UPDATED: Source Of Haleigh Tip Goes To Investigators
Woman Dropped Letter Off At Newspaper
POSTED: 5:19 am EDT September 24, 2009
UPDATED: 5:31 pm EDT September 25, 2009
<snipped>
They said the woman told them she was delivering the letter for someone else. The sheriff's office said it has been following up on leads based on the letter.

Some explosive allegations surfaced Thursday morning in the search for Haleigh.

A letter written by a friend of Misty Cummings explained what appeared to be a new theory about the disappearance of the girl and why Putnam County sheriff's deputies drained a pond over the weekend.

The letter was dated Sept. 18. That is one day before the pond outside Palatka was drained and searched.

Misty Cummings mother has been arrested in Tennessee on forgery charges after a Satsuma neighbor reported a gun and several checks had been stolen from his home. The arrest is unrelated to Haleigh's disappearance.

Haleigh letter Woman Found
September 25, 2009 4:40 PM
<snipped>
A woman who gave a letter to a local news paper regarding Haleigh Cummings has been found.

"She learned that they were trying to find her, so she came to the sheriff's office herself, she wasn't picked up she came on her own and talked to our officers for about an hour," Schauland said.

He said they are now following up on the tips but do not know if the information is solid or not.

"The officers are following up on it. The clarification they got her has helped. Hopefully it will lead to something that will help us to find Haleigh. But, you're right, we do not know at this point if it is good information or not," Schauland said.

He said the woman did not write the letter, she delivered it for someone else. He said he did not know why she went to the newspaper instead of the police in the first place.

Haleigh's mom breaks her silence
September 25, 2009
Last Update: 4:49 pm
<snipped>
"I had a dream about her that she knocked on my door. I got up and she wasn't there."

For Sheffield it's not about justice anymore. "I just wish whoever has her would bring her home. They could drop her off in my yard. I wouldn't say a word."

She says she doesn't talk to Haleigh's dad, Ronald, but believes he must have his doubts about his wife, Misty. "I hope he does because she was the last one to see his daughter. Everything that's going on should bother him. It would bother me."

Sheffield says she isn't sure what to believe, but she isn't giving up hope Haleigh is alive and coming home

Haleigh Cummings: What could letter say about Haleigh Cummings' disappearance? And why is it volatile?
posted by halboedeker on Sep 25, 2009 5:55:01 PM

Could there finally be a break in the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings?

The St. Augustine Record has received a letter about what might have happened to the girl, who has been missing since February. "If the information is accurate, it's going to be pretty volatile," Richard Pryor, an editor at the paper, told WESH-Channel 2.

He wouldn't discuss specifics, but he told WESH that the letter "could go a long way to solving what happened to her."

WESH played surveillance video a woman delivering the letter to the paper, but she told authorities she was merely a messenger.

Haleigh case: Mystery letter delivered
September 25, 2009
Last Update: 7:07 pm
<snipped>
Action News saw the woman walking into the criminal investigations building around 2p.m. Friday to speak with detectives. She left about an hour and a half later.

She told us she was a messenger and delivered a letter.

She didn't want to identify herself and said she did not know Haleigh's family.

Detectives are not telling us what they learned from her interview but they are saying she could hold the tip that will help them crack the case.

"This could be it," said Putnam County Sheriff's Office Captain Dick Schauland.

"It has to do with the whereabouts of Haleigh," said Schauland.

The information contained in the letter is being kept secret from the media and the public because detectives say they don't want to compromise the investigation.

"Somewhere down the line we are going to have a criminal investigation regarding this and we don't want to spoil any kind of case we may have," said Schauland.

New letter on Haleigh may prove helpful

Prior also did not discuss the letter's contents, but said, "There was absolutely no doubt that if it is legitimate that it's pretty volatile stuff. And we also realized that it's not our job to try and determine the legitimacy of the information," he said about contacting authorities.

"It's very specific about, very specific, some stuff that allegedly happened to Haleigh," said Prior, who had recently done a story about Ronald Cummings, Haleigh's father.

"This is not something that somebody scribbled to smuggle out of a jail cell," Prior said, referring to a separate letter related to Haleigh allegedly written by a jail inmate that Putnam authorities on Thursday described as a "farce."

"And I think that that lends it a little more authenticity," Prior added.

In addition to contacting officers, Prior said he also spoke to Ronald Cummings' attorneys about the newest letter.

Meanwhile, Lisa Croslin joined a list of people connected to Haleigh and her family who have recently been jailed after she was arrested in Tennessee.

