Letter alleging Haleigh died of overdose called a 'farce'

"I don't have any reaction to that letter," Sheriff's Chief of Staff Gary Bowling said. "It is a joke that the media is even reacting to this letter. It's ludicrous."

Robert Fields, Croslin-Cummings attorney, also dismissed the letter.

"That letter carries about as much credibility as toilet tissue. Put a little bit of water on it, and it dissolves," he said.

Fields, however, said that the search at the pond apparently was tied to the letter.

The attorney also commented on the different arrests of people related to or acquainted with some of the key players in the investigation, such as Croslin-Cummings' brother.

"Some of these may be legitimate arrests, but one has to consider the fact that there may be some special consideration being given to some arrests and how they fit in with the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings," he said. "They've admitted it's given them more leverage," he said, referring to investigators.

"Her story has been the same without blinking," Fields said about Croslin-Cummings. "She's been questioned by arguably the best for seven months. I don't really know what else they want out of her."

Asked about his client's current whereabouts, Fields said she had gone to Orlando to visit a couple of theme parks.

Deputies seek public’s help in HaLeigh case
Thursday, September 24th, 2009 at 4:52 pm by Peter Ellis
<snipped>
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t confirmed anything. HaLeigh has been missing since Misty Cummings, 17, last saw her Feb. 9. Investigators recently drained a pond off Florida 19, but the Sheriff’s Office said no evidence was found.

The young man, who has a history of drug arrests, was booked again Tuesday on charges of cocaine and marijuana possession. He was released on $1,500 bail. On the weekend before HaLeigh disappeared during a night of partying and drugs, the young man said he hooked up with Misty Cummings (then Misty Croslin) with the help of Prevatt after her fight with Haleigh’s father, Ronald Cummings.

Haleigh's Stepmom In Orlando To 'Clear Head'
Posted: 7:24 am EDT September 25, 2009
<snipped>
Eyewitness News was told Misty Croslin-Cummings is in Orlando, without her husband, Ronald Cummings, to "clear her head," after getting into an argument with him.

Her visit comes just two days after a jailhouse letter surfaced describing a theory about how the girl may have died.

So far, investigators in Putnam County are downplaying the significance of the letter. It says Haleigh died of an Oxycontin overdose while Misty was partying instead of watching her.

Misty's brother, Hank Crosslin, Jr., told detectives a week ago that Misty and Haleigh were not home the night little girl disappeared, even though Misty insists they were.

Detectives say they have spoken with the woman who dropped off a letter in St. Augustine last week about Haleigh Cummings.

According to Capt. Dick Schauland with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, she learned that detectives wanted to speak with her, so she came by the office voluntarily.

Detectives are not releasing the woman's name or the contents of the letter, but they say she told them she was dropping it off for someone else.

"My name, and the paper's name, and address was on the envelope, sealed," said Richard Prior, associate editor for the St. Augustine Record.

"It could go a long way to solving what happened," said Prior.

"If the information is accurate, it's going to be pretty volatile," said Prior.

Prior said at some point he would like to reveal the details in a newspaper article.

UPDATED: Jailhouse letter says woman asked by cops about possible Haleigh Cummings overdose
Inmate denies involvement; Putnam chief deputy calls media 'irresponsible'
Story updated at 12:08 PM on Friday, Sep. 25, 2009
<snipped>
Diane Prevatt said her daughter, Kristina Prevatt, wrote her a letter similar to the one sent to Spells.

Her daughter has also told her she was not involved with what happened, was not at the Cummings mobile home and did not pick Misty up the night Haleigh disappeared.

The mother said Naynay and Misty were at Diane Prevatt’s residence the Friday before Haleigh vanished. She said Ronald Cummings, Haleigh’s father, came by three times wanting to see Misty, who was asleep.

When he was not allowed inside, he returned with Misty’s clothes and threw them outside, Diane Prevatt said.

The latest barrage of allegations and stories has family members of the missing girl in disbelief and sadness.

Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh’s mother, said she was told by a deputy that the letter was meaningless. She said it was still worrying.

“That’s really bothering me,” she said. “I couldn’t sleep last night. I’ve been pretty much crying last night and this morning.”

Ryan said releasing the letter to the media was wrong.

“We’ve been responding to drama and rumor control,” he said. “I think it was irresponsible. They basically killed this child off on national television.”

“We are still investigating this as if this child is alive,” Ryan said.

In other twists, Misty Croslin’s brother was released from the Putnam County jail Thursday on $5,000 bail on an unrelated grand theft charge involving a gun. Also Thursday, his mother was arrested in Tennessee on three fraud and forgery charges related to the same theft case, Ryan said.

And Thursday afternoon the Sheriff’s Office said it is seeking information on a woman who left an envelope containing information about the case at the offices of the St. Augustine Record. She dropped it off about 3 p.m. then disappeared.

