Jaycee Lee Dugard's Aunt Shares Story Of Reunion
Sep 3, 2009 11:20 am US/Pacific

Dugard and the two daughters she had with her accused kidnapper and rapist, Phillip Garrido, spent several emotional days reconnecting with her mother, Terry Probyn, according to Probyn's sister. Jaycee's younger sister was also at the reunion, reports CBS station KOVR-TV in Sacramento.

"We spent time sharing memories and stories and getting to know each other again. Jaycee remembers all of us," said Dugard. "She is especially enjoying getting to know her little sister who was just a baby when Jaycee was taken."

She said the family has laughed and cried together.

"I remember thinking, 'Wow, she's French-braiding Jaycee's hair for the first time in 18 years,'" Tina Dugard told the paper.

Tina Dugard said Jaycee recognized her instantly when they first met, shouting "Auntie Tina!" when she entered the room.

Tina Dugard said the two daughters, ages 15 and 11 and reportedly named Starlet and Angel, were "educated and bright" - at one point pointing out constellations and edible plants - despite receiving no formal schooling. Dugard also said they "know what's been going on" but had not been allowed to watch news coverage of their fathers arrest.

Rapist Garrido wanted to reveal Jaycee Dugard and kids in a sick bid for attention

There is only one reason why Phillip Garrido is in jail and Jaycee Dugard is back with her mother after 18 years in captivity.

And it's not because two Berkeley police officers noticed something bizarre about Garrido and his robotlike daughters when they wandered onto the University of California-Berkeley campus. Not to dismiss the notable instincts of those cops, but it's pretty clear to me why Garrido was captured:

He wanted to be. It was all part of his plan.

Garrido, the monster accused of grabbing 11-year-old Jaycee in 1991, raping her and fathering her two children, believes he has a story to tell, a "wonderful," "heartwarming" story about his personal power, about finding salvation and how the government is trying to control our minds. He needs an audience for his paranoid rants, a bigger audience than he was attracting on his blog. A bigger crowd than he could possibly have gathered on the Berkeley campus.

He wants the attention of the whole world. And now, I'm sad to say, he's got it.

An unbelievable tale

The release of Jaycee Dugard is indeed a harrowing story, made for 24-hour news channels. The hidden backyard compound, the unforgivable incompetence of the cops who failed to find her. Her pain, her stolen childhood. The years her parents spent not knowing, and then the phone call out of the blue from a 29-year-old woman who said, "Hi, Mom. I have babies."

And then there is Garrido, with his haggard face and vacant eyes. Who knows how long Jaycee would have gone on living as his wife/daughter if he hadn't chosen to go public?

This monster may be vile and evil, but he's not stupid. He figured out how to act normal enough to get out of prison after serving just 11 years of a 50-year sentence for rape. He evaded the cops for 18 years, while wearing a GPS monitor. Granted, he got a lot of help from shoddy work by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, but he still managed to con the cops and his parole officer into thinking he was just a kindly neighborhood reformed rapist, minding his own business.

Playing the media

When he decided the time was right, he knew how to become an overnight media sensation: just introduce Jaycee to his parole officer.

It worked like a charm.

On Thursday, the day after he and his wife, Nancy, were arrested, Garrido called a Sacramento TV station. The jailhouse interview was a taste of what we can expect as this sickening man's case winds its way through the legal process.

Garrido teased the reporter with promises of a "wonderful, wonderful story" that was going to go worldwide. He promised an exclusive if the reporter would go dig up the documents he had given to the FBI — rambling passages about mind control and sex addiction. He didn't want to focus on the crimes he committed but about how happy he was to have turned his life around. How wholesome and happy his little family was: he, Nancy, Jaycee and the kids, camping out in the backyard.

When Garrido went to court Friday, I hoped for a guilty plea. Assuming DNA tests prove her kids are his, he's going away for good this time. If he confessed, Jaycee and her children would be spared the glare of a trial and could get on with what's left of their lives.

And none of us would ever have to see his face again.

But pleading guilty didn't fit into Garrido's plan. He can't wait to tell his story to the world. And the world, it seems, can't wait to hear it.

Garrido Suspected Of 1972 Rape Of Girl In Antioch
Sep 3, 2009 2:31 pm US/Pacific

Jaycee Lee Dugard kidnapping suspect Phillip Garrido was arrested in 1972 on suspicion of raping a 14-year-old Antioch girl at the time, but the case never went to trial, police said Thursday.

Antioch police Lt. Leonard Orman told reporters at a news conference that the victim and a friend met then-21-year-old Garrido and another man near the public library on West 18th Street.

Orman said Garrido allegedly gave the girl barbiturates and then took her to an Antioch motel, where she was given more drugs and eventuallu blacked out.

He said when the girl awoke she was being sexually assaulted by Garrido.

Authorities said Garrido was set to be prosecuted in the case but that the charges were later dropped when the victim refused to testify in the case.

The victim in the case, now an adult who authorities said does not want to be publicly identified, called Antioch police after Garrido's arrest to alert them to her case.

Orman said the woman wanted to be sure that police knew Garrido may have had multiple incidents involving attacks against girls and women.

Antioch police urged any other possible victims of past attacks to come forward.

Wife who police say joined in abduction and rape of Jaycee Dugard worked as Contra Costa nursing aide

Nancy Garrido worked as a state-licensed aide for a respected nonprofit agency that serves 1,000 adults and children with disabilities, mostly in Contra Costa County, even as police say she helped Phillip Garrido keep Jaycee Dugard isolated and under sexual attack for years, authorities say.

She worked full-time for Contra Costa ARC from December 1994 until March 1998, arriving with stellar references as a nursing aide and physical therapy aide, said Barbara Maizie, the agency's executive director.

