Namus currently shows 29 exclusions, but the two added since last year appear to be duplicates:

Interesting posts about the adoptee searching for birth mom named Betty Atwell. But I think it likely that these are two separate persons, since the birthmom was around in 1963, and Betty Marie Roberts disappeared in 1959.

Richard - if you are still here, now that we’re told she went by Betty Atwell at one time it seems there might be a connection to the Baltimore Betty Atwell mentioned by the Adoptee above.

That year she met a man who called himself Charles Wegman. He said he was a traveling photographer and Roberts and her sister met him when they applied for jobs as his assistants. Wegman appeared to be in his late thirties and said he was from Houston, Texas.

This troubles me...The fact that this man was a "traveling photographer" looking for young ladies for an assistant. It sounds like a sure-fire way to flatter young, unsuspecting women. In the 80s we were told never to fall for the photographer/modeling scams in the back of magazines. I've seen enough crime shows to know that there have been nefarious photographers before. Could that be why the FBI knew his correct name? He was on their radar?

She had a surgical scar below the left side of her navel.

Betty Marie Roberts and The Mysterious Stranger

According to the 1994 article, “Mysterious Stranger Tears Family Apart” when Louise showed Charles’ photo to the FBI an agent told her that they knew the man as Charles Dennison, not Charles Wegman. Agents refused to share any additional information about Charles’ possible criminal history or involvement with their organization...

This is odd. He's the last person her sister was seen with, and they give her his real name, and that's that? Was he working for them and if so, how did Betty fit into the equation?

There are some very strange things about this case... that she had a fight with her sister, who told her that if she left, she would no longer be her sister and that she shouldn't come back... and that she had been very close to her sister and that her sister had started looking for her... Was this the same sister she had the fight with?
She also had no reason to hide and live alone, but her children were placed in foster care after her disappearance, so it seems she was their primary guardian... Not wanting to raise your children seems like a compelling reason to remain in hiding...
The scenario that makes the most sense to me is that she left voluntarily... She discovered her sister was trying to track her down, felt she had burned her bridges there, and didn't want to raise her children, so she tried to minimize her chances of being discovered...
The three things that strike me as odd are:
That she didn't go with Charles Wegman.
That Wegman was known to at least one FBI agent who saw him.
That he didn't have a driver's license or a marriage certificate. I know some women who burn out about a decade after their disappearance... they never learned to drive... but relied on their husbands for transportation... so I find it odd that she lacks both... she could have been driving illegally or had a fake license (I've heard that was easier before), and also not married or married under a fake name... but it's still odd...
I don't think the lack of Social Security is odd... maybe she just passed away before having a chance to access it...

Has anyone done research on Betty with her surname rather than her married name or Wegman/Dennison name. What about DNA from her daughters any match on DNA websites for half-siblings? What about the adoption in Florida/Maryland with twins any resolution to that angle?
