One investigator, among a group of investigators who were in the lab interviewing employees and students shortly after Le disappeared, witnessed Clark trying to hide lab cleaning equipment that they discovered contained blood spatters. Clark was observed cleaning up areas that Le was in before she was reported missing, the law enforcement official said.

Rumor control: No 2nd arrest pending

In the hours after the murder, the days of Annie Le's disappearance, did Raymond Clark have an accomplice?

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis says that is a false rumor.

"There's no second arrest pending," Lewis said.

They are not actively pursuing a warrant to arrest anyone else in the murder of Yale graduate student Annie Le at this time.

In a sit-down interview with News Channel 8, the chief said he is limited on what he can comment on as the arrest warrant affidavit was sealed by the courts, so he could not answer directly if he believes Clark acted alone.

"I can't talk about that now cause that's in the sealed document," Lewis said.

Speculation has been widespread because Clark's fiance, sister and brother-in-law all work at Yale, all at 10 Amistad St., the scene of the crime.

Clark's actions odd after Le disappears

Clark actually attracted police attention by his odd behavior. It appears, he may have been trying to cover his tracks. But with so much evidence, it was a futile effort.

According to the Hartford Courant , investigators took note of Clark early on while Le was only listed as missing because of his bizarre and suspicious behavior in the basement lab.

He was observed cleaning up areas of the lab that Le had been in, then trying to hide the cleaning equipment later found to have blood stains. Computer records of his Yale swipe card show he moved between several rooms and into rooms he shouldn't have been in and left the building several times.

Ray Clark, Alleged Killer of Annie Le, Could Spend Life Behind Bars If Convicted
Legal Experts Say It's Unlikely Clark Will Get the Death Penalty If Convicted

A few miles from where Ray Clark sits in prison, 10 men await execution on Connecticut's death row.

And one day if he's found guilty, he could be transferred to a cellblock at the Northern Correctional Institution, the home of Connecticut's death row.

As is common with high-profile inmates, Clark likely spent his first night behind bars in a separate area of the prison, commonly called a pretrial holding cell,f or his own safety, according to Ed Bales at the Federal Prison Consultants LLC.

Police: Clark 'Always A Person Of Interest'
Police Said They Started Watching Clark Days After Annie Le Went Missing
September 18, 2009
<snipped>
Police Chief James Lewis said that Clark was always a person of interest. Last weekend, when Yale police turned the investigation over to Lewis and his team, he assigned his narcotics team to track Clark, 24 hours a day.

According to detectives' documentation, Clark spent time with his family in Cromwell on Sunday. He went down to New Haven to play softball and detectives watch him from the stands. Then, they followed him to Higganum to visit relatives. They said that later, Clark blended in like any fair goer at the annual Hebron Harvest Fair. On Monday, detectives decided to be more overt, that's when Clark seemed to realize that he was being followed. They said he began to shut off his lights in his apartment and pull down his shades.

New Haven police Chief James Lewis told the AP in a phone interview Friday the only person who knows the reason for the murder of Annie Le is the man charged with the crime, Raymond Clark III.

"The only person that really truly knows the motive in this crime is the suspect," Chief James Lewis told WFSB-TV. "What made him do what he did, we may not know until trial. We may never know."

Source: DNA match led to lab tech's arrest in Yale murder
updated 9:48 p.m. EDT, Fri September 18, 2009
<snipped>
DNA match linking Raymond J. Clark III to Yale student Annie Le led to his arrest on murder charges, a source with knowledge of the investigation said.

The night she was killed, a fire alarm in the building was pulled, a source with knowledge of the investigation said.

When investigators reviewed security tapes from that night, the source said, they began to focus on Clark, who was seen looking distraught and holding his head in his hands.

Clark had nothing in his employment history at the university that "gave an indication that his involvement in such a crime might be possible," Levin said in a statement issued Thursday.

A faculty member described Clark's job in the Animal Resources Center as maintaining colonies for animals used in research. The lab is in the basement of the building where Le's body was found.

Raymond Clark played softball as cops closed in on accused Annie Le killer

On the day investigators found Yale grad student Annie Le's body stuffed behind a basement wall, her accused killer was playing softball.

"We had detectives in the crowd," Lt. John Velleca, head of the New Haven police department's narcotics unit, told the New Haven Independent. "He's actually pretty good."

Later that day, Clark spent time with some relatives before heading to a country fair in Hebron, about 50 miles northeast of New Haven.

It was the last day Clark would experience true freedom.

From Monday until his arrest early Thursday, the narc unit tailing Clark came out of the shadows in a bid to get him to speak, the New Haven Independent reported.

The cops wore their badges openly and often parked their vehicles in front of his Middletown, Conn., home.

Electronic records show that Clark moved quickly among several rooms, some he had no business being in, on the day Le went missing, sources say.

Friends, Amistad lab workers react to arrest

“I think (it was) very important to get this person out. My wife also works here,” said one researcher who did not give his name. “She’s very scared to go in the basement.”

Rong Ju, a cardiovascular researcher in the Amistad Street lab, said he had just recently started working with mice in the building’s basement when Le disappeared Sept. 8. Since then, access to the building has been limited, and he’s yet to return to the basement.

“It just makes me feel sad, if I have to go downstairs to work,” he said. “I used to think the building was really safe. I still think that.”

The building was heavily guarded Thursday, with four officers stationed at the front door. Still, numerous researchers could be seen coming and going.

Some of Clark’s fellow members of the Branford High Class of 2004 shared their shocked reactions with each other on Facebook.

“Can’t believe this whole Ray Clark thing ... I don’t even have words. I’m just in shock,” wrote one 2004 graduate on her Facebook page.

