This is beyond weird, right? Why would nearly 1/3 be children? Was it a school situation? That may be one of those early reporting mistakes.

Although the rebels have now denied shooting down the commercial airliner, earlier in the day Igor Strelkov, the republic’s Russian defense minister, took credit online for downing a plane he thought was Ukrainian.

According to a translation by The Interpreter, a news site financed by the Russian dissident Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s foundation, Mr. Strelkov posted links to two videos of smoke rising over eastern Ukraine and wrote on his VKontakte page:

In the area of Torez, we have just shot down an AN-26 airplane, it is scattered about somewhere by the Progress coal mine. We warned them — don’t fly ‘in our sky.’ Here is a video confirmation of the latest ‘bird drop.’

The bird fell beyond the pit refuse heap, it did not damage the residential sector. Civilians were not hurt.

There is also information about a second downed airplane, apparently an SU.

Well now I can't find it... but an earlier image on msm seemed to show the planned flight path of this plane and where it was actually shot down --- looked like it was slightly off-course.
I'll keep looking for it.

Another point --- it appears that someone has taken responsibility for this atrocity :

I was listening/watching a local news/talk program on WDIV when news of the airline disaster broke. NBC news special report interrupted local programming, and my first thought was, WTF!?! A second Malaysian Airline disaster in just a few months? How strange is that? :waitasec: I don't want to speculate about a connection between the two incidents, but that was among my initial considerations. Hopefully, we'll learn much more in the coming days to help us understand what happened and whether or not the two Malaysian airline disasters are connected.

I wonder how Rebels even knew what to look for concerning locating the black box. (If this report is true)

If the Rebels were purposely shooting at it, they would be on the wreckage in no time. A simple google search of Black Box locations on planes gives practically anyone the info needed to find them.

Once in the right location of the right part of wreckage, the boxes would stand out as they typically are colored Bright Orange I believe.

The thing I worry about is the Rebels destroying all evidence of their missile shooting it down and trying to do a big coverup that it was not them.

I dont think I would fly Malaysia airlines if i could avoid it. They just have a bad track record lately. No matter what the reasons. Its horrible. Who loses 2 planes in such a short time.

They should have been more like 30000 KM over a war zone.....not 10000 KM

I have had a long stressful day, so please forgive if this response is snarky.

Firstly, it could have been any plane - how you can blame Malaysia Airlines for this is beyond me. They didn't 'lose' the plane, it was shot down using a long range surface to air missile, Until this tragedy, I do not believe this airspace at that altitude had been closed, so why would they fly anywhere else?

Secondly, I think you need to revise km and feet. The plane was flying at 10km which is 33,000 ft -a perfectly normal passenger airline cruising altitude. Your suggestion that they should have been flying at 30,000km would actually be a cruising altitude of 98,425,197ft - not even in the earth's atmosphere which is 480km deep.

From what I have seen in news interviews with 'leaders' of this separatist movement they seem to be brutal. ignorant of life in the world at large and more than a little stupid. And these are the groups that Putin is apparently signing off on giving military assistance to- including sophisticated weaponry.

If it is proven that this was a weapon supplied by the Russian government the world needs to agree on economic retaliation against Russia. Perhaps cutting off their access to banking perks like Visa, etc might damage their economy enough for awhile that their leaders think twice about supporting thugs like this.

It seems in the past few months the world has gone mad. Fighting we thought was coming to an end has only escalated .. the number of conflicts around the world make me incredibly grateful to live in what seems to be one of the few safer places on earth .. I fear for our future at this rate. Personally I'd like to see our government stay well out of any conflicts overseas that do not directly involve us, I believe we do more harm than good and need to let those countries sort their own issues out, and believe that would happen sooner without outsider influence.

That's all I have to say really.

Sadly, I think this is exactly what is going to happen - particularly since Vladimir Putin has offered Russia's 'help' in carrying out the investigation.