Maizie said Nancy Garrido worked with adults only. She arrived with a valid California Nurse Aide license, a history of nursing home work and a long résumé with both in-state and out-of-state references dating to 1981, Maizie said.

It is unclear how Bocanegra met Garrido, but one report says she was visiting a relative in prison. Property records show Nancy Bocanegra living in Denver, then moving to Leavenworth in the mid-1980s. Officials could not be reached for information about licenses she may have held in those states.

A top El Dorado County prosecutor declined last week to say whether evidence shows that Nancy Garrido physically participated in what police describe as a years-long series of rapes against Dugard, saying they only need to prove she aided and abetted with knowledge of the crimes.

But suspicions are boiling over her role, particularly because Garrido was locked up in federal custody, albeit briefly, on an unspecified federal parole violation in 1993. Felicia Ponce, a spokeswoman for the federal Bureau of Prisons, clarified Wednesday that Phillip Garrido spent 38 days in a secure facility before he was released to home confinement supervision in May 1993.

During that time, his wife watched over Jaycee Dugard, authorities told The Associated Press.

"You can reasonably infer from the charging document that the wife was doing that," said former U.S. Attorney McGregor Scott, who is acting as a special spokesman for the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office.

"The courts are very reluctant to open up to the idea of a mind control defense. It certainly is, to say the least, a last-ditch defense."

Police: Another Alleged Garrido Victim Comes Forward
Posted: 2:32 pm PDT September 3, 2009
Updated: 3:19 pm PDT September 3, 2009
<snipped>
A second woman has come forward claiming that Phillip Garrido, current in jail for the kidnapping and rape of Jaycee Dugard, sexually assaulted her repeatedly in an Antioch motel in 1972, authorities said Thursday.

Asking that the media respect the victim's privacy, Antioch police Lt. Leonard Orman told an afternoon press conference that the woman came forward after seeing Garrido’s photo on news reports about the Dugard kidnapping.

“She contacted the police department after viewing Mr. Garrido’s photo on television,” he said.

“She wanted to ensure law enforcement was aware of the 1972 arrest and the details around it. We truly do appreciate the victim contacting us because the records of this case no longer exist at as far as we can determine this time.”

“The victim was also concerned because it was very apparent to her at the time of seeing Mr. Garrido on television that he had continued to prey on young women since the 1972 incident."

Orman said the details of the incident had been assembled through “very brief records mostly involving dated and charges involving Mr. Garrido and a re-interview of the victim.”

At the time of the assault the woman told authorities she was a 14-year-old school girl who met Garrido at the Antioch Public Library.

“She was at the Antioch Public Library along with a friend,” Orman said. “They met Mr. Garrido and another male – whose identity she does not recall at this time. They got into a vehicle with Mr. Garrido and were provided barbiturates which were a popular drug of abuse at the time.”

Orman said Garrido then allegedly took her to a local motel.

“There was a period of time where she ended up at motel with Mr. Garrido,” he told reporters. “After being given more barbiturates, she awoke to find herself there and was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted.”

“Eventually, her parents located her at that location. (They) called the police. The Antioch Police Department responded at that time and took the appropriate action which appears to involve the arrest of Mr. Garrido.”

Orman said Garrido was charged, but never prosecuted. He could not explain why the case was not prosecuted.

Reunion of Jaycee Dugard and her family going well; police probing possible links to other cases

snipped...

After 18 years of praying for the safe return of Jaycee Dugard — crying every holiday and anniversary of her disappearance — Terry Probyn has found it's the everyday normal things that mean the world, now that she has been reunited with her daughter.

Laughing and crying. Sitting quietly holding hands. Listening to her voice, marveling at the 29-year-old adult woman before her, not the 11-year-old girl she last knew. Hugging the two grandchildren she didn't know she had, two girls aged 11 and 15, fathered by Phillip Garrido, the man accused of kidnapping Dugard.

In the first detailed picture of how the reunion has been going after Dugard was rescued from her kidnappers last week, a picture of joyful wonder emerged Thursday as Probyn's sister, Tina, Dugard's aunt, shared some of the moments with reporters at the FBI's office in Los Angeles.

(KTVI - FOX2now.com) - The obvious comparison in the Jaycee Dugard case for those of us living in St. Louis is Shawn Hornbeck. Shawn was held for more than four years by Michael Devlin in a one-bedroom Kirkwood apartment. Shawn is now 18. People magazine asked Shawn about the Jaycee Dugard case: why didn't she ever escape? Shawn says "you're brainwashed--it's as simple as that."

His advice for helping Jaycee heal is that she just has to move on--that you can't dwell on the past--he also says going through therapy helped him a lot.

Antioch not the sex offender rat's nest that media suggests, data show

It's a juicy nugget for the worldwide press, tripping alarms on the cable news fear-o-meter.

Anderson Cooper of CNN has the graphics to prove it and a roster of experts to explain how the local area where police say Jaycee Dugard was held in sexual bondage for 18 years has fast become a dense haven for registered sex offenders.

"How Jessica's Law turned Antioch into a paedophile ghetto," splashed a headline Thursday on the Web site of The Independent, a major British newspaper.

Disturbing, if true. Only it's not, according to a Bay Area News Group analysis of sex offender addresses and census data.

News that more than 100 registered sex offenders call Antioch home has sparked a TV news frightfest and stirred worry in local residents. But while the number of registered sex offenders per capita in the city places it above the Bay Area rate of slightly less than one per 1,000 people, Antioch falls well below dozens of other Bay Area communities, and barely cracks the top 10 in Contra Costa County.

Antioch police Chief Jim Hyde took pains to note that the Garrido home sits outside city limits in unincorporated Contra Costa County, which is patrolled by the county sheriff's office. But the city is taking flak from the case, he said, and from what he called "high school journalism" on sex offenders.
