Based on the searches I'm aware of and other cases here on WS I believe the immediate family, especially those directly involved with the missing person do not participate in the searches. They usually remain at the command center. This is for their protection, can you imagine finding your own child or loved one deceased, and to protect the evidence.
I think I read at the beginning that neither parent had legal custody of Ayla and the mother had just filed papers for custody.
