According to Wolters, the McCann's received a letter at the end of May informing them that LE was going to announce that they were investigating a murder in relation to Madeleine. Then they were sent another letter after the June 3rd broadcast.
Caso Maddie, il procuratore smentisce i genitori: "Li abbiamo informati che la figlia è morta"
Prosecutor Wolters, did you write to the McCanns or not?
"I personally have not written a single thing: the Federal Police, in coordination with us, and the British police have made contact with the family. But nothing about the content I've read so far: it's just speculation. The truth is that before the broadcast on 3 June we informed the family that we would make a public communication to say that we are investigating for murder and that the child is dead."
So you already informed them that you were investigating for murder before 'Aktenzeichen XY... Ungleoest,' the broadcast that also publicly revealed that there's a new suspect, Christian Brueckner?
"Exact."
So they know there's been a murder investigation for a month. And why did you do that?
"It was a personal, humane decision. We are not obliged to make contact with witnesses - and they are witnesses. But since they're also parents to a missing girl and, in our opinion, dead, we obviously worry about how they are. That's why we wrote a letter before the broadcast: we didn't want to surprise them with the announcement of the murder investigation. After that: it's not that we repeat it in every letter."
I mean, was there another letter? The McCanns claim they have not received any letters.
"Let me point out, meanwhile, that there have never been any phone calls or direct interviews with the McCann family. I even read that we would reveal what evidence we have of the murder thesis: it's all completely wrong and invented. After the broadcast on 3 June, there was a new contact, always in the form of a letter, but I don't even know if it has yet arrived at the McCann family."
And what does this letter say?
"I don't say a word about the content."
