Maryland knife laws:

I'm reading lots of conflicting articles about the knife laws.

SO, Maryland doesn't have a seat belt law?

And if they do, is there some reason that police vehicles wouldn't have to follow that law? Since of course, they are the ones who uphold the law?

Police officers are not EMT's, but aren't they trained in first aid? Aren't they capable of delivering babies in an emergency?

I'm asking you, as someone who has links to LE. My dad's life was saved by NYPD officers performing CPR. My mom always held them in high esteem because of that. It happened many, many years ago, and I am really curious to know if the same would happen today.

Yes, they are trained. I have done the training for CPR and first aid for the professional rescuers. I have a certificate that I must renew every two years, just like the police and other first responders. Under that certification, you observe for symptoms, including the report of the victim. AND, you call for a higher level trained professional once the victim's symptoms are beyond your level of expertise. On first ask for medical attention, FG may not have seemed to be in distress. When he was checked before arriving at the station and he was unresponsive, it definitely showed that he needed care beyond the training of the officers on site. They had more than one opportunity provide more advanced care. If he lost consciousness and they were rough riding the van, he may have been tossed like a rag doll. No one knows when his spinal injury occurred but he was asking for his inhaler at the first go around.

ETA: With this training I do not have the option of "good Samaritan" protection based on the level of training. I can be held responsible if I operate outside of my training. I work at a school and you can be that I kick it up to a nurse or EMT as soon as I am beyond my training.

A bit of research indicates the policy of belting in prisoners has been in place from at least 1997. It may have been revised recently, but it is not a new policy.

Thank you. I just doesn't make sense to not secure someone in the back of those vans, when their hands are cuffed and they have no ability to balance themselves.

And of course, there are seat belts there. I don't think they are there for decoration.

Nope....they don't when transporting dangerous criminals in the back of a wagon & here's why: the safety of the officers attempting to transport possibly violent criminals (who bite, kick, spit, etc at LE) outweighs the chances of a vehicular accident bodily damages which is what seat belts are intended for.

Seat belts don't take the place of padded walls inside a wagon; nor were the intended to. Seat belts don't take the place of a straight jacket to prevent self-inflicted injuries or injuries to others; nor were they intended to.

Mosby today after the charging speech:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4eujF6I6Is

She starts at about 10:30

Personally, I don't believe it's appropriate for her to make such a speech. I think she needs to limit her comments about this case. I don't think she needs to be talking to a church congregation about her role in this case.

I appreciate her comments commending the good work of honorable LEOs, but, IMO, I question the wisdom of everything else she said to the congregation.

She was speaking to the Multi-cultural Prayer Meeting of community religious leaders. Might not be a great idea but I like the idea that she and the police official are calling for a great working relationship between community leaders, LE, the legal system and the community.

Maryland knife laws:

I'm reading lots of conflicting articles about the knife laws.

Maryland Statute 59-22 is the knife law

It*shall*be*unlawful*for*any person*to*sell,*carry,*or possess*any*knife*with*an automatic*spring*or
other*device*for*openingand/or*closing*the*blade,commonly* known*as*a switch-blade*knife.

So it says any automatic spring but then SA said it was legal...

Another article about Maryland Knife Laws: it seems concealed carry status & different jurisdictions come into play. (By Carl Donath)

Max length: 4"
Relevant laws: State Laws (search for "knife")
Maryland
Summary: "Penknives" are OK. Anything else is borderline illegal and may require a concealed weapon permit.
Max length: None apparent.
Relevant laws: MD Statues Crimes and Punishments § 36, § 36A-O
Quirks: You may carry a "weapon as a reasonable precaution against apprehended danger", but it's up to a tribunal to decide the reasonableness/appropriateness of posession.
Local restrictions:
Cecil, Anne Arundel, Talbot, Harford, Caroline, Prince George's, Montgomery, St. Mary's, Washington, Worcester, Kent, and Baltimore Counties have special prohibitions regarding children under 18 carrying knives. See § 36(a)(3).

Miss Sunshine---what's with all the asterisks?
FG had his knife concealed-carry.

That makes a difference too according to some of the articles I'm reading.

FG has been arrested many times before. I will not be surprised if during past arrests and transports that he pulled played injured and requested medical help, just to be given medical assistance finding nothing wrong with him. If any of these officers have seen him do this before, I can see why they didn't believe him this time. I am not saying this is what happened. I just won't be surprised if it did happen.
