Checking in with the family of the name on the passport and finding out he wasn't on the plane.

And that their passports were previously reported as lost or stolen.

Passports were not fake, they were stolen. Apparently at least two people boarded the plane with stolen passports.

Article I posted earlier did say that ID's on 2 separate passengers where fake. I'm assuming photo ID.

I think some media is calling them "fake" because the people who had them weren't the ones whose names were on the passports.

My question is, how would they not detect that a passport is fake when it is checked at the airport, but suddenly can detect that it is fake after when they don't have posession of it?

I don't know but aren't family and friends of the 2 fake people wondering where they are? Eventually they aren't going to show up and someone should report them missing.

This is a terrible tragedy, of course. But can I say that I am learning so much from the expertise of the posters? My daughter is an aviation inspector, and I'm gaining important knowledge here and will finally be able to have an intelligent conversation with her about this.

Thank you all.

I just heard on BBC Radio 4 that Interpol have confirmed both passports were registered on their list as stolen, and so should have been flagged at passport control.

See that's what I thought.

In reference to the stolen passports, Are we to assume that the people that used the passports look like the pictures on the passport or do they do a cut and paste with photos. tia

Hard to tell, however, it has been said that new passports have the photos embedded in them, making it extremely difficult for someone to do the "cut and paste". In any event, one would think the impostors would have to look like the names on the stolen passports. In other words, I cannot envision two Asian or Middle Eastern men with names such as Christian and Luigi.

Thank you everyone for your posts and updates. It is a tragedy I hope they find the plane and recover any remains. I think it is going to take a while to find the wreckage I hope the currents aren't too severe and pushing the wreck all over the sea.

I keep thinking about this magazine article which was pulled from airports in the UK showing how to build a bomb with items bought in the duty free. It obviously not difficult to do. I hope it doesn't turn out to be terrorism.

"Several UK airports have been selling a magazine which contains an article explaining how to build a bomb while you wait for your flight.
According to the feature in Wonderpedia, which was written by Evan Booth, 31, from North Carolina, £120 of items can be bought in duty free after passing security which can be used to make explosives."

my thoughts exactly, wasn't quite sure how to word that- but it's so true, they would have to look convincingly like a first and last name Italian and first and last name Austrian. There were passport holders of multiple nationalities of Asian origin, like one of the New Zealanders and the US children but they had Chinese surnames. I realise it's still possible to be Luigi Maraldi and of another ethnic origin but you would think it would seem odd at passport control

Unbelievable...not that it is possible, but that some magazine would publish it.

It depends. If it is terrorism they wanted to see where the weak spots are in security then, yes, they probably got what they wanted.

If their intent was something else like hijacking then, no, it wasn't a success.

If someone were just testing out security, then that would be a big mistake. I don't think they'll get another shot at flying with stolen passports again because I bet that's about to change worldwide after this.

If it were purposeful, then I think it was either a failed mission, a terrorist attack with the responsible group not coming forward yet, or a professional hit on someone (or a few someones) on that plane. JMO

Otherwise, I can see how one part (like the previously damaged wing or something else) ripping off and causing the whole plane to disintegrate immediately without chance for a radio emergency contact.

I had to fly right after 9/11 - we were living in the Middle East at that time. And I was terrified. I finally got over it (mostly), but living the DC area, I always wonder who is on the plane who may try to pull off another attack. This incident isn't helping any. :o

I can see that happening too, but where is the wreckage and debris? ty

A question just flashed through my mind but figure the odds that it will be original.
First I wondered if airplanes have cameras. Big duh! What good is that when a plane goes down along with all the crew and passengers and everything else on board.

Since there's this stolen passports situation and there's a need to know who used those passports, without pictures from the assigned seats, how will this be possible?
I don't suppose pictures from within the the boarded plane are sent anywhere prior to take off. Is it possible they are?

They'll have to match passports to the surveillance of people who boarded the plane. Please tell me this is possible, is it?

We don't know how carefully security looked at the photos. Apparently the stolen passports were in a database of stolen passports. But yet it doesn't appear that was checked. Maybe security there is lax.

So the question is really, why report a stolen passport when the thief can use it anyways?

With all the technology and where it is today, the thieves should have been caught by Airport Security.

There are probably a lot of reasons why, but why isn't the cockpit self contained having their own bathroom, separate door from the outside, and access to food with no inside access other than cost and space it would take?

Ok, I have backed up and am ready for the fallout! :truce:

No throwing 'maters from me!

Your idea sounds like a great set-up for my Websleuths Home Office!

Are we sure they got on the plane?