A resident alleged to officers that Lisa Croslin cashed a check taken from him. The man, who also reported Hank Croslin Jr. took a gun from his home, said he was missing 10 checks. On Sept. 8, one of the checks made out for $400 was cashed in Lisa Croslin's name at a Palatka bank.

Woman with tip visits sheriff's office
Published: Saturday, September 26, 2009 4:19 AM EDT
<snipped>
The woman arrived at the sheriff's office at 2:15 p.m. Friday wearing blue scrubs and a blonde braided ponytail. She told the receptionist she believed detectives wanted to speak to her about a typed letter she left anonymously at the St. Augustine Record newspaper's front desk. Her visit there was recorded on a security videocam.

Rick Ryan, chief investigator of the sheriff's office, met her in the sheriff's office lobby and walked her across the parking lot to another building to be questioned.

"She is the messenger bringing the information from someone else, and we are following up on the information," Capt. Dick Schauland, spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, said. "What it amounted to was the tip she gave us needed clarification."

The sheriff's office isn't revealing the woman's name or the information contained in the letter.

"We don't want to mess up any type of criminal investigation that may happen down the line. However, if it will help find Haleigh we will certainly release anything," Schauland said.

The information has "no connection whatsoever" to another recent letter written by an acquaintance of Haleigh's stepmother, Misty Croslin-Cummings.

Haleigh Cummings Case Break Coincides with Lindsey Baum Case Break
September 27, 2009
<snipped>
On opposite sides of the country, police investigating the cases of little girls who seem to have vanished without a trace received information that could break the floundering investigations. Haleigh Cummings, 5, disappeared from Satsuma, Florida February 10. In McCleary, Washington, Lindsey Baum,10, left a friend's house and never made it home the night of June 26.

Could the followup on tips received in both cases lead to one or the other of the little girls being found soon? Will the imbalance of publicity affect the outcome of the two investigations?

New Tip in Haleigh Cummings Case Potentially Volatile
In Putnam County, Florida where Haleigh Cummings disappeared, a witness who dropped off a letter purportedly disclosing what happened to the little girl at the St. Augustine Record offices Wednesday voluntarily contacted police late Friday and participated in an hour long interview after learning that police wanted to speak with her. The woman purportedly acted only as a messenger in delivering the letter about Haleigh Cummings to the Record.

Capt. Dick Schauland of the Putnam County Sheriff's office told the Sentinel that if the information in the letter proves true, it could be very helpful in solving the Haleigh Cummings case. He told NEWS4JAX that the letter "...has to do with the whereabouts of Haleigh."

Inferences Drawn from Reports of the New Haleigh Cummings Tip
While police have declined to make public the contents of the letter, one important inference can be drawn from news reports on the latest letter from a tipster in the Haleigh Cummings case. That inference is that whatever the letter says about Haleigh Cummings' whereabouts does not explicitly implicate Ronald Cummings in her disappearance. Richard Prior shared the letter with Cummings before contacting the police. Had the letter implicated Ronald Cummings in any way, it's unlikely that the editor would have contacted Cummings and shared the contents of the letter with him, rather than going directly to police.

Disparate Media Coverage of the Baum and Cummings Cases
The Baum case is not as sensational as the Cummings case, in part because the Baum family and associates appear to be mainstream. The Cummings family and associates have earned their milieu the nickname Dysfunction Junction, with arrests for illegal drug use, battery, and forgery, allegations of child abuse, underage sex, and myriad other less than stellar behaviors.

Are dysfunctional lifestyle choices actually an aid to the Haleigh Cummings investigation, keeping the story in the headlines?

The apparent abduction of Lindsey Baum is of no less importance than the abduction of Haleigh Cummings, yet the absence of tawdry entertainment value associated with its reporting seems to minimize the news coverage.

While these most recent criminal charges against a relative of a key figure in the Haleigh Cummings investigation garnered wide publicity, the vigil marking the 3 month point in Lindsey Baum's disappearance passed largely unnoticed.

Letter Dropped Off Last Week Offered Burial Site For Missing Girl
POSTED: 11:55 am EDT September 28, 2009
UPDATED: 2:20 pm EDT September 28, 2009

Investigators said they found nothing at a possible burial site for missing 6-year-old Haleigh Cummings, who was last seen in February.

A letter was dropped off at the newspaper offices of the St. Augustine Record last week. According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, the letter contained information about a possible burial site of the Satsuma girl.

Also last week, two letters written by a friend of Misty Cummings brought to light a theory about what happened to Haleigh. The letters, written by Kristina Renee Prevatt, claimed authorities have a sworn affidavit indicating Haleigh died after accidentally ingesting OxyContin.

The Sheriff's Office said it did interview Prevatt, but would not verify the truthfulness of anything else in the letters.
