Because they can malfunction. They can fail (as can anything) and draw excessive current, they can can transmit incorrect altitude information (happened to me once, although in that case you can turn off the altitude and just send the code).

You have to be able to turn things off. Planes fly with stuff like that disabled.

Thanks for that info Adnoid.

Has anyone seen this? This would make four stolen passports! All their tickets were bought through the same Chinese site.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of two more European passengers on flight MH370, adding to two others using stolen passports in the Malaysia Airlines plane which vanished over the Malaysia-Vietnam maritime border yesterday.

I had seen a report earlier today (unconfirmed) that one of the Russian passports was suspect. Didn't want to post it because I didn't want to start a rumor. WOW, if true.

Wondering if they all went through the same security line, had the same agent checking their passports/etc...?

I'm hesitant to jump on the terrorism bandwagon although I admit it is possible--however usually a terrorist group claims responsibility soon after (am I wrong?).
I travel globally, and often to all continents except Australia, Asia and Antarctica. I like the 777 and feel most comfortable on it. I also, despite travel, have a fear of flying. My friend, a flight attendant, tries to soothe me by telling me that in most cases a person on a doomed flight will quickly brown out then black out and that it is one of the fastest ways to die. This doesn't ease my fear of flying but makes me hopeful that regardless of circumstances, these passengers had little or no time of panic/fear/suffering/pain....

lets hope for answers soon. I enjoy the 777 and hope to not be in so much fear of this plane in the future...

There are two 45 yr old men on the manifest from the Ukraine..... Is it ok to post that?

I've seen speculation this could be an attack related to China's support of the Russian stance on Ukraine, but that doesn't make sense at all with something maybe planned two years ago, to me.

As soon as I heard about the passports, my first instinct was that it was related to China supporting Russia. Hope that I'm wrong and it was mechanical failure or weather.

If you're referring to timing of the passport theft, I doubt the passports were stolen for this particular purpose. jmo

My opinion only, but when I first heard about the passports, I didn't think they had been stolen years ago for this purpose. I thought that perhaps they had been stolen and sold, then kept for just such an occasion. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that a terrorist group would have a library of stolen identities to use when needed.

How often and at what times is the satellite imagery updated?

UPDATE [8.30am]: Bernama reports the Department of Civil Aviation will extend the search and rescue operation to the Straits of Malacca, Malaysian authorities are now awaiting the latest satellite imagery for any signs of wreckage from flight MH370.

Cnn reported that US is sending FBI to help investigate. Why send FBI and not CIA? I thought that the latter handled the international stuff.

As far as I know the CIA doesn't operate openly anywhere.

I can think of a couple of reasons...

FBI has the Explosives Unit - EU - that investigates suspected bombings.
They also have TEDAC - Terrorists Explosive Device Analytical Center.

If terrorism was involved, I would think Malaysia would have been the target much more so than China. There has been a very controversial happening within the government for which many are very upset - having to do with the conviction, then overturned, then reinstated just yesterday of Anwar, a popular opposition party leader in Malaysia. But all in all, terrorism is not very common in Malaysia.

(CNN) -- A delegation of painters and calligraphers, a group of Buddhists returning from a religious gathering in Kuala Lumpur, a three-generation family, nine senior travelers and five toddlers.

Most of the 227 passengers on board missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 were Chinese, according to the airline's flight manifest. The 12 missing crew members on the flight that disappeared Friday were Malaysian.

Other passengers were from India, Indonesia, Australia, the United States, France, New Zealand, Ukraine, Canada, Russia and the Netherlands, the airline said.

The airline's list showed the passengers hailed from 14 countries, but later it was learned that two people named on the manifest -- an Austrian and an Italian -- whose passports had been stolen were not aboard the plane.

On Saturday, Texas-based Freescale Semiconductor confirmed that 20 employees were passengers on Flight 370. Twelve are from Malaysia and eight from China, the company said.

Listened to supposed last few minutes of contact the plane had with control towers from another site. May or may not be valid, but OMG. Even though I cannot understand the language I know there is terror in their voices. Recording is via you tube. I would post link but not sure it is authentic.

It is my understanding the FBI will now be involved due to American citizens being onboard the aircraft, and to investigate the possibility of terrorism. The cause of the crash being undetermined at this point would not warrant the involvement of the CIA which gathers information about foreign governments, corporations, etc in order to provide a national security intelligence assessment to the President, among others.

Air France flight 447 also had no chance for a mayday call before crashing into the ocean, and that wasn't terrorist related.

Everyone, there is a misplaced post referencing CV, who is the little girl who was recovered yesterday after her mother had been murdered by her father, apparently. I've "alerted" on the post, and hope it will be moved shortly.

There have been no persons recovered from the airline crash. I don't know that they've even found the crash site.

I do not believe there was ANY time for them to have contact with the tower.
Unless it was before they lost radar... we have been told all along there was no sign of problems. :twocents:
