It's my understanding it can be degraded manually within the cockpit. The reason for that being once a plane has landed Pilot degrades the system which is expected from Air traffic control. In order to disable it completely it requires going under the cockpit. Also my understanding it was disabled completely.
But wasn't the secondary part of the ACARS system what kept "pinging" the satellites? Or was that some other device?

oh well, we all posted condolences on facebook

wait, condolences for the victims or the suspects?

TIA

Victims.

And I don't find it suspicious, as some do, because he was in another country. That was a major, major story. I'm from Boston and I could not believe how much coverage it got internationally and nationally. It's unfortunately seemed to become the main association with the city, especially internationally.

the pilot had an 'interest' in the Boston Bombing? so there is new news? what's this about then?

He wrote condolences on the pages of of some the victims/their families.
I'm not concerned about it at all.
Like I said earlier, I took interest in the Boston Bombing as well.
I think most people did.

ITA.
I can't see the plane having a catastrophic event and then still managing to fly for another 7 hours. It just doesn't seem possible.

Maybe the electronics malfunctioned so badly ie: corrupt data, it recorded it was flying around for 7 hours?

I want to read more about this aircraft's electronic system, because it seems to use software that can be hacked or go corrupt.

I understood there is a special program and pings set up by Rolls Royce to ping engine information back to the engine manufacturer (mentioned in various threads by pilots on this board) If I recall correctly and it cannot be disabled unless you were a technician. It pings while the engine is on.

Do people not use the term good night anymore or something? If he'd said some random word, I could see trying to decode it. But he was signing off...and it was at night...there's no mystery to decode unless you think the pilot was trying to create some indecipherable double meaning as a hint.

I'm sure this has been answered, but all communication was in English during this time, right?

I don't know. We've all assumed the communication was in English, but it could have been in Malay. No audio has been released to confirm what language it was said in.

If it was in fact spoken in Malay, could there maybe be a mistranslation happening here?

Yes, the most sensible suggestion is that he said "Alright, good night", because he meant alright and good night.

At this point, it could be 2000 feet in a vast ocean somewhere. IDK anymore.

I still have hope though. :candle:

There are some theories which appear to be more plausible than others, however, and I do not discount Israel's concern over Iran, especially with two men from that country on board with stolen passports. We have come to learn that the stolen passport business is huge in the area of the world where the flight originated, something Israel would most likely find incomprehensible. Many are now thinking nothing of it, especially as these two particular individuals do not appear to have any flight training. However, it is never unwise to take precautions.

And yes, the plane could be in the middle of the ocean, or in "enemy territory".

MOO

http://aircraft.wikia.com/wiki/Boeing_777

"On April 2 1997, a Boeing 777-200ER (dubbed the "Super Ranger") of Malaysia Airlines, broke the Great Circle Distance Without Landing record for an airliner by flying east (the long way) from Boeing Field, Seattle, to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a distance of 20,044 km (10,823 nmi), in 21 hours, 23 minutes, more than a scheduled range of the 777-200LR. The flight was non-revenue with no passengers on board. The -200ER is also recognized for another feat; the longest ETOPS-related emergency flight diversion (177 minutes under one engine power) was conducted on a United Airlines' Boeing 777-200ER carrying 255 passengers on March 17 2003 over the southern Pacific Ocean".

Anderson Cooper 360° ‏@AC360 19m

"When the word came out they were considering hijacking… there was euphoria because they may be alive" Paul Yin [grief counselor] on #MH370 families.

I find this kind of disrespectful - why is he telling the world about these unfortunate families' most terrible moments? he's a grief counsellor who should be maintaining a role as a confidante and support IMO

Another aircraf,t SIA68, was

- in the immediate vicinity as the missing MH370 flight at precisely the same time.

- was en-route on a heading towards the same IGREX waypoint on airway P628 that the Malaysian military radar had shown MH370 headed towards at precisely the same time.

Would it be possible for MH370 to fly in the "shadow" of another plane, in order to avoid being detected by radar? Someone (on tumblr, so I can't post link it, since it's no MSM) suggests it eventually flew (without transponder / ADS-B, therefore invisible to other aircrafts) in the shadow of SIA68 through India and Afghanistan. When they entered Indian airspace, both planes would have shown up as one single blip on the radar with only the transponder information of SIA68 lighting up ATC and military radar screens.

Here's an image of the flight path from March, 8 when MH370 went missing.

One can also check the track log for Mar,8:

However I can't imagine there's only one plane detected by radar, assuming MH370 really flew in SIA68's shadow.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think some expert said on CNN that even though many countries clame their radar system's to be precise, some are still in need of improvement and IIRC he even said that if MH370 flew at a lower altitude, it might very well not have been detected, depending on how well-engineered the specific radar systems are, so mhm.

I've seen reports write the final words as either "All right, good night" or "Alright, good night." Grammatically, both words are different. The first one means everything is good here, whereas the second one means okay (as in agreeing with someone/thing).

I'm probably just nit-picking here though because I'm a grammar Nazi :blushing:

Yes, apparently 'opposition group' in this case doesn't mean radical--it's a "legal" opposition group (meaning it's less than radical in the eyes of government).

snipped

Right. We have the Westminster system of parliament in Australia. We have two major parties, the Labor Party and the Liberal party, and several minor parties e.g. the Greens. Currently the Liberals (actually conservatives) are in gov't and Labor is in opposition. The leader of the Labor party is referred to as the opposition leader. For every gov't minister in charge of a portfolio there is an opposition minister, also called a shadow minister. For example, the opposition minister for finance. It certainly doesn't mean anything even remotely radical.

“The recording is now with air traffic control,” MAS chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said at a news briefing yesterday"

See, this is the kind of statements that are just driving people crazy! Why would the recording "now be with air traffic control"??? WHY is it not in the possession of the investigating team? IS there an investigating team?

Either the investigating team, if there is one, is lame or these "spokespeople" are lame. Or BOTH! This is really a sad, sad situation when obviously incompetent people are "running the show" on something of so much potential importance to the entire world.
