Live Updates: Four Killed, Including Police Officer, in Midtown Shooting - NY Times
<snipped>
Commissioner Tisch said a black BMW pulled up on Park Avenue and a man stepped out carrying an M4 rifle and strode toward the building. He immediately shot the officer, sprayed the lobby with gunfire and went to the elevator, she said.

A woman came out of the elevator, and the gunman let her walk past him, the commissioner said. Then he went up to the 33rd floor, Rudin Management’s office, and shot another man before shooting himself.
Rudin firm is the owner of the building, from what I understand.

Deceased officer has young children and his wife is pregnant. :(

from presser
He probably took that security job because it was supposed to be safer than being on the streets. Heartbreaking...

At the risk of overplaying his football background, he played running back. I wonder if the car ride across the country was akin to "carrying the ball down the field" in his mind.

What do you mean? The security officer was an off-duty NYPD officer.

ETA: Oh, I think you mean safer than a beat on the street as a cop. I thought you meant safer than LIVING on the street. FWIW, he worked as a cop for a few years and doesn't seem to have shirked that difficult job.

Drove BMW and double parked outside bldg.
He entered the elevator that a woman had exited.
A woman from Rudin Mgmt was killed on 33rd floor.
Then he went to 32nd floor.

What company is on 32?

The building, completed in 1969, houses offices for the following companies:
  • NFL
  • Blackstone Group
  • KPMG
  • Rudin Management Company
  • Bank of America

So according to the presser, he chose the floor of the Rudin Property Management and killed someone there, while allowing a woman to exit the elevator unharmed.

That would seem to suggest that his target worked at Rudin, and he first killed the cop and anyone else who was in his way.

Documented mental health issues, yet still had a concealed carry license.

Atrocious.

If we are going to grasp for angles, a person that potentially suffered repeated head trauma could have early onset CTE. It's possible he was going after the head of the snake, the NFL offices, that for so long denied the ties between football and CTE (or other related diseases). A real reach, although driving from Vegas to New York with a long gun and strolling through the street with said gun and then making his way to the 33rd floor, would also be a reach.

A gunman seen carrying an M4 assault rifle killed four people, including one police officer, when he opened fire in broad daylight in the heart of New York City, before he reportedly took his own life.

In terrifying security camera photos, the gunman could be seen wearing a sport coat and button-down shirt while carrying the large rifle near a midtown Manhattan office building that houses Blackstone asset management and the NFL on Monday.

The gunman was identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Finally, a description of the weapon. It’s not a “ long gun”, it’s an assault rifle.

It’s an M4, a military rifle, either fully, semi-automatic or in “burst fire” mode. It’s a weapon ment to be used in military combat.

It’s similar to an AR 15. An assault weapon.

I always take the NYPost with a grain of salt, but they are allowed here and they do get things right far more often than wrong.

They are saying a total of 11 casualties with 5 deaths and 6 serious injuries, and they are identifying the shooter as Shane Tamura, 27, with pictures of various IDs of his,

See, this is why I say I take them with a grain of salt. NYPost has updated their coverage to say 4 people killed (in line with everyone else) and naming the deceased officer as Didarul Islam, a father of 2, expecting a 3rd. So sad.

It doesn’t appear that the shooter had enough time to scope out the building as he was on the road to NYC, pretty much until he stepped out of the car. Was he in the building to inflict carnage against a corporation, and was it Rudin?

A total of five people were shot by the gunman in the shooting in Midtown Manhattan today, according to New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Only one person shot survived and is in critical but stable condition, Tisch said at a news conference tonight. The man is being treated at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

The victims killed include Didarul Islam, 36, a New York City Police Department officer who was an immigrant from Bangladesh. He was a father of two and his wife is pregnant with their third child, Tisch said. Islam was also taken to New York Presbyterian.

One male and one female victim were brought to Bellevue Hospital and both died, Tisch said.

The fourth fatality is a female found dead on the 33rd floor of 345 Park Avenue, Tisch said.

Four victims are being treated for “minor injuries sustained in their attempts to flee the scene,” Tisch added.

The names of the civilian victims are being withheld until their families can be notified, said the commissioner.

I keep seeing a video of police dragging a handcuffed women down the street. How is that related? Who is she?

Is it possible that he got on the elevator, intending to go to a certain floor (to attack a particular company or a particular person) and, since it was after hours, the elevator would only access the building management company? He gets off the elevator....shoots up the floor, including one more victim, and then kills himself (perhaps in defeat since he went into the building with guns blazing and can't go back).

I wonder if she was the target, was she a love interest? Or an ex?

could have taken the stairs to any floor if he wanted to once he reached Rudin's floor.

Rudin actually owns the building. They have a huge real estate portfolio. 6:30 pm is still pretty early for a building of that type. Accounting firms can be there until the wee hours, with employees in and out for coffee and food runs. NFL is on lower floors. The press conference mentioned mental illness and medication found in his vehicle-are there rules about the mentally ill having concealed carry permits?

you would sure think so and for buying a M4 there should be rules around too, I believe

The gunman reportedly had played for Canada Football League. Perhaps it will be discovered that he suffered from CTE, a progressive brain disease found in some people who have received repeated blows to the head, such as football players. NFLer Aaron Rodriguez who was convicted of murder was thought to have this condition. Some think that O.J. Simpson may have had it.

Edited to add: I see @Panniniclaus also mentioned CTE in their post.

I just finished reading “Murderland” by Caroline Fraser, which chronicles the epidemic of serial killers in the Pacific Northwest and other highly industrialized areas during the ‘70s and ‘80s. It is excellent. The book looks at the possible relationship between dangerous chemicals such as lead and arsenic released into the environment, and the compulsion to commit depraved murders many times over. The statistics she presents are — no pun intended — mind-blowing. One of the most prolific killers covered in the book was ex-NFLer Randall Woodfield, known as the I-5 Killer. He was linked to 44 murders. Perhaps CTE was a factor here as well, although this isn’t mentioned in the book.

I do not think if any of these men had this condition that it excuses them!! My daughter lives just a few short blocks away from where the murders took place today. When I heard about the incident this evening, I was happy that she is vacationing out of the city so that I didn’t have to worry.

My opinion only.
