My eyes are either blue or green depending on who knows what. They are actually the exact color of the aqua colored contacts. So, some people call them green and some blue. Just depends who you ask.

Having said that - I don't think she's Ekaterina. Just a gut feeling. But it's good to have a picture of what she looked like in life.

I always thought they should take pictures of uid ears. I know I would know my child's ears no matter how hard the rest of her was to identify.

You're right - I was thinking of Elena Soldatova! I have sort of been on the fence about Ekaterina. I do see a resemblance. The thing is, Shaine actually saw MJD with his own eyes, so I totally trust his opinion.

Vashley - on another note.....how much of the swelling on MJD do you feel could have been caused by her injuries and hospital treatment?

In my personal opinion, I believe Elena and Ekaterina very closely look like MJD. Both are still pending matches, I believe...

Dee - do you know if Shaine has seen MJD's morgue photo? I'm just wondering if he can shed some light on the difference between how she looks in that photo and how he remembers her before the injuries took their toll. IMO - Ekaterina has features in life similar to those our little MJD had in death.

Shaine has seen MJD's composites based on her morgue photo. We didn't send him the actual morgue photo. He stated that MJD most closely resembled #6, #1, and #5 on the composite image. #6 was a composite done by Angie, #1 was a composite overlay of eyes and makeup on her morgue photo, and #5 was the actual forensic artist's drawing.

Shaine saw MJD in real life and he says that Ekaterina is a very close match to what he remembers her looking like while she was alive on that road.

ITA! My eyes are hazel, but if I'm tired, they're green and if I'm sick, more brown. That's exactly why I'm focusing on her other features and why I want to know how her injuries and/or treatment could have affected her features! Height and weight can be off with missing persons - so we can't put too much stock in that stuff!

When you go into shock, don't your iris' shrink because your pupils dialate? If that's the case, I can see where eye color could have been noted as blue when they may have been green and vice versa.

If this is any help at all, I sent this via PM to another sleuther on this case when we first got the ME report:

Basilar Skull Fracture: Frequently seen in auto racing deaths...the body decelerates, the skull does not resulting in separation and possibly leakage of spinal fluid into eye sockets or nasal passages or ears. (She was deformed on the right side of her face due to this leakage, not because of fracture.)

Bilateral subdural hemorrhages: Essentially shaken baby syndrome. Bleeding between the brain and the skull.

Left Temporal Contusion: Brain injuries happen two ways-the site of impact and the opposite side of impact. (Or direct trauma and acceleration/deceleration injury. Same thing. )

C1 Skull Separation Fracture: Usually fatal, frequently seen in car accidents or air bag deaths. Can be an extention of the Basilar Skull fracture.


Originally, I was trying to figure out how she hit when she came out of the car, but you more experienced medical folks might be able to get a sense of brain swelling CSF leakage if you haven't already considered it in it's entirety?

As for Shaine seeing the morgue photos, this is JMO-I think with the amount of swelling she clearly had from the time of her accident to her death...I am not sure it would have too much value and might really shock him. It was bad enough to see her after it happened I am sure...same with the hosp photos. Again JMO.

I totally agree. He was obviously very traumatized by what he already witnessed. Seeing the morgue photos is really unnecessary as he saw her alive - no need to show him something like that.

Hi All. I've not posted here before, but if I may point out a few things about Ekaterina: Date missing is 4/5/98. That's only a little over nine months before MJD was found. That would make her fairly new to prostitution. The ME report puts MJD age between 13 & 15, Ekaterina would have been 15 at the time MJD was found. One more thing is that earlier it was posted that someone interviewed thought her name was Carly or Cory, Ekaterina goes by Katie. Ekaterina is Russian, but if she were adopted into the U.S. at a young age, she wouldn't have much of an accent if any, but I can't find any info on how or when she came to the States. Ekaterina "left of her own accord" from Monteray CA and was thought to be in the Seaside CA area for a time. That would account for the fact that MJD was only reported to be in the area for a few months. With nothing available of Ekaterina but one blurry photo, I'll be the first to admit that I don't know if it's her or not, but the timeline certainly fits nicely.

FWIW, I vote Elena and Ekaterina the closest matches. Also, the sketch drawn - with the broach (sp?) also strongly resembles MJD. What alerted me to this view was seeing the hospital picture. When I first saw the hospital pic, I thought omg that looks like LO, my best friend in 9th grade. Way to old to be MJD, but I see a strong resemblence between the two.

It sucks that she resembles so many women out there. I mean, we have Elena and Ekaterina, but how many others out there resemble her too. Everyone seems to know this girl, but no one knows her name. It's frustrating because it seems that she's a very common-looking girl. There's probably a mother out there with a "it's not my daughter" mentality that very well could be this girl's mother but is in severe denial because the girl looks so much like everyone else...

If one of my kids were to come up missing I'd have every photo I own plastered everywhere. Like Ekaterina, one pitiful blurry photo, and two sentences about she "left of her own accord" and "may be in the Seaside CA area". I've seen a LOT of kids over the last year that I think could be MJD, but the photo is so bad that I wouldn't know it's her even if it was.

Aw now-maybe we just need to ask? Call LE and see if they can pull the case files and send us copies of any extra pictures. One of the LE contacts we had for the Benjaman Kyle case has lots of additional pictures of the missing man we were comparing him too...

I don't know if this has been posted already, but the ME website has updated MJD's case, and strangely took down the composites of MJD, and only her two morgue photos remain.

This was also updated in the "circumstances" section:

Circumstances This girl is believed to have jumped out of a moving vehicle in Pinal County. She later died in a hospital in Scottsdale. The people in the vehicle with her told police that she was a hitchhiker they picked up in central Phoenix but she never said her name; this story is accurate, and those involved have been proven to be telling the truth about not knowing who she is. She was possibly living on the streets or prostituting in the central Phoenix area.
