Attleboro Police Seek Missing 73-Year-Old Woman, Man Who May Be Exploiting Her

Attleboro police are asking the public for help to find a 73-year-old woman reported missing by an assisted living facility. They say she was last seen with a man who may be financially exploiting her.

Dorothy Lucas, a resident at a nursing home on George Street in Attleboro, reportedly suffers from dementia and is an insulin-dependent diabetic with limited mobility. She was wearing a red or orange jacket and may not have her required medication.

Police said she checked herself out of the facility at 1:40 p.m. Saturday and left with 51-year-old Mark Chicoine, of Attleboro. He is believed to have befriended her while visiting someone else at the nursing home.

An hour after leaving the facility, they were seen together at a Santander Bank in town and Lucas withdrew an undisclosed amount of money. They may have been in the North Kingston, Rhode Island area on Sunday morning.

“At this point, the Attleboro Police Department has concerns about Lucas’ well-being and access to medication which she needs,” police said in a statement. “Further, the unusual withdrawal of money gives investigators concerns about the potential of Lucas being financially exploited.”

Chicoine is believed to be operating a white Jeep Patriot SUV with Massachusetts registration 573-WT7. Anyone with information should call police at 508-222-1212.

Having a Dad that was conned out of thousands by scammers before I took his checkbook away at age 97 when he was pretty much broke, I think there should be a special place in hell for those that prey on the elderly.

I hope this creep just backs away and lets her go. If she willingly took the cash out of her bank for their little roadtrip, he probably can't be charged with anything.

I don't want him to feel cornered. I want him to go on his merry, stinky way, and allow her to go back to her family.

These low life scammers make me sick. My 88 yr old mother has been scammed a few times as well. My brother saved her one time, from one of those phone scammers, pretending to be a grandchild in trouble. She was about to send 7k, in cash, to a PO Box number, thinking her grandson needed her help. My brother helps with her bill paying, and saw she took all that cash out of her account and went over to her assisted living apartment, and she was packaging the money to be sent.

Same thing happened to my grandmother, someone called pretending to be one of my cousins whom had been arrested and needed 6k. Luckily his mom walked in while my grandma was on the phone and she told my grandmother that's impossible he's at my house eating lunch.
People seriously suck. My Aunt has taken over her finances because everyone has been borrowing money since she has gotten dementia, sadly we tell her no more loaning everyone and their families your money, she gets angry that she's an adult and she will do as she pleases with her money.
Also my great mother's name was Dorothy Lucas, I hope they find her safe and put this 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 away.

This is as bad as people who hurt children and it is happening more and more often. These innocent people don't understand even what the internet is in some cases (I know my grandparents don't) ....only a sociopath can do this type of thing and I wish there were tougher laws to stop it.

I am sorry for all of you who had this happen with family members, I know it has happened to many people I know. They work hard all their life for a lil nest egg and are left with nothing...despicable

My opinion of course :)

YES. the guy called her and gave her my son's name, said 'grandma, I need your help, don't tell my wife or my mom, I just need to get bailed out. Then I can get a lawyer and prove it was all a mistake, blah blah blah....[ and he said he was hit in the jaw by the cops and so he sounds funny...]

My brother went to Mom's , when he saw thew large cash withdrawal. He heard her story and then he called me, and asked where my son was.

Ummm, at work..I think. why?

brother says, call him, then call me back... lol

Of course my son was at work and knew nothing about this vile scam. She almost sent 7k in cash to a po box in Florida. and we live in California.

The scammer knew my mom's name, her grandson's name, and he had a believable story---my' 'son' was at a wedding in Orlando, got busted for drunk driving, she cannot tell anyone or he will get fired...please help and send cash for bail and an attorney....

My boy did send his grandma a beautiful thank you card and said he really appreciated that she was trying to help him---but he promised her he would never call and ask her to do something like that in secret...

We had that same scam going here in Ont. Canada. Friends Mother was called (the grandmother) their Son (the grandson) was away on a hunting trip. It was also stopped before the 5 grand was sent. I hope Dorothy is found alive. I am worried. Especially if her account/s have been drained. Poor Lady. Her loved one's must be beyond frantic.

Just an FYI but I do know in my area in order to take somebody out of assisted living person must be on a list that has been approved by immediate Family. Until anyone is on the list, including immediate Family they are not to leave with that person. If not a rule where you live then let assisted living know you will bring a list in yourself of approved people.

100% same story my grandmother got, even the sounding funny because was hit by officers and also had no sleep :mad::mad:.
Just imagine how many times this scam has worked :mad:
We are in Arizona and they were needing the money sent to New York. I told my grandmother to call the police but she didn't want to.

Regarding her mobility; she is in a wheelchair. :(

Attleboro Police on Twitter
Lucas is wheel chair bound with very little mobility. She is diabetic, dependent on insulin and left the nursing home with no medication. She also suffers from dementia symptoms. She was last seen in a 2011 white Jeep Patriot Massachusetts registration 573WT7.

Given she is Insulin dependant her days/hours are numbered. Not to mention getting proper nutrition and on time. I'll bet this guy wasn't even aware or I guess didn't care if he indeed knew of her health issues. Please find them soon!!!

But, now this...

Police issue Silver Alert for missing 73-year-old Attleboro woman with dementia symptoms
Lucas was initially reported as having been in a wheelchair; however, detectives confirmed she is not restricted to a wheelchair and is able to walk.

Woman Missing From Attleboro Nursing Home: Police
[...]

"We have no reason to believe that he is a danger to her at this point," said Attleboro Police Lt. Brian Kelley. "We have no reason to believe that she is being held against her will."

[...]

"We have no reason to believe that she is not actively engaged in some sort of friendship with him," said Kelley.

[...]

"I don't think she's in danger," said CP who lives across the street from Chicoine. "I don't believe so, you know, knowing him."

My son took my mom to police station and they took the phone message machine because the jerks left her a lot of detailed messages.

The cops were very familiar with this scam. Sadly, the phone number was a burner cell paid in cash. They were having the Orlando police checking into the POBox, but I don't know if that ever panned out.

My mom can come and go from her assisted living centre. But she is not in the section with 24 hr care. My mom is pretty independent and doesn't need someone to help her with basic needs. She has her own little apartment within the centre, and just goes down to the group area for dinner.

So no one would need to sign her in and out.

That's how a lot of these low life operate, by becoming 'friends' with the elderly victim.

Not sure why LE doesn't feel she is in danger. If true as reported she is insulin dependant and has none with her she is in grave danger.

Agree. My girlfriend's Mom is in assisted living. Not nursing home, retirement home as she is mobile and can feed herself. Family comes in to shower and take care of her laundry and any and all needs. Her dementia is peaking and she would not have a clue as to what to do if someone took her out unapproved. If loved one has dementia I would recommend a list. Glad your Mom is doing well yet has supports nearby if she ever needed them.
