1 (Mid-Air Explosion): How does that account for the continued “pings” coming hours after the plane had left Malaysia?

7 (Structural failure): How does that account for erratic flight pattern seen on radar, and also pings continuing for hours after plane left radar coverage?

Wow. Just WOW. For anyone who likes good graphics, check out that link. My mind is kind of blown at what the search teams are dealing with here. I knew it was deep, but this really helps put it into perspective. Very cool.

That is terrifying. Very cool as well, but mostly terrifying.

That is a hard question because we do not know exactly how they fill up the tanks. Does the pilot asks for the equivalent to 7 hours of fuel, in gallons, or does he ask to fill it to the 7 hour mark in gallons? There would always be a certain amount of reserve fuel in the tank from the last flight, I would think. jmo

Lamb I recall hearing the talking heads say in the last day or so that they calculate what they need for their exact route, plus an extra 30 minutes or so for emergencies. (I would think they take into account whatever is left in the tank and adjust accordingly).

I am sure one of our pilots can clarify though :)

Just need a few more words tacked on the end Elle Elle - (beyond their destination of Beijing). KL to Beijing is a 6+hrs flight.

So a flight of 6+hrs plus 1hr extra fuel takes us to the 7+ hours flying time estimate that 9M-MRO likely stayed in the air.

Aeronautical laws are somewhat different and enforced differently depending on location.

I am speaking from a North American perspective.

Generally if an alternate airport is listed on the Flight Plan:

In addition to the 45 minute reserve at cruise speed, an amount necessary to arrive at the alternate is needed along with 30 minutes holding time to allow for a slot to be made available.

Off topic but I had no idea Cuvier’s beaked whales went that low down, that will be the deepest ever for any marine mammal, mind boggling.

Yes, I knew that but just did not know who much extra they allow in addition to what might already be in the fuel tank from the last flight. If I were flying I would prefer the 2 hours of extra fuel, thank you. LOL

Yes. That was said.
But then a few days ago...CNN mentioned that there may have been something suspicious found but they never reported on it again.

The CNN headline read that the FBI found something CURIOUS and then I never heard anything reported about it...

Yes, this is beyond precedent...but that is why it is so difficult.
In no way do I believe that any of these countries do not want definitive answers.

I do have a question about continued pings.

If it was not flying over the areas, could the pinging part be tossed about in that particular part of the ocean? Is that feasible? It is simply a part. The ocean is considered "roiling" and dangerous. Just a question observation.

Still sticking with, if pilot was still alive, he was saving the masses by trying to get it to sea and not land. That may not have been the original saving plan, he could have been trying to land and could not land, all controls lost. It is better for a plane to go down at sea than on land, sadly - only those on the plane die - not many more on land. Also, keep in mind fuel dumps are only good on water - not great, but preferred - if necessary.

Something happened, in a second, on that plane. Much like it does in a car, a computer, a cell phone, a blackberry, a hair dryer, an electric razor, what have you. It only takes a fraction of a second really. Just my thoughts ... Thanks for listening.

Can a pinging part float in a turbulent wave or many?

Not as ridiculous as it sounds. There are weird true course vs magnetic course anomalies in the Great North. Not inferring that is what happened in the First Air case.

The Polar Keyhole comes to mind.

At this point will anyone else be surprised if the Malaysian authorities turn around and announce that they were wrong and the plane never actually left the airport that night, and the passengers have been holed up in an Airport Hilton? Sweet mother of God, this is frustrating.
