After initially hoping to avoid a hospital evaluation, Lowy on Thursday sent Chism to the Worcester Recovery Center and put the trial on hold. It's not known at this point when the judge will be able to resume the trial, a decision that will depend on how long the Department of Mental Health takes to examine Chism.
It would then be up to the judge to make a formal finding as to whether Chism is competent to stand trial.

Prosecutors, however, are skeptical of Chism's behavior, and have not only requested surveillance video from the holding cells at the Ruane Judicial Center, but wanted their own expert to evaluate whether Chism is competent or simply faking it to delay his trial.

On Thursday, shortly after Lowy ordered Chism sent to Worcester, the prosecution asked to have its own expert, Newton psychiatrist Dr. Martin Kelly, evaluate the teen while he also undergoes the independent evaluation in Worcester.

But in a ruling Friday afternoon, Lowy turned down the prosecution's request.

It just makes me sick that he is playing the court like a fiddle. That evil kid is smart.

Maybe ... just maybe, being in the courtroom during jury selection, with dozens of people in a very grave and sad mood, with stern looks, parents, including his own mom, crying, etc, introduced a little bit of reality in his sick mind. The reality of what he's done, the reality of the impact it had on so many others, the reality of his deeds and character being broadcasted all over the news soon, the reality of his own future looking very grim. And he couldn't take it anymore, it would be too terrible to acknowledge, he doesn't have the courage to face it, so he had some kind of bread down.

I hope it is like that. I hope he is tormented and scared and horrified, only then is there a chance that he will start on a path that one day might lead him to ask for forgiveness.

Of course, he could also be faking everything and feel nothing. In that case he's just a psychopath and will never change.

He's a fake. He knew exactly what he did and likely relives it every day in his own evil mind. "I hate you all" he wrote in a note next to her after he posed her. THAT was his reality.

His only regret is that they took away his trophies.

MOO

That was a GREAT post, so true.

Has the jury been picked for this trial?
When is it supposed to actually occur?

Thanks!

Spellbound, they were in the middle of jury selection when he had his little melt down and needed to be sent for evaluation so defense can't later claim he wasn't fit for trial. He has now been declared fit and hopefully the proceedings will soon resume, but we are all kind of expecting more drama from the accused.

They had been picking a jury when the killer decided play crazy. They had picked a few people and they are going to resume picking from that same pool of people. They just had them on hold.

Thanks Colette. that's kind of what I thought. Any idea when they will resume jury selection?

Potential jurors will return on Monday, per tweet by Julie Manga is, court journalist covering Chism case. Getting close to starting trial now.

Jury Selection resumed Monday and continues today. Opening statements are scheduled to begin Friday.

From your article, 8 jurors have been selected. Six potential jurors return today for defense peremptory charges, 65 new juror candidates will also be seen. It is hoped to have 18 jurors seated, with 6 being alternates. The judge is hoping the trial gets going by Friday or Monday. It may run into Christmas, or close to it.

Thanks for the link, jcct!
