurricane Florence. This is just crazy!

I hope there are no fatalities and no serious injuries.