Hank Croslin Jr. released
Published: Friday, September 25, 2009 2:19 AM EDT
<snipped>
Hank Croslin Jr., Misty Croslin's brother, was released from the Putnam County Jail on Thursday afternoon - the same day their mother, Lisa Croslin, was arrested in Tennessee.

The arrests were made after a former Satsuma neighbor reported that a gun and several checks had been stolen from his residence.

A sheriff's office report says that one check was forged and cashed by Lisa Croslin on Sept. 8 in the amount of $400. The former neighbor believed the items were stolen after the two used his phone in August.

Lisa Croslin, 40, is being held in Tennessee on a bond of $10,504, Rick Ryan, chief of staff for the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, said.

Hank Croslin Jr.'s wife and three children greeted him at the main entrance of the jail at 12:30 p.m.

He refused to comment about Haleigh or his recent assertion that Misty was not home the night the 6-year-old vanished.

"I don't want to talk about it," Croslin said.

Second Letter Makes Claims About Haleigh Cummings Case
September 25, 2009 4:54 AM
<snipped>
The Putnam County sheriff's office is trying to authenticate a letter dropped off at the offices of newspaper in St. Augustine that claims to know what happened to Haleigh Cummings.
The letter was brought in to the St. Augustine Record on Wednesday afternoon by an unidentified woman wearing hospital scrubs.

The newspaper turned it over to police, who are now looking for that woman.

So far the newspaper hasn't reported what is in the letter, and Putnam County police have not commented.

Police want to speak to the step-grandmother of missing 6-year-old Haleigh Cummings. There's a warrant out for her arrest.

Police say Lisa Croslin is wanted for forgery. While police are looking for her, her son Hank is out of jail after posting bond. Hank Croslin has been charged with grand theft.

FOX 35 has also learned that Misty Cummings, Haliegh's step-mother, is no longer in Satsuma. She's apparently staying with a friend in Orlando.

UPDATED: Tip could be 'very helpful' in solving Haleigh Cummings case, officials say
Authorities are looking for woman who delivered a letter with information on Haleigh Cummings to the St. Augustine Record.
1:32 p.m. EDT, September 25, 2009
<snipped>
The woman who brought the letter appeared at the newspaper's office in St. Augustine and left an envelope for Associate Editor Richard Prior. It included typed information about the young girl. Detectives collected the letter from Prior and started following up on the information, according to the statement.

"Unfortunately the detectives need further clarification of the information, and are hoping that someone will recognize the woman that delivered it," Capt. Dick Schauland said in an e-mailed statement.

Prior said she was probably in the newspaper building 10 seconds and probably didn't realize she was caught on camera dropping off the envelope. When he opened it and read the letter, Prior said he thought "It's pretty amazing"

He contacted his boss, made a copy of the letter and also contacted the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Prior said he also shared the letter with lawyers for Ronald Cummings, Haleigh's father. Together, they went to deliver the letter to the Putnam County officials.

Prior said the information in the letter could be "potentially vital" to the investigation, but that's unclear after seven months and thousands of tips related to the case.

"This may be as valueless as all those other tips," Prior said. "But they want to check it out. Nobody knows until the cops check it out."

But Prior added, "If it's true, it will be pretty volatile."

"At some point the contents of the letter will come out," he said. "We're not interested at all in interfering with their investigation...They didn't ask us not to [publish the contents] but they said it would help if we held off until they talk to this woman."

That request, he said, was important in the paper's decision.

"If they had not asked, we probably already would have published it," he said.

The Sheriff's Office is not releasing the letter's contents either, but if the information is true, Schauland said, "It could be very helpful in solving the Haleigh Cummings case."

According to the sheriff's office, the woman appeared at the newspaper's office in St. Augustine and dropped off an envelope addressed to the Associate Editor, Richard Prior. The typed letter contained information about Haleigh, who was 5 years old when she vanished from a Satsuma home in February.

The letter was given to detectives, who are investigating the information. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is not releasing the contents of the letter but said if the information is true, it could be very helpful in solving the case.

The woman took the letter to the St. Augustine Record Wednesday afternoon. Addressed to the newspaper's associate editor, the typed letter had information about the child, who disappeared from her father's Satsuma home in February.

The newspaper provided the letter to officers who have been following up the information. "Unfortunately the detectives need further clarification of the information and are hoping that someone will recognize the woman that delivered it," according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

The newspaper describes the woman as a "blonde woman, wearing blue scrubs," who dropped the envelope off at 3 p.m., "then quickly left the building."

The Sheriff's Office would not release the letter's contents. But, it reported, "if the information is true, it could be very helpful in solving the Haleigh Cummings case."

