I think they'll be able to get quite a lot of information from it.

The direction it tore in will show how the plane may have landed or why it broke up
The algae levels and/or sun damage could show whether it's been submerged until recently or afloat the whole time
The type of barnacles may reveal which part of the ocean it's been in (depth / location maybe)
The current it came in on can be tracked back.

Etc etc. Of course none of this will yield definitive answers, but a combination of all the different results might just lead to a narrowed search parameter. And I still think more items are likely to wash up.

NBC News ‏@NBCNews 7 min.

JUST IN: ID number confirms plane fragment found on Reunion Island is from a Boeing 777 http://nbcnews.to/1MAif99

I wonder if random items have been washing up for some time and were picked up and discarded, no thought about them being related to the M370

The (weather?) guy on CNN just showed a model of the Indian Ocean gyre. He said the debris could have come from one of three places: Indonesia, Australia, or.....
wait for it......the Maldives.

Which totally goes with the Maldives theory me and a few others have tossed around.

This piece can help confirm that the data has been leading them to the correct conclusion, that the plane went down somewhere in the Indian ocean. I suspect they are probably in the right area, but have only completed about 40% of the search, it's an absolutely massive area and is painstaking work.

The question still is why? The only thing that can help us understand that is the black box. I still lean towards this being a deliberate act, although I wouldn't quite call it terrorism.

Its just "amazing" that all of sudden all these things are popping up ain't it ! My goodness this is all gonna be solved in the next 2 weeks - come on guys!!

The plane simply did not have enough fuel for that theory to be in play.

Yes, that, and there are other islands out there where it could have been beached for a while and then moved again out to sea by a storm and tides...JMO

Its amazing that some people can't accept that they were wrong...

CNN.... reporting that the suitcase found is part of the probe. Hmmm. Maybe a family member could identify it. Wishful thinking....JMO

If the suitcase is from a set and the passenger didn't take the full set with them on the flight, its definitely possible a family member has the matching cases in their possession. The suitcase being an odd brown/red color instead of the usual black/navy/gray most people go with increases the chance of it being identified. I mean, I would definitely remember something that hideous. lol

I really don't care who's right or wrong, I just want it solved. I've seen several theories bounced around on this thread, but That's what it takes to solve any mystery. I'm proud of every single poster who contributed. Now, I'll go back to lurking on this thread. :)

Does anyone know if any of the victims families have sued the Malaysia Airline?

We've been thinking that for the last year or so; then the unopened towelette from Malaysia Air was found on the West side of Australia. I feel they missed so much due to Malaysia not giving the correct info in the beginning.

Unless my research is wrong, the distance from
Kuala Lumpur to the Maldives is shorter than it is to
Perth. So I'm not understanding how it wouldn't be possible. Please correct me/ explain to me if I am wrong.

I don't think so. They are all entitled to some sort of compensation though, I think that process is still ongoing.

I only know of the case below many of the families are refusing compensation as they don't want to believe or accept their relatives are dead.

"The lawsuit filed against Malaysia Airline (MAS) and Putrajaya by two boys whose father was on board Flight MH370 was settled out of court today, their lawyers said.

According to Datuk Dr Arunan Selvaraj, who is representing the two boys in the lawsuit, the decision was made in chambers after judge Datuk Rosnani Saub spoke with the boys’ mother today.

“The matter has been settled; as you’ve read, MH370 had disappeared in a mysterious way but in January the authorities have declared it an accident and also the authorities have assured the next of kin that they would be compensated fairly.

“Our client, having considered her rights and legal position, has decided to accept the court compensation and move on with her life,” he said referring to the teenage boy’s mother.

The court also decided that the plaintiffs will not have the liberty to file fresh action on the same matter, he added.

I really thought CNN was airing old footage because they say its "BREAKING NEWS" that US sources believe someone in the cockpit deliberately sent the plane into the ocean. I think its time to sit them down and have the talk about what breaking news actually means.

Wow

I want that luggage - it survived huge impact forces, floated around an ocean for a year and a half, in saltwater, and the zippers shine brightly, the contents look fine - lets all buy this piece of super luggage!!!

Maked Samsonite look horribel - elephants and all! I have no luggage that looks that good sitting in the closet its insulting....

Obserd IMO

It is sort of unique-looking luggage, but it may just be included in the probe because of it being found at the same time as the flaperon (sp)? (yup, Cariis, lots of new words to struggle with!!!) JMO add That PPRuNe pilots forum is interesting to read. JMO
