Karen Read has been charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter and leaving the scene of a collision in the January 2022 death of her off-duty Boston Police Officer boyfriend John O'Keefe outside a Canton, Mass., home.

She's pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Leading up to his death, the couple of two years reportedly spent the night drinking and bar hopping with friends before Read, 43, dropped O'Keefe, 46, off at the home of a fellow off-duty police officer for an after-party, PEOPLE previously reported.

Prosecutors say as O'Keefe exited the vehicle, Read allegedly proceeded to make a three-point turn during a winter storm, striking her boyfriend in the process before driving off.

After O'Keefe failed to return home hours later, Read allegedly went looking for him, before finding his body in a snowbank outside the home where she allegedly left him.

I wonder what it will mean now to the prosecution's ability to use this company any further now that they are deemed not experts by them as of today, Burgess and Welcher. (?) spelling IMO
I am going to have to watch it all again on 2x speed, but I gather that a lot of his conclustions or information to reach conclusions, was just pulled from other experts reports, and again, his report was used for other reports... so it's like a circle of information with Whiffen, Welcher, Burgess, even info from Tully.

It seems like Alessi has started to go there.. and will continue tomorrow... he was getting into that before the day ended. I don't know Alessi's past court cases, but he is methodical, and I think he has pieced together the timeline of how and why Burgess did this May 8th report.

all JMO

Watching the NBC10 YouTube that LYK was on earlier and they showed some pictures of John that I don’t think I’ve seen before. Really made me teary, he was so handsome and seemingly a good guy. I’m glad I got reminded of that, I’ll admit to unfortunately not thinking about HIM nearly enough throughout these trial days.

He deserves so much more than this farcical and often undignified circus. So many people, from those framing Karen to the CW, should be so ashamed, but we know they aren’t! All IMO, thank you for listening, Crime Family, I have no one else interested, sigh….🥹

Same. I’m really curious what the other, PhD level expert (Welcher) from Aperture is now going to say.

This whole CW case is fraught with ignominy and the further this goes on, the more the “experts” who equivocate to try and salvage it look like frauds by association imo.

Apparently Welcher based his report on the findings of Shanon with one N. Shanon is discredited and unbelievable at this point. Will Welcher throw Shanon under the bus and admit he can’t be certain of the accuracy or intent of Shanon’s report (who probably no longer works for Aperture) or will he add himself to the body count?

Do we know if the CW has an accident reconstructionist coming in to testify?
I still don't see how he was hit by a car, it still doesn't make sense to me and the ME's testimony last week didn't help.

If Brennan is thinking of resting in the next few days, what have they "proved beyond a reasonable doubt"?

Nothing. They can't. Even without today's disaster imo.

I think this (BBM) is what this Welcher guy is meant to do?

At this stage, I agree with your overall sentiment wholeheartedly - and I've spent most of my commentary on this retrial just repeating my greatest hits from the first trial. So here's another one:

It wouldn't matter if Karen's defense was that JO'K was killed by aliens or by a time-traveling Genghis Khan using telekinesis, she cannot be found guilty of any of the charges she is on trial for, if the Commonwealth of Massachussets cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that JO'K died because KR struck him with her car.

MOO

All the evidence is a mess. All the witnesses leave you with more questions. Even the alleged experts.
This is wild. The experts are lying about things required to have to even get the job. Jobs they make elementary type mistakes in because they do not have the education needed to be employed in the field.
BYTES bits.
Someone call Chloe or Cora , she needs to explain some things. At least we know she flunked out of school. didnt take her 17 years.

HB is apparently going to call a neurologist but I don't know of an accident reconstructionist. AJ would keep one on the stand the rest of the week if the CW called one. imo

The reconstructionist is Welcher from Aperture who relied on today's witness's work for some or all of his conclusions.

Ought to be mighty interesting.

I'm sure there are some on the jury saying something like this to themselves:

"Of all the the experts in all the towns in all the world, this is the best the state of Massachusetts can get to attempt to prove their case?"

Certainly appears they were hired for their flexibility with the truth as opposed to their expertise.

Good question, when does this become a problem for the courts and the case? Even if it’s permissible why would you want to keep an expert on that is not who they claimed to be.

When KR left today she said that they were ambushed. What did she mean? I’m still catching up on today.

@Tortoise - that was a good post this morning (thread 27) where you referenced 2 video interviews of KR saying such things as I was “looking to find him on the side of the road, I was expecting to find him” and (both quotes are about the 6:30 am trip to Fairview with JM and Kerry) “he’s roughly where I left him”.
Add to that her father’s comment that KR said, “Dad I think I struck something…..I remember backing up and hitting something”
at 1:45 here:
Not to mention the frantic chants of “Did I hit him?”
Why would she say these things? IMO, it’s because she tried to hit him and possibly did graze him on the knee. Why else would she keep talking about hitting him with her car if she really thought he was in the house?
I think parties on each side of the aisle are trying to hide something here. Clearly, IMO, LE was inept at best, and corrupt at worst, but I don’t think she’s 100% clean here.
That being said, there’s no way a jury can find her guilty - reasonable doubt appears in every aspect of this case.
