COPS are hunting a scout leader wanted over the 1998 murder of a Dutch boy once linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Survival expert Jos Brech has been named as prime suspect in the murder of Nicky Verstappen, 11, found dead in a forest one day after he went missing from a youth camp.

Maddie's parents Kate and Gerry believe Ney was seen acting suspiciously near the spot she vanished from in 2007.

How Nicky's death was linked to Maddie's disappearance


The case became linked to Madeleine McCann's vanishing when in 2011 Dutch cops quizzed a German child murderer, Martin Ney, over Nicky's death.



Private detectives employed by Kate and Gerry McCann investigated Ney to find out if he was in Portugal when Maddie disappeared after they noticed a resemblance between him and a photofit of a man seen acting suspiciously hours before Maddie vanished in 2007.



In May 2011, McCann spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Our private investigators became aware of this man a month ago and they will be liaising with the Germany investigators."



Scotland Yard worked with German authorities before interest in Ney was dropped on the belief he only had sexual interest in boys.

Cops have now named Brech as the prime suspect following a DNA breakthrough.

Brech told his family in April that he was going for a walk in the Vosges mountains in France where he owns a cabin. He hasn't been seen since.

Brech was 35 at the time of Nicky's death and was interviewed as a witness when police were undertaking what became one of the most extensive murder investigations in the Netherlands.


They first suspected Brech earlier this year upon noticing his absence from a pool of 16,000 men from the area who had volunteered to hand over DNA samples to clear their names.

"We now have a one-on-one DNA match with the traces found on Verstappen's body," Detective Ferdinand Schellinkhout told a press conference in Maastricht yesterday.

Limburg police chief Ingrid Schaefer-Poels told journalists her force is "convinced that the suspect has gone into hiding."

She asked the public to contact police with any information of his whereabouts.

I am kind of sceptical there are many advantages in not having to make discovery at this stage.

The issue is they don't have the evidence they need. This isn't some kind of tactic to keep things secret.

Why does the luxury of time not confer advantages? The case isn't going to disappear.

We don't know what evidence they have nor what exactly they're looking for.

I think we agree that we believe MM was dead within hours of her abduction and that what happened is too horrific to contemplate .

I'm sure that has been the opinion of every experienced investigator officially involved in the search - i.e. not in a position to speculate publicly and not GA. The stats were ever against her..

They have all officially stuck to the one known fact which is that it is a missing person case.

So why have German LE gone one further and said she's dead? The same requests for info could have been made about CB as a suspect involved in the known fact of her disappearance

The things they've said added to the risks to their global reputaton suggest they have a lot. They just need more or possibly want more.

The interesting thing is, pausing the video at the right time and zooming in, parts of his testimony become visible. And what is readable, shows no sign of a crackhead, how FF described HB. To me it looks, as if he spoke to SY after (!) his release from prison in greece.