UPDATED: Jailhouse letter about Haleigh case revealed
September 25, 2009
Last Update: 11:08 am
<snipped>
One of those letters that was screened was written by Kristina Prevatt, a friend of Misty Croslin-Cummings, who goes by the nickname, Nay Nay.

The jail director told Action News the corrections department intercepted the letter because it contained the word Haleigh.

Dodd says her sister is telling the truth. "I think she was at her baby daddy's house," she said. "I don't think she had anything to do with it. I didn't think Misty did either because Misty was my friend, I knew her personally, really well since she was 14 and I didn't think something like this would happen," said Dodd.

Thursday afternoon Hank Croslin Junior, Misty's brother, was released from jail. He was serving time for a Grand Theft charge.

PCSO Criticizes Release of Jail Letter in Haleigh Case, WSKY Responds
Posted: Friday, 25 September 2009 7:59AM
<snipped>
The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is changing its tune regarding an alleged jail house letter from a party pal of a missing Satsuma girl's stepmother from "we are not reacting to the letter" before it appeared on radio, internet and national television to "very disappointed, and quite frankly, appalled" after it was made public.

The new reaction from PCSO comes after 97.3 The Sky first sent the agency the alleged jail house letter for comments Tuesday night. 97.3 The Sky then sat on the letter for 14 hours awaiting their first response which, at the time was, "we are not reacting to the letter."

WJXT TV Channel 4 asked Putnam County Chief Deputy Rick Ryan about a jail house letter on Thursday and the report on CNN's "Nancy Grace." :

“We know about the letter," Ryan said. "There was some issue about draining of the pond. The pond was drained before the letter. Quite frankly, we feel like it's irresponsible journalism to put this on the air that this letter is the gospel.

"I'm very disappointed, and quite frankly, appalled."

When asked if the affidavit mentioned in the letter is true, Ryan said, "Again, we don't care anything about this letter, and we're not going to waste our time on it. Even if it was our theory, we're just not going to talk about it."

Misty's Mother Arrested, Charged with Forgery. Brother Bonds Out.
Posted: Thursday, 24 September 2009 5:30PM
<snipped>
Lisa Croslin, the step grandmother of missing 6-year-old Haleigh Cummings of Satsuma, has been arrested in Tennessee after a warrant for felony forgery was issued by Putnam County with a nation-wide pickup.

A sheriff's office report says that one check was forged and cashed by Lisa Croslin on Sept. 8 in the amount of $400. The former neighbor believed the checks and a gun were stolen after the Lisa Croslin and her son, Hank Thomas "Tommy" Croslin Jr., used his phone in August.

Authorities with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office tell 97.3 The Sky Lisa Croslin's bond is $10,504.00.

In fact, Lisa Croslin reportedly backed up a claim made by her son who just bonded out of the Putnam County on an unrelated theft of a gun charge. Her son--and Misty's brother-- Hank Thomas Croslin Jr. stated he went to Rona and Misty's trailer at about 10 p.m. at Ronald's request by phone to check on Misty and the kids the night Haleigh was taken. Hank "Tommy" Croslin said he banged on the door and the home had no lights on and was quiet. He told Putnam County deputies no one was home.

Lisa Croslin was the woman who returned the gun Tommy Croslin allegedly took from a former neighbor hours after the man noticed it missing from his home when the two went there to use his phone.

Shortly after that, Lisa and her husband Hank Croslin Sr. left the Satsuma area rather quickly headed to be in Tennessee at Lisa's mother's home.

Stay tuned to News Talk 97.3 The Sky for updates on this story.

UPDATED: Haleigh Case: Another Unrelated Arrest, Mysterious Letter Arrives
Letter Addressed To Newspaper Editor 'Will Probably Solve' Case
POSTED: Friday, September 25, 2009
UPDATED: 10:17 pm EDT September 25, 2009
<snipped>
The series of events surrounding the family of Haleigh Cummings and her disappearance shows no signs of letting up.

The latest developments:
•Haleigh's step-grandmother, Lisa Croslin, was arrested Thursday in Tennessee on a Putnam County warrant on charges including forgery.

•Haleigh's step-uncle, Hank Croslin Jr., was released from the Putnam County jail Thursday after an arrest on grand theft.

•Deputies in both Putnam and St. Johns counties are trying to identify a woman who dropped off a letter containing a tip about Haleigh's disappearance at the St. Augustine Record on Wednesday.

Investigators have not disclosed the contents of the letter that was left with the newspaper's receptionist about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Prior said the information doesn't point the finger at any individual, but definitely says what happened to Haleigh.

"It will probably solve what happened to Haleigh Cummings," Prior told Channel 4's Dan Leveton about the tip.

Late Friday, Schauland said the woman had learned that authorities wanted to talk to her and she voluntarily came to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The woman, whose name was not released, said she was just a messenger delivering the letter for someone else, leaving investigators with questions.
