Saturday's Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing was scheduled to take 5 1/2 hours — one of the shorter routes worldwide for the 777. Malaysia Airlines has its 777s configured to seat 282 passengers with business class and coach cabins.
In addition to its ability to fly long distances and hold a large number of passengers, airlines like the 777 because they can fill its long belly with lots of profitable cargo. The jet weighs 316,800 (143 tons) pounds empty but is able to carry another 340,000 (155 tons) pounds of passengers, luggage, cargo and fuel. Less than a third of the space in the belly is taken up by luggage.

I have found this phone thing mystifying from the start. I imagine phone operators have done their utmost to track phones from the start. I know there can be explanations for a phone line ringing even if the phone is deep under the water and broken but I wouldn't think that was common...
According to China.org.cn, 19 families have signed a joint statement saying that their family members' cell phones connected, but the calls hung up. The relatives have asked Malaysia Airlines to reveal any information they might be hiding, seeking an explanation for the eerie phone connections. The relatives have complained that the Malaysina Airlines is not responding as actively as it should.
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/missing-ma...claims-seeing-plane-plunging-into-sea-1439582Even as the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 remains untraced, a man claims to have witnessed the aircraft plunging into the South China Sea.
Alif Fathi Abdul Hadi, 29, from Ketereh, in the Malaysian state of Kelantan, has lodged a report with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) over the claimed sighting of the aircraft as it was going down.
The businessman said he had seen a bright white light, similar to those used by planes during night flights, moving towards the sea at about 01:45am local time on the day the Beijing-bound Boeing 777 vanished.
Does anyone know anything about phones, aren't they able to track the last known location or where the phone was when it was called? I know many were likely switched off from the start of the flight but we know the airline allows texts and calls and you'd think there would be use of social media and texting at least on the ascent
Further confirmation that the oil was not from the plane

Trying [unsuccessfully] to find a direct link to a story, but a UK news ticker says that VN Express is reporting that "a commercial plane from out of Hong Kong has reported seeing several large pieces of debris 60km southeast of Vung Tau, a coastal city in Vietnam." If anyone can find a direct link to the original story, please post it!
