ME ME - Stefanie Damron, 13, New Sweden, 24 Sep 2024

I listened to the presser. Offering $15k reward. This was not unusual behavior for Stefanie. Sounds like she has walked away numerous times before. DHHS was sent to the house. One journalist asked about the lack of running water in the home. Said she had no cell phone but did allude to some level of access to social media. No mental health concerns they were aware of. She does not have a passport.

It seems LE doesn’t really have a solid leaning one way or another. They are leaving all options open, but telling hunters to be extra vigilant- says they also feel foul play is possible.

Hope that’s not the case, but leaving with someone she may have met on social media is downright scary.

<modsnp - quoted post was snipped> I hope she is safe somewhere.

I think I fear for the harm close at hand more than stranger danger in this case, but I'm still on the fence. Poor child.
I agree. The first time I heard about the case I looked up the approximate location on a map via street view. I thought, “What a beautiful place this is.” Until I stopped at a red mailbox with a rundown looking path, a deserted car, and old appliances. Creepy I thought. Turns out, that’s her house. But enough about gut feelings. The background reports don’t look very good either. I’ve tried to keep an open mind, and there are so many possibilities as to what might have happened. Did she run away, was she abducted, human trafficking at the border, bears (it’s hunting season), hunters (again, hunting season). I wondered about the possibility that a hunter accidentally killed her, but then covered it up.

But, that brings me back to the gut feeling. Also, there’s a track record here. I’ve been saying this on chat groups I’m a part of. I really think this calls for some high tech equipment such as GPRs and grid search drones. It’s possible they need the correct warrants and permission for this, and they’re focusing their efforts on finding her as a runaway or with someone.

It's also extraordinarily unusual for the FBI to be involved and offering a reward in a teen runaway case. That to me screams foul play. Looking at the statistics, it's more likely that someone a child knows will harm them than a stranger.

If a bear or wild animal had attacked her, they would have found evidence while searching the woods. There would have been blood, flesh, and bits of clothing. And if her body were out in the open after a certain period, the scavenger birds would be circling overhead.

From what I know about Maine, it is the 2nd or 3rd safest state in the U.S. with few missing person cases.

Not all borders to Canada have a road running next to them. Parts of the U.S. and Canada border run through the woods and are only patrolled by cameras, not the mounted police. I doubt this is a human trafficking situation. 1% of missing person cases happen at the hands of a stranger. Maine has low human trafficking numbers, and I doubt a trafficker is out sitting in the wilderness waiting for a youngster to appear. Someone being nabbed is more likely to happen in Portland or Lewiston than in a dinky rural area.

I think this is more of a case where someone living in the home has hurt Stefanie and used her past runaways as a cover-up. Kids don't run away because they feel safe at home. I believe she was being abused by her folks. This is why she didn't have a cellphone, was homeschooled, lived in a rural area, and lacked access to social media. Her family wanted to keep her secluded from other people.

Anyway, if their land isn't posted, a hunter may find her remains during a hunt; at some point in time, when the ground is bare. I was hoping that if she did get lost in the wilderness she would have shown up on a trail camera. Hunters put up trail cameras in the woods to get an idea of where they can catch game animals. It was bear season during the time Stefanie had supposedly gone into the woods. If her family hadn't murdered her, it is possible that she was accidentally shot by a hunter.

Sadly, I doubt that this case will have a happy outcome because of the amount of time that has passed.

From the People article:
"We live a half mile back in the woods and our kids are very comfortable in their surroundings so there was nothing to raise flags the first few hours," they said at the time.
At the news conference, Gosselin said that, based on authorities’ knowledge, Damron has no current access to electronic devices, later adding she did not have a cellphone at the time of her disappearance.
Gosselin also told reporters that going missing is not an uncommon behavior for Stefanie, and he believes that is why her family waited a little longer until they contacted police.
Jeri Harms, Stefanie's great-aunt, earlier told the Brooklyn Squad podcast that Stefanie had run away before but was always found in the woods by family members.
This jumped out at me for two reasons. It claims Stefanie was familiar with the woods surrounding their home.
And the family uses this as a reason to explain why they waited to contact police.
I believe she was missing a whole day before she was reported missing.

I just went down the same rabbit hole. As mentioned previously, no running water in the house and she’s not enrolled in school. New Sweden is a town of about 600 people, so I can’t imagine Stefanie has much opportunity to socialize. Particularly if she doesn’t have devices or social media. The Daily Mail article is concerning, re: Texas CPS. As are her father’s recent Facebook updates of standup comedy routines, his enthusiasm for motorcycles, and memes which have nothing to do with his missing child. Also, the family is not involved with the ongoing search party that is canvassing their dense forest? What?

None of the historical or current family circumstances bode well for Stefanie’s safe return.
I agree with the poster who thinks the timeline when she was reported missing is off. Treading carefully in stating my opinions.

I agree with you. You make some excellent points. Family or possibly a hunter. It does seem that she was incredibly unhappy, as she had supposedly run away often (and just judging by the few most recent photos). If she had met someone she thought could help her get away, they may not have had her best interests in mind.

The reports that I’ve found on her family aren’t good. I would think that a more thorough search of their area is in order. From the start, the randomness of the finger pointing had me scratching my head.

From the family…
There was an argument. She walked into the woods or down the street. Someone thought they heard a truck or motorcycle. She must have met someone on social media. Maybe she was on a dating website. Maybe it was an older man. She ran away frequently and they’d find her sleeping with pigs in the woods. There’s drug activity and smuggling near the border, so maybe she was too near that.

I know I’m full of scenarios too, but this combined with a lack of assistance with the searches, press conferences, or anything else is pretty suspicious.

I’ve noticed that as well, regarding the very recent FB posts. And anger over the public’s perception. I noticed Stefanie double flipping off the photographer in one of her mom’s pics. This doesn’t really prove anything, but it’s a far more recent photo and she looks terribly unhappy. I know I responded to another post that stated if she was abducted, it would most likely be someone she knows, but in a town this size, it could be someone local that she does know. I looked at sex offenders in the area, and there are many in that area, with one only nine minutes away. I also looked into local residents and found one man a road down, who had been arrested for breaking into someone’s home, burglarized them, and hit the victim in the face with a shovel. So Maine might be pretty safe, but it seems even the small towns have problems.

A vigil was held Saturday afternoon to raise awareness of a teen missing from New Sweden for nearly three months.

Family members, loved ones, and members of the community gathered at the New Sweden First Baptist Church to share Damron's story and to hold a moment of silence.

People were also asked to write letters and wear purple, Damron's favorite color. The letters are part of a community-organized effort to get messages into the public in hopes of Damron seeing them. There is a social media page dedicated to sharing those letters.
