Oscar Pistorius Hires Dream Team Ahead of Murder Trial

http://world.time.com/2014/02/07/oscar-pistorius-dream-team-murder-trial/#ixzz2suyc8vZW

The trial is going to be one of South Africa’s biggest legal showdowns, with the Pistorius team going up against prosecutor Gerrie Nel, a court veteran who won a corruption charge against ex-Interpol president and former South African police commissioner Jackie Selebi.

It’s the quality — and size — of the Pistorius legal and forensic team that makes the trial exceptional in the country. There’s going to be a large reliance placed on forensic evidence that will be dissected, by both sides, down to the last molecule.

1. Forensic geologist Roger Dixon

2. Roder, Evidence Room, an American forensic animation firm based in Cleveland, Ohio, that specializes in crime scene re-enactments. Roder founded the business in 2003 after successfully using animations in court to demonstrate shootings.

3. Kenny Oldwage, an erudite lawyer famous for helping acquit the man accused of killing Nelson Mandela’s great-granddaughter Zenani in a drunk driving car crash

4. The quick-witted Barry Roux, known for his fondness of wearing scarlet ties to court.

5. Private forensic pathologist Reggie Perumal known for testifying on the death of Zimbabwe’s former army general Solomon Mujuru, reportedly attended Steenkamp’s autopsy — a rarity in South Africa.

6. Firearm expert, specialist in guns and bullets - Thomas Wolmarans, a former forensic expert with SAPS based in Pretoria.

7. Jannie van der Westhuizen, whose services include “shooting scene reconstruction and re-enactments” and blood splatter analysis

Pistorius is “extremely overwhelmed” and is spending time with his family in anticipation of the trial as “a forensic scientist is not on anybody’s side.

It seems Steenkamp’s mother is to attend OP trial. Also detectives have still not been given access to Pistorius’ mobile phone due to FBI red tape.

“As the first anniversary of her killing approaches, the model and reality TV star's family, who have not appeared at any previous court hearings, confirmed that June and "other family members" would be at the trial, which begins on March 3rd in Pretoria.”

“It was reported earlier this week that South African detectives have still not been given access to Pistorius' mobile phone, which they believe could contain vital evidence, just three weeks before the trial is due to start.
The three phones found on the bathroom floor of Pistorius' Pretoria home are seen as potentially vital evidence because of text messages that may be stored on them.
FBI 'red tape' has been blamed for the delay.”

HARASSED BY MEDIA AND PUBLIC

Taylor-Memmory says she was harassed by the media as well as the public after the incident. “I received hate mail on a daily basis. People who didn’t know me from a bar of soap were calling me the most horrific names. It became so difficult at a stage that I needed a bodyguard when I went out in public due to all the hate rants.”

She says although it has been an extremely difficult process, she has no regrets. “Some days I wish I had never gone through with it all, but I stood up for myself, which was extremely difficult especially when you feel like the whole country is against you. But I’m proud of the fact that I never backed down and I learnt that you should always stand up for what is right, even when you stand alone.”

She also denied suggestions by Pistorius’s camp that she was only after the money and fame. “All I wanted was an apology from Oscar and the settlement of the legal fees. I have never made a public appearance or even approached the media about it.”

This may show which way the dedicated TV channel will be leaning, should one be able to watch it.

“On Sunday Carte Blanche will devote the hour to a special report on Oscar Pistorius in which leading crime scene experts will reveal “startling findings” according to the pay-TV broadcaster’s weekly investigative magazine show.”

"A few words from my heart:

"The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life."

"No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved - and continues to love - Reeva.

"The pain and sadness - especially for Reeva's parents, family and friends - consumes me with sorrow.

Oscar Pistorius lawyers object to live broadcast of trial

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/wor...o-live-broadcast-of-trial-20140219-hvcz7.html

The most important excerpts from this report:

Oscar Pistorius' defence lawyers are strongly opposing applications by South African television stations to broadcast live the double-amputee Olympian's entire murder trial. Prosecutors say they have no problem with certain parts of the blockbuster court case being filmed.

Pistorius attorney Kenneth Oldwadge told the Associated Press on Tuesday that the defence was arguing against the TV applications, which he said sought permission from the judge to broadcast the entire trial live.

"We are certainly opposing it," Mr Oldwadge said.

The prosecution did not object to live TV coverage of the opening arguments and rulings by the judge, National Prosecuting Authority senior spokesman Nathi Mncube told the AP. Mr Mncube said the NPA also had no objection to broadcasting the sentencing, should Pistorius be convicted.

However, Mr Mncube said the NPA was opposed to any witness testimony being televised.

"We feel that would not serve any interest, especially the interest of justice," Mr Mncube said.

Oscar Pistorius: Cracking the incorrect Apple ID

The most important excerpts from this report:

“Your Apple ID or password is incorrect!”

These are the words detectives working on the Oscar Pistorius murder case have been staring at for nearly nine months. They don't care what music the athlete listens to, or what TV series he watches.

They are looking for information stored on iCloud – every iMessage, email and any other communication between himself and the woman he shot dead, Reeva Steenkamp. Their search extends to everything Pistorius has deleted from his iPhone – in that digital footprint, they hope to find incriminating evidence.

Brian Webber, an attorney on Pistorius’ legal team, insists they gave investigators the right password to the Apple iTunes account.

He said: “It worked in June last year and it works now. We have cooperated fully with police.”

Apple experts say there are two reasons a password could be wrong: either the phone’s owner remotely changed the password or the owner opened a new account, in which case the new password would not correspond with the Apple ID on the phone.

Webber says they only supplied police with the password and not the ID as they thought detectives already had that on Pistorius’ iPhone.
