PoliceÂ’s top dog probing Pistorius
2014-02-21

Who is Lieutenant-General Vineshkumar Moonoo?

1. A detective for 29 years, Moonoo was named divisional commissioner of the detective branch in 2011 by former police chief Bheki Cele.

2. Described as the "top detective in the SA Police Service (Saps)" when they announced that he would replace Warrant Officer Hilton Botha in the Pistorius investigation.

3. Blemish-free reputation

4. Has succeeded in staying off the media radar despite the high voltage coverage of the case against OP.

5. "In 1982, I volunteered to work in the tracing unit as there were eight cases of housebreaking and theft and theft of vehicles a day in Lenasia. In my first month, we arrested 32 people and the rate of similar incidents dropped to one a week"

6. Became a detective three years after entering college.

7. From 1984 stationed in Kliptown, marking the start of a long period working in Soweto where he eventually became area head for detective services.

8. Appointed to head a division of the organised crime branch and promoted to major general in 2002.

9. In 2013, Phiyega named Moonoo to head a special task team to investigate some 250 robberies where the suspects wore police uniforms and used blue-light vehicles.

10. Also co-ordinating the investigation of a fatal bomb blast last year at a gold dealership in Bedfordview that belonged to controversial Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir.

11. Considers the case of the decade to be "business as usual".

12. Believes the media contingent covering OP case had been "more persistent than he believes is necessary and promised not to allow the scrutiny to compromise the investigation.

13. Police ministry has declined to release Moonoo's CV, saying he has specifically asked them not to.

14. Does not want to be in the media. The case is in the media, but he does not want to be.

15. Police also refused to say how many "highly-skilled" investigators were assisting Moonoo with the case

Today we will hear whether OP's team has been successful in opposing a court application for live broadcasts of the trial. This is how the NPA feels about it all.

The National Prosecuting Authority initially had fears when eNCA sought to broadcast the proceedings. The court heard an application by print media houses, eNCA, MultiChoice and Eyewitness News to broadcast the trial.
However, the NPA's concerns were allayed by additional provisions brought by MultiChoice, Mncube said.

"We do not want our witnesses to be intimidated. We do not want them to be exposed if they don't want. All of that was addressed by the technology which MultiChoice brought and some concessions that were made.

"I don't know if it makes good sense to the public to say 'we want to [use] taxpayers' money to oppose the application of a person we as NPA are charging'. It doesn't make sense, we would rather focus on the criminal case we are pursuing."

Responding to claims that Reeva Steenkamp's parents were opposed to the bid to broadcast the court proceedings, Mncube said the NPA's decision was in the interests of justice. "We are not here to look after just one witness. It's unfortunate that family is affected because it is their child who was killed. The people that are going to testify are not the family, but witnesses. I think what the family wants is to see justice served. "

Evidence given by Pistorius and his witnesses will also be exempt from the ruling, the judge said

What a pity! That was the part I was most interested in.

The judge ruled that the entire trial could be broadcast on radio and that substantial portions of it — including opening arguments and testimony by experts and police officers, along with the closing proceedings — could be broadcast on television.

But, he said, witnesses could refuse to give consent for their testimony to be televised.

“Court proceedings are public and this principle must be recognized,” the judge said. “It is in the public interest that the goings-on be covered” as he had determined, he added. He also said the ruling would counter a broad perception in South Africa that the judicial system treated the rich and famous “with kid gloves” but that it was harsh on the poor.

Oscar Pistorius murder trial may be partly televised, judge rules

Johannesburg (CNN) -- A South African high court ruled Tuesday that cameras will be allowed in court for part of athlete Oscar Pistorius' trial in the killing of his girlfriend.

Pistorius goes on trial on March 3, accused of murdering his girlfriend, model and law school graduate Reeva Steenkamp, just over a year ago.

Twitter Inc : Oscarnado - the Madness Begins

The tide doesn't seem to be turning for Oscar Pistorius any time soon. Tuesday's judgment in the matter of media access to the Pistorius trial means that the murder-accused athlete must now face the prospect of having his character, activities and past picked apart in front of a live audience. Whichever way the trial goes, that probably isn't going to do the Pistorius brand much good: something anticipated by Pistorius's opposition to a live trial broadcast.

On the other hand, the fact that the Pistorius PR machine has set up a Twitter account (@OscarHardTruth) dedicated to correcting the "untruths, half-truths and versions of the truth" spread up till now suggests that they haven't been delighted with the tenor of media reporting on the matter thus far. At least the benefit of a live trial broadcast, from their perspective, should presumably be that a global audience will be able to witness events unmediated by those they accusing of holding "ulterior motives".

Recent research suggests that the Pistorius camp may have reason to want to wrest control of the narrative. The Media Online reported on Tuesday that company Media Tenor SA's analysis of TV news bulletins about the Pistorius case found that coverage of Pistorius in South Africa since the shooting has been predominantly negative – a far cry from the adulation he once received as a champion Paralympic athlete. Researcher Minette Niewoudt was quoted as summarising the shift thus: "First, he was an athlete who stumbled. Now, he's a criminal who used to be an athlete."

Also from the above report:

Primedia's Alastair Teeling-Smith, Programming Manager for 702, confirmed that Primedia would be broadcasting the audio of the trial live on a pop-up radio station running across the websites of 702, Cape Talk, Highveld and Kfm.

I don't know whether we also will be able to hear their audio broadcast

First time I have seen this:-

Dressed to Die? Clothes Are Key Evidence in Pistorius Case

"It cannot be explained as of now," he said Steenkamp's attire, "until such time the accused can actually take up a stand and say, 'She decided to put on clothes to go to the bathroom' or 'She decided to say, "I'm gonna sleep in clothes. I'm not gonna put my nighties on."'"

Another prosecution spokesman, Nathi Mcnube, told "Dateline" that what Steenkamp wore will be central to the government's case when the trial opens Monday.

"There is a piece of evidence around the clothes that could suggest what happened there," he said. "To disclose it now would be to disclose a lot of our thinking around the case before the time."

Dateline NBC will be doing a show tonight on this. Since most of you are in another country other than U.S., I will say, videos will be up by tomorrow on the website. Will most likely not have anything new to anyone here, but thought I would let you know. If the first thing up is not Pistorius, poke around the site for videos.
