''Nuno Loureiro, a professor of nuclear science and engineering and of physics at MIT, has died. He was 47.

A lauded theoretical physicist and fusion scientist, and director of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, Loureiro joined MIT’s faculty in 2016. His research addressed complex problems lurking at the center of fusion vacuum chambers and at the edges of the universe.''

''Loureiro’s research earned him many prominent awards throughout his prolific career, including the National Science Foundation Career Award and the American Physical Society Thomas H. Stix Award for Outstanding Early Career Contributions to Plasma Physics Research. He was also an APS fellow. Earlier this year, he earned the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.''

Very upsetting. While any motive is awful to consider, I am hoping it is a personal matter. It's been an absolutely awful year for science and scientists in USA and I'm hoping this wasn't targeted at him because of his work.

local news says he was a father - i haven’t read a lot more about his personal life in msm so far

Loureiro was a parent in the Public Schools of Brookline, according to superintendent Bella Wong, who sent an email to families in the district on Tuesday afternoon.

This is a very safe area. A condo in this building went for 1.4m in 2018 2175sf 3 bd/2 bath. I have no idea which unit he and his family occupied or whetherr they rented or owned or what. Boston metro is expensive.

I am wondering about access to the building. It's a multi family condo/apt building. I don't see a buzzer system outside the door on the exterior so I am thinking there is another interior door before entry with the email boxes and a buzzer system.
Did someone ring up the victims unit,a person known or unknown and the victim, he then either buzzed them in and went to meet them, or he went out of his unit to greet them, or find out who they were. And bingo. Maybe he left his door open in his unit and that was his baby crying. I don't know.
Whoever was the shooter was was not concerned with noise as many heard the gun shot - so no silencer.

I have not read anything anywhere about camera's. The time of the shooting seems odd - 830 ish at nght and at his house. Dense neighborhood. I would think easier in a parking lot somewhere or a more isolated less populated area.

Kind of just thinking out loud on paper. Seems more like a disgruntled spur of the moment liquid courage moment type killer vs a hit.

The holidays really seem to unnerve people

From these 2 comments in the same article, it's not clear exactly where Nuno was shot. Is it possible that it was in the 'lobby' of the building? or was it just inside the entrance of his specific apartment?

Neighbors in the Boston-area community where MIT professor Nuno Louriero was shot to death inside his apartment building earlier this week said they were stunned by the mysterious killing.

Loureiro was gunned down at the entrance to his Brookline apartment on Monday night, the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning.

He apparently owned his unit.

Loureiro is listed as the owner of a unit in the apartment building at 9 Gibbs St., according to county records.

And, just like others, I haven't seen any mention of his family. I don't know if he lived with his kids.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered 47-year-old Nuno F.G. Loureiro, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the building’s foyer." bbm

I've seen foyer several times including from an interview with the first floor neighbor. Hard to say this early as there are always conflicting reports.
We will have to wait to see as it evolves
It feels personal to me.

''Nuno Loureiro is married with kids. Sally Kornbluth, president of MIT, noted “In the face of this shocking loss, our hearts go out to his wife and their family and to his many devoted students, friends and colleagues,” in the statement released after his death.

However, Loureiro's wife's name remains unknown for now. ABC-affiliate WCVB meanwhile reported neighbors saying that Loureiro lived in the Brookline home with his wife and children. A person who lived in the neighborhood for 40 years, described the Loureiro family to CBS News saying “He had a young family, they went to school here.”

Not much else is known about the slain professor's children either, except that they attended school locally. Eurydice Hirsey, meanwhile, is a family friend, the publication further noted. “It's a family that is feeling such raw horror. I am sure terror and what do you do with something that is indescribable,” he said.

Loureiro was reportedly born in Portugal to a Sephardic Jewish family in 1977.''