“I can’t believe this!!!” wrote another. “I’m still shocked. This is crazy!!! My mind is telling me he did it, but my heart is denying it!!!”

BEACH: Cross Campus an oasis during grief
Friday, September 18, 2009
<snipped>
Yale’s Cross Campus, a broad plaza bordered by Elm, College, Wall and High streets, has become an oasis where, in times of shattering events, students, staff and some of the general public gather to console one another.

The killing of Le was one of those times.

As we drew closer to Cross Campus, I became aware of the chorus of mid-September cicadas, then the bells of Harkness Tower and the sight of hundreds of candles, one held by each vigil attendee, each sad face illuminated.

The crowd kept growing, reaching 1,000 or more, filling that expanse. But it was very, very quiet.

It hit me that I had been there before, seen this before. On a cold night in December 1998, a crowd of students formed a large, silent circle on this same turf to mourn another slain Yale student, Suzanne Jovin.

Yes, this plaza is a place for healing and reassurance. I thought back to being there in the wake of another traumatic event: the day former President Bill Clinton came to Yale’s tercentennial, a few weeks after Sept. 11, 2001, and told us, “It’s gonna be all right.”

Unlike other cases, cops had plenty to work with
Friday, September 18, 2009
<snipped>
At times, even days after a homicide, detectives are relegated to knocking on doors and “grasping at straws,” police Chief James Lewis said Thursday.

That wasn’t the case in the investigation of Annie Le, a Yale graduate student who mysteriously disappeared after entering a Yale laboratory building Sept. 8. Her body was found five days later stuffed in a basement wall.

Indeed, there is no dearth of evidence in Le’s killing: Large amounts of forensic material were recovered at the crime scene, stored data from magnetic swipe keys were used to retrace people’s movements throughout the building, hundreds of hours of security video from exits were reviewed and about 150 people were interviewed.

While being interviewed, authorities noticed Clark had what could be interpreted as wounds from a struggle on his body. When officers moved to take photos of the injuries, Clark invoked his right to an attorney.

Le’s body flown back to Calif. for funeral
Saturday, September 19, 2009

Annie Maria Le has gone home.

The casket of the 24-year-old Yale University graduate student was accompanied by her extended family Friday morning on her last trip back to the small, rural town of Placerville, Calif., where she grew up, sources said Friday.

The body of the petite doctoral candidate in pharmacology was found hidden Sunday in a covered wall recess in the research building where she studied, five days after she was reported missing. Raymond Clark, 24, who worked at the same facility as an animal technician, has been charged in her slaying.

Flowers and candles are placed at a makeshift memorial at a park across the street from 10 Amistad St., where Yale graduate student Annie Le was killed last week.

The body of slain Yale grad student Annie Le is home in California.

Members of her extended family flew Le home on Friday, 10 days after she first went missing.

The 24-year-old would have been on her honeymoon this weekend.

Instead, a casket holding the petite pharmacology student arrived in her hometown of Placerville, Calif. - about an hour east of Sacramento - late Friday night, sources told the New Haven Register.

Specific funeral plans for Le are not yet known, but an invitation-only service is expected in Placerville in about a week, the Register reported.

New Haven Police Chief James Lewis says that is a false rumor.

"He wasn't the only one that we were keeping track of during different times in this investigation," Lewis said.

We don't know if the other potential suspects were his fiancee or members of his family, but as of right now, Clark remains the only suspect. Though the Chief isn't closing the door. He said if anyone is found to have tampered with evidence or have abetted the crime in any fashion, they too will face charges.

Car seized where Yale suspect arrested

Police investigating the murder of a Yale graduate student are still collecting evidence, including a car they towed from the motel where the suspected killer was arrested.

Police wouldn't confirm who owns the Ford Taurus they towed Friday night from the Super 8 motel in Cromwell, Conn. The father of Raymond Clark III, the Yale lab technician charged with the murder of Annie Le, checked into the motel before his son was arrested Thursday.

A state trooper who took part in the seizure confirmed that it was related to Clark's arrest. It's not clear if the suspect's father is still staying at the Super 8, and police did not enter the motel.

Experts: Yale defense has tough job

Hartford attorney Michael Georgetti says defense attorneys will have to show how the crime scene changed from the time 24-year-old Annie Le (LAY) vanished and when her body was found five days later. Police didn't immediately shut down the lab where the victim was eventually found.

New Haven attorney William Dow III says defense attorneys can only attack the investigative process and its conclusions to counteract forensic evidence that police say links Raymond Clark to Le's death.

Experts: Defense In Yale Killing Has Tough Job
Annie Le Found Dead On What Would Have Been Her Wedding Day

That likely leaves Clark's attorneys with going after how that evidence was gathered -- rather than what it showed -- and have prosecutors defend their decision not to seal the lab building until Le's body was found.

"DNA can be transferred in many, many ways, and when people work together, DNA can be transferred in ways that are very legitimate," said Michael Georgetti, a Hartford defense attorney.

But the attorneys also said the prosecutor's case appears very strong.

If they have Clark's DNA in the crawl space where the body was found, Le's DNA on his clothing, scratches that an expert can say were defensive wounds, and more, it will be much harder to base a defense on problems with collecting that evidence.

"If a jury is looking for something to grab on to, then this could be something for them to grab on to," said Hugh Keefe, another top Connecticut defense attorney. "But stepping back, and going just on what I have read in the newspapers, this is a tough case from a defense standpoint."

New Haven pastor Dennis Smith said Saturday the family of Annie Le, originally of Placerville, Calif., is very private and is "a little uncomfortable" with the extensive media coverage of Le's death.

Smith says the family appreciates the expressions of sympathy and a candlelight vigil held on Yale's campus.

Smith says Le's family is grateful there was an arrest, but wonders why Le was killed.
