Attorneys for Raymond Clark III, the Middletown lab technician accused of killing Yale University graduate student Annie Le, are asking the court to keep his arrest warrant affidavit sealed from public view.

Clark’s public defenders filed a motion on Thursday in New Haven Superior Court to extend an earlier order to keep the affidavit sealed.

The affidavit was originally sealed for 14 days.

Calls were left seeking comment with Clark’s attorneys and state prosecutors.

Potential New Evidence In Yale Murder Case
September 25, 2009
<snipped>
The State Police Central District Crime Squad was called to 10 Amistad St. after an employee discovered clothing in the basement area, apparently in some kind of drain pipe. The evidence was removed for testing.

On Wednesday, the Western District Crime Squad was called to the building to flush out and search other drain pipes in the basement area. No additional evidence was found.

Officer Joe Avery, a New Haven police spokesman, said police recovered "possible evidence or something related to the case," but he declined to elaborate.

"We've never really been totally out of there," Avery said. "We've been back and forth, and we're still in and out of there. This is a big case, and we're going to cross every 't' and dot every 'i.'"

LE MEMORIAL
Slain Yale Student Memorialized As 'Passionate Young Scientist'
September 24, 2009
<snipped>
"Instead of celebrating a wedding, we are memorializing a life," said Lauren Widawsky, the younger sister of Jonathan Widawsky, the fiancé of Annie Le.

In an hourlong service attended by about 300 people at Temple Beth El, clergy, friends and relatives lamented the loss of Le, 24. She and Widawsky were to be married Sept. 13 by the synagogue's cantor at a nearby hall on Long Island.

On Wednesday night, a large portrait of Le smiled out at the congregation, who heard stories about her academic success, sense of humor, ambition, love for shoe shopping and perhaps most important, her love for her fiancé.

"What girl would ever let Jonathan cut her hair?" Lauren Widawsky asked. Le did.

Later, Lauren fought back tears as she spoke directly to Le in the form of a letter. "We all miss you, we love you and you will be in our hearts forever."

When Clark was arrested Sept. 17, the warrant was sealed for 14 days, but it may not be unsealed until Oct. 6 when the motion is addressed in court.

The motion is just one paragraph long and simply asks that the case “remain under seal.”

State’s Attorney Michael Dearington, who is prosecuting Clark, could not be reached Thursday for a reaction to the defense motion.

Family to Hold Funeral Service for Murdered Yale Student Saturday

The funeral mass for murdered Yale Univeristy graduate student Annie Le will be held Saturday afternoon at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in El Dorado Hills, Calif.

Le, who was from rural Placerville, Calif., was found dead in her Yale lab building on what would have been her wedding day.

The family planned an invitation-only service at the church, following by a burial at a nearby cemetery in Rescue, a family spokesman told The Daily News.

At the service, Le was remembered as a bright, vivacious, ambitious dynamo whose death cheated those who loved her, as well as those who never had a chance to meet her.

Mourners in Calif. remember slain Yale student

Annie Le, who was 24, is to be eulogized and buried near where she grew up in California's Sierra Nevada foothills. In a statement issued Friday by the university, her family recalled Le's beaming smile and fun-loving spirit.

"She was a kindhearted human being who was devoted to her family and friends, always sacrificing her time to help others," the family said. "Her laughter was infectious and her goodness was ingenuous."

Saturday's funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in El Dorado Hills, about 30 miles east of Sacramento, follows a memorial service earlier in the week at the Long Island synagogue of her fiance, Jonathan Widawsky.

As mourners filed in Saturday, the church's pastor, Monsignor James Kidder called the service "a chance for the family itself to come to reconciliation with what humanly is irreconcilable — not only the fact that Annie died but the way she died."

Kidder called Le "a rare person ... a person who is naturally good." Le was busy but always had time for others, he said. "She was lots of fun and she had a wicked sense of humor."

Kidder had been Le's pastor until she graduated from Union Mine High School near Placerville and left for college. He said her family was seeking healing from Saturday's funeral and burial.

This week we saw Jonathan Widowsky wearing his ring -- the ring that he and Annie Le, Yale doctoral student, should have been exchanging together. We all know the words, "With this ring, I thee wed."

Sadness instead of joy

Instead of exchanging wedding rings and vows at a celebration where family and friends share tears of joy, this week the family and friends of Jonathan Widawshy, Annie Le's finance, joined in mourrning -- sharing tears of sadness. Annie Le's fiance mourns at LI memorial‎ (Newsday photos and videos.)

