EAST FALMOUTH — On the dry surface of a cranberry bog, laborers made a most unexpected discovery yesterday.

"They told me they found some bones and a skull out there," said Brian Handy, who has owned the Backus River Bogs since 1979 and had dispatched workers this weekend to install an irrigation system.

The skeletal remains are definitely human, investigators have determined, but now it's up to the state Medical Examiner's Office to figure out whose bones the workers found. That determination could take a week or more, Falmouth police said last night.

While the remains appear to have been in the bog for some time, police are looking at more recent missing person cases, Clarkson said last night. There is no reason to believe the remains are connected to any high-profile missing person cases in town, he said.....

Arguably the most high-profile missing person case in Falmouth is the disappearance of Wanda Medeiros Reine in 1971......
