Thanks, I will have a look for the next closest tower. A relevant negative is just as important as a positive. It may very well put him in close proximity if alternative towers are that close. My reading is that the phone was within 1500m of the resort.Info in posts below.
A cell tower usually has multiple antennas, each covering a specific part of the area. Azimuth indicates the compass direction (in degrees) that each antenna is pointing, and determines a phones approximate location within a cell's coverage area.
Yes, this is pretty close - the pinging is continual, to any/every mast that can hear the ping, to ensure a connection can be made when required but is not, as you say, a permanent connection.
Disconnecting/switching off the phone sends an explicit 'I'm turning off' message rather than going offline 'invisibly'.
There are sufficient local masts to have provided phone location, however, it appears that this information is not available so has either been time-expired (depends on local legal requirements) or wasn't collected (unlikely imo)
Interesting comments.

This is RO’B’s phone ping map. When he made calls in Luz, it says 1 deg (2 deg in Portimao). Is that the azimuth?
Presumably that’s what you would expect to see if CB was in/around the resort.
I have found that antenna (h) was built after june 2007, so we have to discard it.
Considering the 19:32 (Vodafone to Vodafone) call on May 3, 2007, the important antennas are now (b), (f), and (g).
(b) VODAFONE. Probably Rua 1º de Maio, 2, Luz, Lagos.
260 meters from 5A.

268-01-24-14424: azimuth 40º.
268-01-24-1709: azimuth 280º.