Scholarship fund and Yale service
To keep her memory alive, Yale has set up a scholarship fund Yale sets up Annie Le scholarship fund‎ and the Yale Daily News noted: "Yale will hold a memorial service on Oct. 12 for Annie Le GRD ’13, whose body was found Sept. 13 in a University research lab where she worked. The service will take place in Battell Chapel at 5 p.m, according to the Office of Public Affairs. " University plans memorial service for Le GRD ’13.

As mourners filed in Saturday, the church's pastor, Monsignor James Kidder called the service "a chance for the family itself to come to reconciliation with what humanly is irreconcilable - not only the fact that Annie died but the way she died."

Kidder called Le "a rare person ... a person who is naturally good." Le was busy but always had time for others, he said. "She was lots of fun and she had a wicked sense of humor."

The statement released by the university also contained details of Le's family life.

Le (pronounced "lay") was born to Vietnamese parents Hoang and Vivian Van Le in San Jose, according to the university. He remarried after a divorce, but the university did not say where he or Le's mother live.

She and her brother Chris Le, a student at the University of California, Davis, were raised by an aunt and uncle near Placerville, in a home deep in the woods and miles from the nearest town.

They are described by the family as her "guardian parents." The guardians, Robert Linh Nguyen and Ngoc-Tuyet Bui, had three children of their own.

A family spokesmen could not say when Le's parents came to the U.S. from Vietnam or why she was raised by her aunt and uncle.

Colleagues and family members said she had an outsized personality and a determined will that belied her 4-foot-11, 90 pound frame.

"Although Annie was small in size, she had a large heart and a personality that filled the room," her laboratory colleagues wrote in the university statement. "No challenge ever seemed too large for her to overcome."

Yale officials are planning an Oct. 12 memorial service on campus and said they are establishing a scholarship in her memory.

Her drive led her to spend hours applying for college scholarships, eventually being awarded nearly $160,000 worth. She attended the University of Rochester in New York, majoring in bioscience, and met Widawsky, now a graduate student in physics at Columbia University.

Le began attending Yale as a graduate pharmacology student in 2007 and was on track to earn her doctorate in 2013. She was working on research with enzymes that Yale said could help with treating cancer, diabetes and muscular dystrophy.

Conn College And Yale To Share Grants To Help Prevent Violence Against Women
September 26, 2009
<snipped>
Connecticut College and Yale University will share $643,000 in federal funds to create programs to prevent violence against women on campus.

The funds come from the Office on Violence Against Women and the National Institute of Justice, both units of the Justice Department.

The body of Yale graduate student Annie Le was found in a university building earlier this month. Police have charged a co-worker in the slaying, which the New Haven police chief characterized as workplace violence.

Connecticut College will use $299,277 to weave expanded sexual-assault awareness and prevention programs into the campus culture, said spokeswoman Amy Martin. She said services for victims will also be enhanced and the focus will be on preventing domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.

Martin said the initiative, Operation Think SAFE, is part of an overall expansion of wellness programs at the New London campus.

According to Dodd's news release, Yale will use $343,565 for "criminal justice research into preventing violence against women." A Yale spokeswoman did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

Slain Yale grad Annie Le laid to rest

Shared grief has made them like family, but not the way they had ever wanted, the mother of a slain Yale grad student told her devastated fiancé yesterday at the young woman's funeral.

"John, even now, Annie is gone, but I still have you. And I love you so much, like my son," Vivian Van Le told John Widawsky, who was set to marry Annie Le the day her body was discovered murdered at the lab where she did her doctoral work.

Le's mother then read a poem in her native Vietnamese, which her son Christopher, a student at the University of California, Davis, fought back tears to translate.

"Farewell, my child. You are here lying in the cold coffin, leaving behind the wailing of loved ones. I sing you lullabies by your side, so sweet, like I did when you were a baby, wishing you a peaceful sleep. They are now sung through my crying sobs, sung to wish you an eternal blessed sleep," the poem read.

"Although our beloved Annie is no longer with us, she continues to live and shine deep within our hearts as we remember her," said her uncle and parental guardian Robert Nguyen.

Funeral for Annie Le in El Dorado Hills, CA. Annie Le was a Yale graduate student from northern California. Annie went missing in early September from the lab in which she worked. Her body was found in the lab five days later; the day on which she was supposed to be married.
